im preety sure tht the ps3 is not the only console to have a major fuck up
xbox live went down for nearly 2 weeks about a year or two ago and besides a week off form online gaming is not a bad thing!
but i somehow feel tht if this were to happen to the xbox, sites like this would be more simperthetic to M$ instead of casting blame like they are doing here IMO :l

I only used the pre-paid PSN cards. My account has never had a credit card number or any billing information. Guess that was the smart thing to do. I hope others are more careful with their information in the future.

Luckily for me i only had PSN Cards on my account seeing i still don't have a CC, for the same reasons Xbox live could have been a target probably still is.

But Microsoft has more experience in this then Sony so yeah of course Sony is a easier target.( If you look up how many times Windows is and has been breached etc etc. throughout the history of Microsoft .)

Perhaps not as big as Sony has now but the Internet Populations has grown massively since then. Because of all of this the scale got bigger and the negative consequence has been increased AL-long side off it and sadly Sony has been the first big victim.

Nintendo will probably be just as sensitive with their next console. Unless they learn from what has happened to Sony now.

Yet Sony did drop the ball for informing us this late, which is not done. All though i won't switch to the Xbox360 because it lacks a good Crimson Skies game. I'm sticking with Sony because they have Uncharted, Little Big Planet, Valkyria Chronicles, Wipeout HD/Fury and in the future more of the same and ofcourse ICO/SOTC Collection and the Last Guardian and the upcoming game from Ghibli studios.

I hope all and all that Sony has learned much from all this and will be forever the better of it. May they Improve themselves up on or burn.............

So, correct me if I'm wrong, but is this the biggest video-game related fuck-up catastrophe ever?
You're thinking of the 3DS.
No, no. The 3DS will not cost Nintendo $24.5 billion to clean up. And it isn't hacked so badly that they get your credit card info.
It just gives you headaches.

Well good job Geohotz.

By giving others the capability to break the law you've succeeded in hurting a major corporation. Go burn in hell.

Perhaps Sony could've done better but that doesn't exempt him of what he did. He let this happen with his innocent little, "Oh I can't control what people do with it." Fuck you. Fuck you Geo and die.
You do realise he only messed with the hardware right? I'm no expert with these things, but I'm pretty sure he didn't anything that could help people hack PSN.
He messed with the hardware and released the code to give people full access on how to mod their PS3s. From an old news report people could mod their consoles into giving them priveledges they shouldn't have that would only be reserved for developers and Sony themselves.

His fault.
Actually I would say the blame lay with three parties Sony first and foremost as it is their duty and obligation to protect their customers information, the hacker who actually compromised PSN for obvious reason and then GeoHot but really if the hacker was smart enough to cause this much damage then I doubt they needed GeoHot to release the rootkey first they could have got it themselves.

I'm not. PSN getting hacked still doesn't give the 360 any decent games (my opinion, back off 360 fanboys). I mostly just play single player anyway, and only buy stuff on PSN with point cards from Walmart.

Im sorry 360 but I have invested way too much in my ps3. In my eyes it has the exclusives and the hardware that appeal to me. I use a fake email address to sign in anyway and I cancelled my debit card so I should be fine. Plus where else can I get my yearly dose of Metal Gear?!

I am in no way jumping the XBox bandwagon over this. I've been debating for a while now of getting an XBox anyway, for the very few games I'd get for it, but this whole thing isn't pushing me any faster. My PS3 will always be my primary system. I can honestly live without the online overall. I only ever really played Uncharted 2 online anyway. I do, however, hope this gets resolved quickly and that no one truly got hurt in the fallout of it in case I *DO* want to play something online. It'd be nice so I could access any DLC that comes out, or when Beyond Good and Evil is out too.

I wonder what fraction of that 1/5th is actually seriously going to stop using PSN entirely and go over to 360 and how many are just stomping their feet until the PSN comes back up and they go back to it like nothing ever happened.
I think it's less about it being down and more about Sony losing info to hackers and then not making a real effort to tell it's users. They posted on their blog instead of their newsletter which probably has 20x the subscribers. I didn't even know they had a blog.
Wait.. You didn't know they had an official website? That's what their blog is. THE PlayStation site. EVERYTHING goes there before any of the automatic newsletters which only promote new games and PSN deals.

Please.. You have GOT to be kidding.

Man, gamers sure have gotten all drama queeny nowadays. Consoles aren't just a system for playing games on, they're a WAY OF LIFE! Something bad happens, you show how angry you are by CHANGING CONSOLES!!!!

Cause really, it'll totally make a difference and a statement and everyone will think you're amazing and that you took a stand.

Meanwhile, I'll be enjoying inFamous 2, Last Guardian, Resistance 3, Dark Souls and Uncharted 3, while not caring about any of this drama and just playing the games. You know, what gaming is meant to be about.

I'm sticking with my Ps3 because I still think its the superior console and that isn't changed because some douchebag hackers compromised PSN.

Disclaimer: The above is my OPINION so if you disagree, please feel free to not tell me all about it.
Totally agree. It's not like God of War, Uncharted or Twisted Metal games are going anywhere. Best games, best gamepad... Sure, PSN issue is annoying, but it's not so bad.
P.S. In my country ID theft is impossible. Sucks for UK though.

Your ignorance is astounding. Don't point fingers when you aren't aware of what you are talking about.

Geohotz simply hacked the PS3. He didn't hacked nor provided any access to the actual PSN/Sony servers. So far I know, you cannot hack Sony's servers through a PS3.

Professional and more dedicated hackers done it. In fact, I think black hat hackers took offense to Sony's arrogance and decided to pull this trick off.

But don't blame Hotz for this, he might be an asshole but in no way the instigator or someone who made this possible.
So far as you know you don't know shit. So I'd think twice before calling me out on my ignorance and pointing fingers when you have just a little clue yourself.

I won't personally. I already have a PC, and none of the 360's exclusives really interest me.

Many 360 exclusives get a PC port down the line anyway, so even if I was interested in them, I could get them eventually.

Nah, I still love Sony and would never dream of selling my shiny box ... till PS4.

I supported them against Geo and I don't think Sony could have stopped hackers, they stoked the flames by deciding to sue a hacker but I would rather not have to play a losing battle against hacked PS3's in online matches.

I can tell one thing is for sure, PS4 will have one hell ova system ... which will take a whole month to hack!

I'm not gonna jump ship, I love my PS3 beastie and it's not its fault for these shenanigans!

In all seriousness, no, why? Shit happens, and while I'm not happy with what's going on and I'm worried about my credit card, I'm not gonna leave just because this happened. Every console has its' issues and the PS3 happens to have this one, so I'm not gonna get all excited and bail.

I think a lot of people were also being sympathetic towards Sony... until they found out that their personal information had been released as well as bank details.

Well... I already have a 360, but it's in storage. As much as I probably SHOULD jump on the XBOX Bandwagon now, I'm probably gonna keep using it until the next console generation, simply because it's much more convenient for me to get games for around here.

Seriously, my local Gamestop's PS3 section is about 2-3 times bigger than the XBOX and Wii sections combined. As much as I liked the XBOX, I didn't like having to pay the $15 a month extra for online bullshit. (can you still access XBLA and such with the free subscription?)

That being said, again. I'm probably gonna stick with the PS3 for now, and just use the PS3 cards from the local wal-wart instead of using my credit card.

I'm a gamer. I follow the games I like. If developers jump ship I'll follow, but for now, Ill forgive a first offense. Probably be switching to PSN cards though.
