Sorry to get all political but just a thought.
I never understood this notion that right wingers use that Obama is a "socialist". Not only is Obama WAY WAY WAAAAY far from being one, those who even claim to be socialists half the time aren't.
Further more in many places in the world, including Western Europe, being a socialist is not considered a bad thing.
And no, I'm not a socialist... but I at least know what is it.
Well for starters (for anyone who is interested) I do not think Pokemon is socialist to begin with. I think people made a few jokes about it and then people started to take it too seriously. Speaking soley from my experience playing Pokemon Platinum before it broke the situation seemed fairly differant.
Generally speaking from the mild attempts the game made to have a plotline, it explains both that not everyone has Pokemon, but also that they are supposed to be very dangerous, elusive, and not very well understood despite everything.
The thing is though that the game is streamlined for casual play, so towns generally speaking are abbreiviated and to the point, buildings and NPCs being present that somehow further the plot/gameplay. You never see the rest of the non-Pokemon controlling world.
What's more early on you gain a patron, a scientist who is investigating Pokemon specifically because few people understand them, and he pretty much makes you his assistant. Hence why he gives you the research tools like a Pokedex.
I would suspect that the fact that you can access a lot of services for free comes from being involved in that research. Perks of your job so to speak, which just so happen to coincide with your goal of becoming the best trainer ever. I don't remember any of the trainers or Gym Leaders ever saying that they received the services you use for free. It's glossed over for the sake of keeping things simple. I might guess however given the rest of the game that while not pointed out your position (and that of your rival) have some unique benefits. The professor is not supposed to be acting as a patron for everyone after all. It's also noteworthy that while you get free healing from the center, most everything else (goods and services) *DO* cost money.
On a side note, it can also be mentioned that the Pokemon center could also be a charity of sorts, sort of like how you have various "friends of the animals" groups who provide free vetrinary services for wild animals, or (in some cases) the pets of destitute owners. Sort of like how Steve Irwin used to run around looking for sick Crocodiles and stuff on TV and then bring them back to his clinic to give them treatment. The Pokemon Center might not be goverment run, it could very well have an alternative revenue stream, or even be run off of a Trust established by donors (ie a huge bank account full of donations, that generates massive interest... with part of the interest being the only part that can be withdrawn for operations, effectively creating a perpetual source of funding for an organization or interest that can very well increase in value along with inflation and the cost of operation.
Simply put the whole "Pokemon is Socialist" thing is just an attempt to generate lulz because it's anti-thetical to the ideals of non-socialist countries, and can be funny when viewed in that context. Sort of like comparing "Pokemon Duels" to cockfighting or dog fights for laughs.

As far as Socialism not being considered a bad thing goes, understand that there wouldn't be a conflict if nobody believed in it. The fact that not everyone can agree on the best kind of social order is what fuels a lot of divisiveness.
