Bit of good news, at least. The paintings, crown of thorns, holy sacraments, all good. Though one or two news sources are now saying "some" of the paintings were saved, so I suppose we'll see.

Hopefully this was not intentional. When this Jew visited earlier with family, I kept myself occupied by lighting a candle. Cost me $2 Euros. I used a stick, the smoldering red end of which broke off and rolled under the wooden table on which the candles rested. I dropped to my belly and put the ember out with my fingers *ouch*. When I got up, of course, family was laughing their butts off. The thing has stood for 850 years and nearly collapsed when this klutz visited. Very possibly, someone wasn't as willing to burn their fingers as I.

No matter how damaged it ends up, they'll repair it for sure (even if it means rebuilding it from the ground up).
But lots of priceless art and historical artifacts may have burned and destroyed.
The one positive thought here is that there's less than there could have been, as the same renovation works that are the suspected cause of the fire also meant a lot of stuff got moved out of the cathedral

So there was a epic fight right? Like angels and demons and slayers and Grey Knights right?
THis 1100 year old church has been as much an icon for Frans as say the Twin Towers were for the US. As fun as a 40k reference is, Red One's go Faster, we probably should leave it at that for now.

So is the main theory just an accident caused by the renovations

I thought that was a Dan Brown reference.
I hear Grey Knights, I see OP A Space Marines that have everyone a psyker and Terminators as a Troop choice how did you survive my tank shot?

In more relevant news the stone structure is expected to stand, and as was posted earlier, the art and sacred icons, as well as the people inside made it out safely. So far only one firefighter was injured, but no deaths mentioned

I noticed there was scaffolding up - it's potentially connected to building work as that often involves heating stuff up and accidents often seem to happen.

It's deeply tragic - a lot history going up in smoke. If they restore it - if they even can after a fire that bad - it'll take years and years.

Reminds me of the fire that destroyed the Museu Nacional here in Brazil some 6 months ago. The news reported that this big rock from space was one of the few items that survived the fire, and I was like... oh, no shit. I'm guessing the cathedral doesn't have any rocks from space though.

That absolutely sucks.
Always sad to see not only "history" going out in fire, but also the decades or centuries of efforts of those working on preserving it.

Wouldn't say it's that bad.
Hell, even in more recent times, the fire in National Museum of Brazil could be potentially more disastrous.

Ironically, the renovations that might've caused the fire(if that theory is confirmed), might also have been the saving grace, if most of the art being normally present there was evicted for the time being.

No, but seriously this is pretty tragic. Has there been any word on any injuries? Interesting to know how this happened.

So unconfirmed, unreliable update from a frenchman:

Though it is apparently in line with what the authorities are generally saying.

Would be good news, though i'd be careful about it, given fire brigades reportedly focused on rescuing art, rather than putting out the fire itself(understandable, since water can be almost as bad for old artifacts found in a church like this). And then there's also aerial view of the place when the Hellfire was still going on.

If there was any foul play the police would have find something already.

Such a tragedy.
I was there in November and, for what it's worth, I don't recall that much "art" inside the cathedral itself.
Thankfully they're rebuilding the parts that were lost (obviously) and hopefully they'll get to the root of the fire.

Yeah, this is about as bad as Westboro blaming cyclones in Austrlaia for the people voting for same sex marriage or Trump blaming job destruction and crime on immigrants or the Pope blaming sex abuse in the Catholic Church on the sexual revolution.

Even if some people in the Catholic Church did the wrong thing, not all of them have. The Notre Dame literally did nothing. It's a building.

Even if it was a total accident with nothing to do with politics, it'd be no surprise if someone didn't try scoring political points by blaming someone or other for this.

At least it seem the most iconic parts of the building (To me at any rate) the west side towers, are still standing.
Thus far. The Iconic tower that fell was relatively recent, mid 1800's I think. But this was the first Gothic Cathedral made, and those buildings had good strong stone for most of it. The roof was wood, so that went up. I wonder how the glass stood up against the heat? 400 foot flames has to produce something.

The conspiracy machine was running rampant from the usual culture warriors, so easy bet.

They're trying to tie it into a handful of robberies/vandalisms and a single arson committed by thieves/bored teens/satanists/bored-teens-playing-at-satanists going after largely abandoned churches.

'Course, instead of thieves/bored teens/satanists/bored-teens-playing-at-satanists, they're trying to pin it on you-know-who, despite synagogues and mosques being subject to similar attacks.

What? The literal, actual crown of thorns from Jesus's crucifixion?
