Ocean's Eleven female spin-off

In the wake of the Ghostbusters 2016 movie it appears that we can expect a new movie set in the universe of Danny Ocean, this time with an all female cast.
Ocean's Eight will supposedly be set in the same universe, but it will not be a remake or a reboot, but rather a spin-off. So far the cast list on IMDB includes Sandra Bullock, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Cate Blanchett, and Rihanna.

The guaranteed cast consists of actors with pretty good track records, and Rihanna as an unknown factor.

So far the movie haven't received much attention, though the article I read did contain a few light jabs at the industry as a whole.
In the case of Ocean's Eleven, which was itself a remake of a much earlier film, it seems like a reasonable idea to introduce another group working in the same universe. However I find it odd, despite Hollywood's track record, that the studio would chose to tie itself to an established series instead of making a movie independent of Ocean's Eleven.

Having established these facts I now turn to the community here on the Escapist and ask what you think, could this work? Should it work?

So we going to have a cast of eight women?

Has Ghostbusters taught them nothing? I wouldn't mind a female lead, I wouldn't mind a majority female cast, but an all female cast just screams 'look at me, I'm being progressive'. With eight main cast and not a single male there is no excuse it just seems to be sexism the other way, an all female cast is no better than an all male cast they are both just different sides of the same coin.

At least this time the cast looks better then Ghostbusters's, I'll wait until the first trailer comes out before declaring I wont watch it, but it isn't looking good at the moment.

I'm confident that it'll succeed in being as lengthy and unengaging as the series of films it's remaking.

I read about this months ago. Has it only recently been confirmed?

That article was weird, it said the movie would star Danny Ocean's sister. That can't possibly be true, right?

Never saw the original Ocean's movie, never saw the remake series with Clooney and Pitt, won't see this one. Don't care about heist movies, never will. So they can make new ones of it with whomever they want, I have zero stake in this franchise.

I saw it this morning in an article, but I'm not american and don't really trawl the movie news, so i might be a bit late to the party.
And oddly enough there aren't actually any character names on the IMDB site, or a description, so everything is possible.

What reason is there that it couldn't work?
At this point? The somewhat strange casting choices, almost complete lack of information regarding the movie, public perception regarding all female spin-off and remakes.
In the end most of this is probably caused by my love of Ocean's Eleven, but I think the studio might have a hard time finding someone as charismatic as Clooney for the role of team leader. So far none of the cast members seem to have the swagger that is needed for a proper heist movie, but I'd love to be proven wrong.

Also, I've never heard of the writer for the movie, and so far it seems she has written for a total of no released movies. In terms of Directing they have Gary Ross who haven't really done much in terms of directing, except for the first Hunger Games movie. So all in all I'm somewhat worried that the movie will tank.

"Helena Bonham Carter"

Ticket fucking sold, son. #MaiWaifu

unlike Ghostbusters, this seems like it actually has a pretty decent cast together with the lone exception of Rihanna.

I'm sorry Ri, I love you as a singer but you are not an actor and for a feminist picture youre actually a pretty shallow person intelligently.

So apparently there are only eight good actresses in Hollywood whereas dudes get eleven, twelve, and thirteen in the other movies

I'm tentatively excited to see it though, since it has a good cast, plus I love women and heist movies so it seems like a win-win

Until they release a shitty trailer or something

It has a good cast, and I'd dispute the cult status of the Ocean's Number films. So already a better start than Ghostbusters 2016.

Pretty much my sentiments, except for the fact that the studio are using the Ocean's name without any real indication as to why, of course it is early in the process and they might reveal a good reason later, but for now it leaves me wondering.

And Clooney had better make an appearance, even if it is just a flashback or cameo.

As I've said before of Ghostbusters 2016, if the first and best part of your pitch is 'the same thing as this other thing but with different genital configurations', you /don't have a pitch/.

Nothing says this can't be a good film, any more than Ghostbusters /could/ have been, but if the sex of the cast is their brightest talking point it doesn't speak well of their content or plans. Not because women are bad content, but because we actually do live in a world where 'it stars women!' is as vapid a statement as 'it stars men!' It says they have nothing substantive to say about their /own damn work/.

If it stars humans, no shit the cast is going to feature one or both of those things.

Women have had leading roles for a long time now, including ensembles like Ghostbusters or Oceans [n]. It's not actually a novelty element, and it shouldn't be treated as one.

Genital configuration is only content if you're shooting porn.

Sure, might be good, but why even brand it as Oceans? You set yourself up for a fall, instantly drawing comparisons to the original, which people will have rose-tinted lenses for. The best that happens is that people like it, but still don't appreciate it enough due to it being a reboot.

But no, all publicity is good publicity. Get someone in the cast to say something controversial, and let the flame wars begin.

I think it is important to state that it isn't actually a reboot, it is a spin-off, reboots are, more often than not, a crime against the good story, but spin-off have actually given rise to several excellent stories. But in the end I agree, making it a part of the Ocean-verse(Coined it), seems a strange choice. I might've been more excited if it was a new IP, but I try to remain optimistic.

So a franchise that I utterly don't care about and the one time I watched an Ocean movie I was bored out of my skull so badly I stopped paying attention 20 minutes in and can't even remember which one it is, only that they were trying to rob a casino?

And apparently it has cult status?

Well, I look forward to the internet wars being wagged again while I slowly lose interest and investment in the online community as a whole. Again.

Yeah, I have to admit, of all the recent reboots and spin-offs, this does seem the least offensive and most likely to be alright.

At least, until they do Batman vs Predator.
