Another jaunt to the Planes would be a dream come true. Soddin' cutters would find a way to shank th' ghost right outta it though.

As it goes, a Spelljammer game wouldn't go amiss, given the previous efforts in that regard have gone to piss. Giant space hamsters? Corpses of floating gods used as cities? Vile Githyanki? Why, it'd be Mass Effect with a distinctly DnD flavor.

My first thought is that Torment shouldn't get a sequel, but another Planescape would be awesome. Except that 3/3.5E really screwed around with the planar layout and I wouldn't want to play a 4E Planescape game at all.

So many a sequel to Torment would make the most sense, it would increase the likelihood that they'd use the original AD&D setting.

All of this being said, I think the best option would be a spiritual successor with a fresh setting and rule set.

Planescape is a long discontinued product. 3.5 Edition, a new "center of the multiverse" was created in the Epic Level Handbook, of course that product is also discontinued. No clue on what's going on with 4th Edition.
I'd have to double check, but I believe sigil is back in 4e.

I think a sequel to that game is terrible idea (for the same reasons stated in the article).

However if you are looking for a game set the city-of-doors

Here is what is (slowly) shaping up to be a neat MOD for NWN2: http://www.roguedao.com/

Nooo! A Planescape sequel or something else set in that universe would be fine, but please let it be made by a competent studio, anyone. Anyone! But Obsidian.
You seem to forget that Obsidian is mostly Black Isle devs.
So is Bioware, but there are just some games that should be left alone.

Saw title.

"O_O"'d in real life.

Clicked on the article.

Read the bolded summery.

Immediately mentally added 'Andy Chalk' as one of my most hated people in the world. ;-)

Planescape is a long discontinued product. 3.5 Edition, a new "center of the multiverse" was created in the Epic Level Handbook, of course that product is also discontinued. No clue on what's going on with 4th Edition.
Aww man, they discontinued Planescape! Sigil was awesome, and that creepy lady of pain, great. Was there some kind of continuity as to why sigil dissappeared, or did they just drop it? I think D&D must suck these days.

Isn't the Planescape setting no longer supported though, since at least 3rd Ed?

Much better to just create something new in the same setting. /If/ they do make a 'sequel', I hope they go for the tribute route instead as is mentioned in the post. Maybe a reference somewhere to the legend of the Nameless One (or Adahn!), but I hope not a return of characters. I was a bit annoyed that Dak'kon's Zerth blade made it into BG2 (makes absolutely no sense), so that's about the worst thing they could do.

Blame the WOC takeover. They wanted to streamline the game line, so the "weird" settings like Planescape and Spelljammer got dropped with 3rd Ed, to focus only on the dungeons and the dragons (the bog standard discount Tolkien setting).
With 3.5 and now 4 they are lifting piecemeal parts from these games into the current mainline, but without respect for the setting.

Originally both Planescape and Spelljammer served as a way for DMs to tie very separate settings together, so by using Sigil an ongoing game could transfer from a Tolkienesque Dwarves and Elves setting to a game dealing with angels and demons, with the same characters even. That was really one of the major strengths of Planescape and Spelljammer, even without the original setting and gameplay that these made possible.

That title.. I thought.. "Oh lawd, the genre has been saved!" and then.. "There's not going to be a sequel".

I feel like crying now :(

Nah, I'm good. I'm of the mind that Torment requires patience (and not the kind that MMORPG-players have), and that something like that can't be created anymore. At least not as a (whatever this actually means) triple-A title.

Yeah, big no on the Planescape Torment sequel, big yes on a spiritual sequel or other game set in the Planescape setting.

Nooo! A Planescape sequel or something else set in that universe would be fine, but please let it be made by a competent studio, anyone. Anyone! But Obsidian.
You seem to forget that Obsidian is mostly Black Isle devs.
So is Bioware, but there are just some games that should be left alone.
I agree(!).

Some games don't need sequels. Planescape: Torment is one of those games.

Agreed with the "hell yeah" to more Planescape, but Torment is well and truly done, cooked and served. So something in the setting, but otherwise completely original would be great.

Not really, no. Unless Bioware picked up Troika's staff...

"Obsidian CEO says that if there were to be a Planescape sequel, it would have to be done right, thereby disqualifying us from doing it, because we've shown that we're giant cock-ups when it comes to basically anything that isn't writing."

Okay, well, I have mixed opinions about this.

For one, I think there is some (dis)mis-information here. I say this not to offend, but simply as someone who played "Planescape: Torment", and remembers that as TSR was on it's way down there was a lot of bad blood over the fact that a sequel WAS promised if the game sold enough copies to go "gold" or whatever. It not only hit that mark, but exceeded it to a great degree, yet TSR refused to okay the project, and furthemore decided to pretty much axe the whole setting. They did however give it more closure than many other settings getting axed, in the form of a final adventure that dealt with final judgement being visited on the factions and their being ejected from "The City Of Doors", with their amazingly being no sweeping universal changes, bringing into question the whole idea of the factions and their shared mentalities giving shape to the multi-verse... or would there be? A sort of open door for changes in the planned new version of D&D.

To say that the design team had no real plans to do another game, doesn't ring true to me, as the game leaves off at a cliff hanger of sorts, with in most incidences involves "The Nameless One" heading off into the hells to fight in the blood war... The Blood War incidently being the big area being finally fleshed out fully in the supplements at the time, so having another Planescape game, using that material, would have fit with their plans, and given that they did make, and then break, a promise makes me doubt Black Isle having such thoughts at the time.

Also "The Nameless One" is not a character just from this game, he's the subject of a few of the books like "Pages Of Pain" if I recall that actually explain a lot of what happened in Torment.

In the end, I'd love to see another Planescape game, but to be honest it would doubtlessly involve getting control of the liscence, then of course there is the question of engine, and whether to try and build a whole new one with original mechanics for the game, or trying to get the rights to older edition D&D mechanics, or do something with the current edition D&D mechanics... all big liscencing questions.

I'd also say that the entire point of doing a game set in an out of print RPG setting would largely be for people who were fans of the original game. I think such fans are numerous enough to justify the project, but such things require a leap of faith that most companies don't want to make. I don't think Planescape would really bring in much of a new audience as it's kind of a quirky concept, and would be a hard sell if directed at the general, un-initiated audience.

I'd love to see one, but I don't think it's likely to happen on merits of the liscensing questions alone. Also, if they WERE to do one, it would have to be for fans of the original, and kind of take a differant track from what is being said here, it would pretty much have to continue the story, and that means doubtlessly picking up with "The Blood War" and what role "The Nameless One" is going to play. See "Planescape" refers to an entire setting, and Sigil is just one part of that setting, even if it's a major hub. At the time a lot of people playing the game seemed to want the game to explore more of The Multiverse, because despite dipping out of Sigil for a bit, it mostly operated in and around the city, and as cool as Sigil is, that's only the tip of the iceberg.

Truthfully, back in the day, I was ridiculously excited for a sequel set in the Abyss/Nine Hells involving a fallen immortal drawn into the war, especially with all the commando angels coming down from the heavens to keep the conflict going, and so on. There was potential there for something REALLY unique even considering old games like "Escape From Hell". I think that's the sequel people wanted... at least originally when it was being discussed on forums, before all hope was kind of crushed.

They should just make a new Planescape game and pay homage to the old characters. Maybe if one of the old voice actors comes back s/he could be a companion or something.

Happily or sadly, the Nameless One's adventures are clearly over.
