I tried to start a religion thread, got shot down pretty horrifically. It seemed like people feel threatened when asked to justify their believes... just didnt end well
As it should. I didn't make this as a religious thread, I made it to try and stop religious threads.
I don't see what's wrong with wanting to discuss your believes. The thing about the escapist is that you already know you have something in common in a mutual love of games (at least i assume so) however A lot of people will immediately jump on anything as you might have noted with jim_doki.

Just because you disagree with something doesn't make it uninteresting to listen to them, the entire point of an argument shouldnt be to be the winner it should be to improve your understanding
I take it you haven't read some of the prior threads, as that is exactly what they turn into, every time.

We aren't trying to convert you. For example, Im not gonna convert anyone here to christianity, nor will anyone make me an atheist (major ones on the escapist). All Im trying to do is help you (or general escapist) understand my religion for more than what stereotypes tell you and I try to understand atheists

I thought this was a place for games not religion who really cares what you believe in as llong as you believe in the all divine powers of video games
The gaming discussion is for video games.
The off-topic section is for anything else.
However, even people on the Escapist are to immature to talk about religion, so they do the one thing they know how. "Report and move on" "Flame war ahead" ect, ect.
These posts give people the idea that it's okay to have a flame war. It's not, if you're not going to give your input in a mature way, then don't post.

What's with all the videos, forums, and posts about someones religion or lack thereof?
Honestly I'm getting a little sick and tired of it all. Should people even care what other people think?
Yes, because creativity can only arise from perceived imperfection. Discussion should take place so people can bridge connections or bring to light disagreement. Perhaps we'll be unable to extract a tangible conclusion for everyone but to be able to set off a chain reaction of shared truths brings us to a closer level of understanding than to sit idly by. Of course, if anyone is feeling overwhelmed by all of the semantic white noise, it's probably best to keep silent and just absorb the input. If weariness consumes you, then go under and come back when you've renewed your enthusiasm for discourse.

These threads are complaints about complaints about complaints about complaints.

And the posts here are only increasing the meta-complaints.

Why, this VERY POST is a meta-complaint.

I'm going to think for a moment about the number of ways that overlaps.

Oh God. It's over 9,000.

They do tend to devolve to flame wars, however.
What do you expect? People of vastly different creeds typically have trouble with one another. And lets not forget that this is the internet. Anything and anyone here is open to rampant douchebaggery.
I never said it was unexpected. But I've managed to have good, flame-free discussions on the subject of religion with some people on this site.
My thoughts have been summed up here rather well:

It's even worse when you consider that most of the threads that aren't just irrelevant weirdness tend to be things like Vs. polls and the thrice-damned repeat threads. I mean, really? Can we just kill the irrelevant Religion threads off already? I've had enough trauma at the hands of argumentative agressors while watching the OP laugh as the number of pages swelled to completely ridiculous levels. That isn't to say all religion threads are a bad thing: but it's almost a guarantee that some jerk will swing into the thread, armed with a bunch of out-of-context quotes and pretentious standoffism, and destroy the whole thing. One needs only to look at what happened to the Missing Link Fossil thread to see this process in motion (where religion should never have been involved in the first place). Some people just couldn't resist taking their potshots at various faiths, and thus the flames of religous war erupted over what could have been a awesome discussion of the fossil's discovery.

I generally don't believe that a single forum post can make any difference at all, especially with religion. I suppose the reason I enjoy posting on stuff regarding religion is because I enjoy speaking out against religion (boring extremist stuff) as a malignant tumor which slowly kills humanity by giving control to filthy fear mongering monsters whilst assuaging fears of death and thus encouraging killing through the use imaginary words of salvation. But that's just me.

I saw my name in the title of this thread so I thought I'd show up and see what's going on :p... however as to agreeing to leave each other alone yes provided I don't think someone is a direct threat to me (think Auschwitz) in which case no I won't.
