Some elements of Wolfenstein reminded me of NO ONE LIVES FOREVER 1+2 (especially searching through file drawers - including the sound!).

Such a shame that Fox dropped the franchise, a remake/sequel would (hopefully) be a lot of fun!

Why is it a now unspoken fact that health regeneration is more realistic than health bar? I don't know about you but when I get a cut it takes longer than five seconds to mend. And yet ever since Peter Jacksons King Kong and Call Of Duty 2 a FPS without regen health is laughed at for been unrealistic, it downright odd.
By who? I don't think I've ever heard people claim regen is more realistic than health bar. More fun, maybe.
Is there anyone who DOESN'T think weapon degradation is a stupid idea? That to me stinks of a game penalising you for playing it. Realistic or not, its' pure bullshit!
I feel like Fallout 3 handled weapon degradation reasonably well as opposed to System Shock 2 (for example) which was like "this weapon may or may not break in 5 shots, whatever"

Haven't played Wolfenstein yet, but loved RTCW so if it's even half as good as that then I'll be happy. But NOLF2 - what a fantastic game, a real classic. Humorous, fun, intelligent but not taking itself too seriously... different and varied styles of gameplay depending on the level. Great game.

Interesting that they're bringing back some of the old games only with updated graphics and the like. There is a reason some of them are referred to as 'classics' :)

EDF2017 is hard to track down? I got that game on Amazon the first time I looked for it (and ebay lists it for 30-40 AUD for Australia including shipping). Global Defense Force (PS2) may be harder to track down though.

Talk about an open world where you just kill anything that moves really, REALLY reminded me of Prototype. Sure, you don't sweep a giant laser, you sweep a giant tentacle but the effect's the same, dozens of half-zombies. And hell, I loved the faffing about part of Prototype, I could see the same thing working with a ranged weapon based game.

Wait, what? A little over a month after your tirade against Nintendo for the "popcorn nothing" of Wii Sports Resort, you're now advocating arcade-style "shooty fun" games? What are you looking for?
Simplicity in a genre we care for. Wii Sports may be simplicity but it's also sports and I think most of us didn't care for sports games before Wii sports came around either. Sure, we're the nerdier parts of the gaming audience but sports games were major games even before the Wii and we weren't left out.

Anyone remember Black? once you ignore the barely-there story, it's the closest thing to a for-the-hell-of-it shooter I've played in the last 5 years.
Really? It struck me more as a cover based shooter where you also have to search for tons of secrets to be able to complete the level. I'd say it's about as much of a mindless shooter as Halo, maybe even less.

Another week, another trolling - which is all these articles have become really. Gone are the days of talking about the game whilst making it funny (perhaps referring them to older games it blatantly ripped off like Bioshock/Systemshock) only to be replaced by a startling obvious message of "Games were better in my day what what."

Speaking as a long time gamer it's easy for me to say that Alone in the Dark 1 was the best thing I have ever played and further should compare it every new release. "Well sure, the games okay, but where's the guy in the evening jacket rearranging all the furniture?"

Old games are simply that, and no matter how much you want there to be a Dungeon Keeper 3, a non shitty Red Alert/C&C sequel, Duke Nukem 2 or whatever, it's not going to happen. So bearing that in mind isn't it about time to stop comparing every new game to every old game?

So basicly games that will be forgotten unless remade or have new sequal now and then.
Like Shinmu nearly invented QuickTimeEvents, but nobody knows it.

At this point I'd just like to take this opportunity to say...
"NER NER NEE NER NER! I'VE GOT EARTH DEFENSE FORCE 2017 AND YOU HAVEN'T HAHAHAHA!"

Yes I'm aware that I'm an asshole

But, surely we need the crappy generic games just as much as we do the blockbuster titles?

I mean, if every game was hearalded as pure awesome, we would be bored out of our skulls, forever lost in a sea of genius.

Likewise, we need the awesome games so as to propel the industry as a whole, lest we drown in mediocrity and stale plotlines.

It's one of those metaphysical ying-yang things.

He really should stop doing this. His videos are entertaining, but in detail his theories and ideas just unravel themselves.

I'm quite happy with Halo and Gears of War, and their sequels.

Of course, they're also the only shooters I play.

You forgot to bash that game type where you have to protect some idiot/object, and all they do is get in your way so that you can't kill anything at maximum efficiency.

I'll go ahead and assume you're talking about Shenmue here.

I wasn't even nearly because, respectively, way back in 1983 and 1985 Dragon's Lair and Road Blaster's whole gameplay was QTE after QTE.

Shenmue's director did came up with the term though.

Do you know any place or period in human history where there was such a thing as "too much genius"?

I agree with Yahtzee that 3D and console co-development has nearly destroyed gaming. Spend any time in the Fallout crowd and its impossible not to pick up a thin conformal coating of hate for Fallout 3.

Fallout 3 while very good, took out the things which made Fallout Fallout and replaced it with homogenized goo. While you could enslave people (including children), it left out the sleazy, tawdry and sometimes homoerotic sexual aspects of the game as well as the ability to attack the children. It dumbed down the skills system and could be easily beaten as a mindless FPS in a few hours. There's a good amount of "stuff", but the interaction with NPC's was sparse and limited by comparison. The choice in opening doors and safes was generally limited to lock-picking or hacking.

How much would we all have loved FO3 to have been a sprite based, isometric, turn based game which was deep in play with many voiceless NPCs to interact with.

Too bad people are fixed on "better grafix" and don't want to read since they don't equate to better games.
Fallout 3 was made to appeal more to Bethesda's crowd, ie TES, Oblivion in particular, fans.

When a game trys hard, THATS A GOOD THING. If there is more gameplay? GOOD. If there is even more epic songs? GOOD. If its smart and challenging? GOOD. Does it include a homage/tribute to a great game? MOTHER FUCKING GOOD.
But, if the game is not fun...

...And what's so bad about Yahtzee having different views of games than you guys? It's not the end of the world.

Wii Sports and Resort do strike me as a bit of a throwback to the "screw accuracy", arcade-y sports games of the 8-Bit and early PC era, before Madden and the like made simulation of the actual rules of the game a priority. There's nothing wrong with the latter approach, but the "sports casual" subgenre has its merits.

I loved how you totally shafted SHODANFreeman at the end, nice job!
If by "shafted" you mean "Didn't even bother to make an intelligent or well-mannered response to a perfectly reasonable argument while conveniently ignoring the fact that in a slightly later post I point out a number of other people involved with TMI that aren't 'fanboys' and he still somehow failed to realize that TMI was made by competent and seasoned developers and went on to make a 'point' that it takes more than one person to make a game which makes no sense because that has nothing to do with what I said at all", then I totally agree.
