The easy way to make this look good is to create a new block type, i.e. a cloud block, then simply have all the "floating islands" sitting on/in clouds.
Eh, that's probably just end up looking like it was a never-ending snow biome with green hills all over it. Kinda weird.

I think it'd need fog, personally. Have the lower levels gradually more faded out so it's not just a stark shift from ground to absolutely nothing. Some kind of vertical-plane-specific clipping range.

Not to be a contrarian, but I've kinda made my own sky dimension in FortressCraft already. I had to build it all myself, of course. Once I got the jetpack though, the sky was literally the limit.

I see what you mean but i'm not sure about the fog either, not being able to see much would get old quickly.

Although i didn't mean the cloud would have to be continuous, otherwise that would look exactly like a snow field, I just meant literally around the base of the island... like the island was sitting on a free floating cloud.

Hm. That's not a bad idea. I think the Aether mod has the right idea of kinda lightening up all the colors involved to give it a less dense appearance, more airy in general (and a couple of the screenshots in the Aether thread are what had me thinking about fog, but he probably just has his clipping distance pulled in pretty short). Otherwise you still end up with that pretty sharp contrast between ground and then sky everywhere else. Different texture packs would likely work better/worse with the general theme, of course.

It seems that Notch literally cannot win here.

Makes the mod official?
OH WOW JUST USING MODS NOW NOTCH? YOU LAZY BASTARD!

Doesn't use the mod, and instead makes his own version?
WHY ARE YOU NOT USING THE MOD THE MOD IS BETTER STOP RIPPING OFF THEIR IDEAS NOTCH!

Decides to just not incorporate sky worlds?
WHY ARE YOU NOT PUTTING THESE IN NOTCH WHY ARE YOU SUCH A LAZY GIT THESE WOULD BE GREAT
How about "Doesn't use the mod and instead makes his own version better than the mod?

I think that'd go over pretty well.
See my second point. They'd just accuse him of ripping the mod off. Then they'd go on to say that he didn't do enough, and affirm that he's abandoned Minecraft.

God, there are partisan, entitled brats... then there's places like /v/

All I can say is.

Great way to directly copy Terraria.

Edit: I love how the only post mentioning Terraria is the one above mine, and everyone else didn't even think of the game Terraria.
Ever considered that people, like me, have never heard of Terraria? Or may not play it, not mind it, or not care?

Does it *matter* who began working on flying islands first? Flying islands are cool, end of story.

I thought it was just going to say he was going to add bigger floating islands, goodness knows the ones my seed created are tiny.

Seems he's just trying to create a heaven to counter hell.

The man could walk across water, and people would complain about how he's taking money away from ferrymen.
Exactly. People always seem to forget that he doesn't actually owe us anything. We already bought the game. He could just stop development, or charge us for extra stuff. But no, we get everything FOR FREE. And frankly, he's the genius that made the game in the first place. Let him do whatever he wants to it, I'm sure it will be awesome. Just be happy it exists in the first place.

No thanks, I think I've fallen to my death more than enough.

This is one dimension I won't be exploring to much.

My guess is that players would once again have to travel to the sky dimension through portals, as with the Nether, but I have a much better idea for getting back down. Water slides. That is all.
Couldn't help but think of this after that idea.

So this is different than that one floating island I found that I failed to get a screenshot of, right? Though to be fair, this was only about 8 cubes off the ground, but it was cool because there was nothing "holding it up". Anyone else experience this phenomenon naturally? As in, not by carving away at the base of a mountain or something.

Notch is so shameless in his taking ideas from mods.
Its his bloody game...
You don't even need to say that. The original comment was inherently flawed.

If he didn't "take ideas" there would literally be nothing left to do. It's similar to movies that "Steal ideas". We are what? 10 thousand years deep into written human history? It's probably been done.

- - -

The Aether people will just slightly modify their mod to run off the official code and end up with a smaller mod download and less things to work around. Frankly it'll probably be all wins for them.
It also helps that, y'know, people have been clamouring for floating islands, carving out floating islands, building by hand more goddamn floating islands,... It's not like he got the idea specifically from the Kodaichi people.

Or the Kodaichi people asked him to see their work.

'Sides, if Notch builds it directly into the game rather than as a mod, it'll likely be less glitchy and mesh better with the game itself.

The odd ropes of lava and water look a little strange, but otherwise, I like it. It'd be really fun making a huge skyborn castle complex, bridging together islands and stuff.

They wouldn't say he didn't do enough if, as I mentioned in my alteration to your second point, his version is better than the mod. Sure, they'd still point out he got his idea from the mod, but there wouldn't be the same degree of outcry as when he's using an idea from a mod and making his own version of it that looks worse, as appears to be the case here.

I think notch has been playing terraria
You think he's been playing a game that includes 3 to 6 flying treasure islands over a landmass that's 80% grounded and underground because he's trying to make an all-floating landmass zone?

That seems like a pretty big leap to make. And a silly one. Newsflash: Terraria is not the first game to implement floating islands with treasure chests on them.

I mean, hell, you might as well look at this article and say, "I think Notch has been playing Mario 64." It's equally reasonable as a comparison for "games that have arbitrary floating islands."

I'm not normally one to go about defending Minecraft as a pinnacle of innovation (it isn't), but good lord, you guys are really stretching here.
