I'm not Catholic, but the architecture, the history, the artistry in the gargoyles and stain glass...several films ased on a play and book...

I hope they can save it for those sakes alone if nothing else.

The Spire collapsed.
Just saw that. 600, 1300 years of history, and during Holy Week. There were probably people in the near constant Masses in that church.

No matter how damaged it ends up, they'll repair it for sure (even if it means rebuilding it from the ground up).

EDIT: Fun fact. The original novel of Hunchback of Notre-Dame was written with the intention of bringing up to the reader the importance of preserving historical monuments like the Notre Dame Cathedral.

But lots of priceless art and historical artifacts may have burned and destroyed.

It's like the Library of Alexandria going up in smoke.

Notre Dame is one of the biggest historical and architectural treasures in Europe. The level of detail that went into the building's construction was positively insane.

^That. Notre Dame will be rebuilt (At the very least because tourism, but hopefully the Catholic Church will pitch in too), but the artifacts and artworks are gone forever.

It wouldn't be the first, sadly. The old Palace of Westminster was another victim of fire. So sad to see so much history literally go up in smoke, I hope it wasn't deliberate.

That is painful to see. It's one of the most iconic pieces of historic architecture. Damage already looks extensive.

Mostly paintings and statues. Everything else is at the museum.

That is pretty depressing. Especially since Notre Dame is a famous and historical landmark.

(I sure hope the Hunchback managed to make it out...)

It's been a dry few week lately. But... man, that's depressing. Such a beautiful building. History going up in flames.

This saddens me on so many levels. I hope that the damages to human life and welfare are as minimal as possible.

As for the cathedral itself: It is tragic. And we can rebuild. And we should rebuild.

THis 1100 year old church has been as much an icon for Frans as say the Twin Towers were for the US. As fun as a 40k reference is, Red One's go Faster, we probably should leave it at that for now.

So is the main theory just an accident caused by the renovations

You know what sucks? Some people are blaming politics for this whole mess. God, I hate people sometimes...

This is no laughing matter here dude.
I'm just saying if we're gonna lose Notre Dame, the world deserves a duel worthy of losing it. Having Notre Dame just burn down from a electrical fire during a renovation is just...wrong. Its lame. Its either epic showdown or no fire.

I thought that was a Dan Brown reference.
