You don't have to choose between one and the other. You can have both. And I really doubt that many people would "switch", considering they'd have to switch out their game collection too, as well as many titles being exclusive to the PS3.

hell yeah, everything that this guy said.

"This isn't the end of the gaming industry, but you can see it from here."

Yes, sony screwed up but there are too many organizations getting involved in kicking sony while it's down. If this trend continues, and mark my words because it will, this will truely be the beginning for the end of gaming as a major industry and a lifestyle. Here is what will happen next:

When any other gaming company makes a mistake, people will flock to jump on the exaggerated punishment wagon. This will cause developers and other gaming workers to become afraid of their work. This will add to the pre-existing stress of the massive layoffs that happen every year. Working on video games is becoming less of a permanent job with growth opportunitties and developers are being treated more like contracted workers. If you're a developer who doesn't work for the Big 3 or a 3rd party studio that has put out some hits (Insomniac Games and Bioware for example), you're pretty much job hunting at the end of every project.

Game devs will start looking for better job security and will make career changes away from gaming. Companies that either make or just simply fund game development will view the industry as a risky investment where the risk is unbalanced with potential benefits/profits and they will pull out. After that all that will be left is niche pc gaming and apps.

I'm not trying to be a preacher of wrath and doom but there has been a lot of negativity surrounding the gaming industry lately, more so than usual. It used to be that some nut job psychiatrist or some parent group would get flustered and make a small fuss that would be forgotten about a month later. However, now it seems like one thing after another is happening and situations like that tend to steam roll into something worse.

I hope it doesn't come to that
Long live gaming as a lifestyle and an industry.

I'm eyeing the exit, but for a different reason. I have to share the PS3 with the family, and as a result, can not play many of the games I want to play. I'm not willing to buy a second one for my room, so I'm either saving up for a gaming PC, or buying a new TV for my room, and a 360.

I kind of pity Sony. I feel like this might severely damages their chances at doing any good in future console races.

No (at least, not yet). E.T. caused the entire videogame market to crash, only to be revived by the NES in '83. Easily the worst in recent times though - Sony have lost billions. Huge knock-on effect, too.

Anyone who's owned a PS3 for a number of years and is considering seriously selling it off for a 360 is fickle and impatient in my opinion. This just isn't with Sony, I didn't think anyone would take the risk of inputing their credit card information to this online service whether it be PSN, Xbox Live, or whatever simply because things like this can happen to anyone. So my online is down, maybe for the next month or two it doesn't make a difference.

Jump to 360? Maybe if I didn't have any good games to play? Lemme see what I got that I've yet to play at all since I've been non-stop playing Pokemon Black on 3DS. Hmm...

-Mass Effect 2 (including DLC)
- LittleBigPlanet 2
-Dead Space 2
- FF6-FF8 (PSN)
-Portal 2
- Dragon Age 2
-Bayonetta
-Demon's Souls
-Lost Planet 2

Man oh man just what am I gonna play with no online? [sarcasm] It's not like any other good games are coming out later this year. Nope can't be..
-InFamous 2
-Uncharted 3
-Twisted Metal
-Trine 2
-FEAR 3
-LA Noire
-Ratchet and Clank: A41

I don't see how anyone can seriously consider leaving Playstation to Xbox 360 just because your offline for a while (Take a Break!). I don't want to have to pay monthly payments no matter how small for a system just to access online ON TOP of monthly Comcast bill payments. The PSN store has movies, music, PS3 games, PS1 classic titles, Wallpapers, themes, Avatars, PS Home, and so much more to keep me entertained. I just bought 2 $50 PSN cards from SafeWay and they are sitting in a nice box on top of my PS3 for the day online comes back online.

Had my PS3 since April 2008 and haven't had a single problem with it. Don't worry they'll regret switching come November 1.

I'm subscribed to their news letter and I've received nothing, and I don't check their website because I'm subscribed to their news letter. Way to overreact man, not knowing they had a blog is sure easy to tie into not knowing about the SCEA.

Had I gotten an email from their PSN nonsense I wouldn't be posting this now would I? I found out here and the most I've gotten from Sony is new offers on the PSN every week. Now from my perspective how would you react to that?
I can't believe that because I am NOT subscribed to their newsletter, and I still got this email:

"PlayStation(R)Network

===================================

Valued PlayStation(R)Network/Qriocity Customer:

We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011,
certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account
information was compromised in connection with an illegal and
unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this
intrusion, we have:

1) Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;

2) Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full
and complete investigation into what happened; and

3) Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our
network infrastructure by rebuilding our system to provide you
with greater protection of your personal information.

We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill
as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and
efficiently as practicable.

Although we are still investigating the details of this incident,
we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following
information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country,
email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login,
and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data,
including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip),
and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may
have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your
dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have
been obtained. While there is no evidence at this time that credit
card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have
provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity,
out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit
card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have
been obtained.

For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email,
telephone and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive
information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email,
asking for your credit card number, social security number or other
personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information,
you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation
Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that
you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation
Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or
accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them as well.

To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we
encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and
to monitor your credit reports. We are providing the following information
for those who wish to consider it:
- U.S. residents are entitled under U.S. law to one free credit report annually
from each of the three major credit bureaus. To order your free credit report,
visit www.annualcreditreport.com or call toll-free (877) 322-8228.

- We have also provided names and contact information for the three major U.S.
credit bureaus below. At no charge, U.S. residents can have these credit bureaus
place a "fraud alert" on your file that alerts creditors to take additional steps
to verify your identity prior to granting credit in your name. This service can
make it more difficult for someone to get credit in your name. Note, however,
that because it tells creditors to follow certain procedures to protect you,
it also may delay your ability to obtain credit while the agency verifies your
identity. As soon as one credit bureau confirms your fraud alert, the others
are notified to place fraud alerts on your file. Should you wish to place a
fraud alert, or should you have any questions regarding your credit report,
please contact any one of the agencies listed below:

We thank you for your patience as we complete our investigation of this
incident, and we regret any inconvenience. Our teams are working around the
clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as possible. Sony takes
information protection very seriously and will continue to work to ensure that
additional measures are taken to protect personally identifiable information.
Providing quality and secure entertainment services to our customers is
our utmost priority. Please contact us at 1-800-345-7669 should you have any
additional questions.

So did you really not get an email? Because I did, as did my brother, my best friend, my canadian best friend, my mexican PSN friend, and everyone that I happen to talk to who happens to own a PS3.

You're thinking of the 3DS.
And you're thinking of the ET game that nearly killed gaming in it's infantile stage.

:p
Bingo, I'd say the almost total collapse of the videogame industry is the only thing to match the fuckery here.

Right so because sony got hacked through no fault of their own, 1/5 users are planning to change to a console thats got 1 good game coming out this year and could have been hacked just as easily if the hackers wanted to target it.

I for one am sticking with sony and I do not blame them for this hack!!

One-Fifth of PS3 Owners Are Eyeing the Exit

A new survey has found that one-fifth of PlayStation 3 owners in the U.S. are considering a switch to the Xbox 360 in the wake of the Great PlayStation Network Security Breach.

So 8 pages of comments and only like 2 other people hinted at how ridiculous this claim of 1/5 of U.S. PS3 owners are thinking of switching?

Andy Chalk said:
One-Fifth of PS3 Owners Are Eyeing the Exit

Commissioned by CouponCodes4U "in order to assess gamer attitudes towards the affair," the survey encompassed 2132 people across the U.S., finding that 41 percent of them own PlayStation 3 consoles.

So 41% of 2132 people, so roughly 874.12 people.

Andy Chalk said:

89 percent of those PS3 owners said they were concerned that their personal data may have been stolen in the breach; 65 percent said their trust in Sony and PSN had been "greatly affected"; and 21 percent claimed they were considering selling their PS3 units and switching to Microsoft's Xbox 360.

So 21% of the 874.12 PS3 owners from the survey are considering selling their PS3s and getting a 360.

21% of 874.12, so 183.5652 people. Lets say for sake of argument 184 people.

184 people, are representative of 1/5 of the nations PS3 owners? This survey, article, and claims made from this information seem to be band riding and flame baiting the anti-Sony press as of late.

And before anyone accuses me of being a PS3/Sony humper: I have owned every major console since the atari 2600, and my perfered gaming platform is the custom PC I built. The only fanboyism here is to intel cpus and nvidia gpus in PCs.

I'm just upset my neflix won't work on my PS3...and I won a 360, but I'm not about to go crying to them exclusively. I still love Sony's line up. I also like the currently free online.

I think the lawsuits are bullshit. Yes, they should replace any money used by a card that's taken, but paying damages for people who have to cancel cards? Time, effort and cause payments? You should keep an eye on your card anyway. Effort? You look at the page and see it's okay. The ONLY thing I could see is replacement cards, but I doubt those cost that much.

And who the fuck says I have to sue them? I don't want to part of the lawsuit.

Back on topic though, I don't blame Sony in this. At least they're using the down time to restructure security, better than opening the online early again just for it to get fucked up.

I love my PS3. Controls are better (I actually do have an example, Fight Night Round 4...I own for both systems), I like the exclusives better, getting online is easier. Overall, while it doesn't have a Halo or Gears for online, it's still my favorite system. I trust Sony for now. It's just made me hate hackers more

Right so I'm lying just to take the piss with sony? I don't give a crap who makes the device they screw up I'm not going to be happy about it. I got no email and if you don't believe me that's not my problem, there's no Sony Email in my inbox besides great offers from the PSN, and as I gathered my cousin has nothing in his inbox and nor does my friend.

Believe what you want, I don't care.

Why? WHY!? They're working to get it up,they fucked up, so what? If it happened to microsoft what would happen?

As I explained in another thread this has "Bank Job Fallout" written all over it. Everyone sees the job, everyone sees the criminal get past the defenses and everyone sees that they make it look a bit easy. So everyone acts like it's the end of the world, talks about how they've been cheated (despite it being the first time that bank is ever robbed) and goes on to sue or leave.

What they don't see are the months of planning that had to go into the criminal's attempt, the information that had to be gathered, etc...

People don't even know if SONY's defenses were good or shitty yet and they're simply yelling "HOW FUCKING DARE YOU!?" as if this has happened every year since the PS1 was released 11 years ago. Once in 11 years is actually a fucking good run.

Yeah, I'm pissed it happened to me too, but people are over reacting. People swinging the litigation hammer, claiming to represent us all (Fuck you, no you don't represent me) thinking they can rush SONY into doing a better job if they scare them with litigation.

Let me tell you something. Make SONY focus on a court case AND this and it'll go slower.
ok the only reason im pissed at sony is they pretty much asked for this when they started sueing hackers publicly. now i dont suport these peole at all(i think geohot was right in what he did as i see it as jail breaking)but you dont go out and kick a lion cub and not expect to deal with its much latger parents. now i love my PS3 in fact uncharted 2 is my favoret game but those who currently control the company are fucking up alot. I hope that PSN comes up soon because if it doesnt they may never recover from this and i for one would be very sad.

You guessing at math and bad at statisctics. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confidence_interval
Posted earlier. That is a plenty big sample size for 95% confidence.

Edit: I agree on the claims brought up btw. Considering switching and actually doing it at tradein value loss? Nope.

If microsoft were feeling frisky they could made a temperary 1 for 1 swtich. just go get people using xbox.

the xbox fan boy in me says: the ps3 it only does offline, and we pay for xbox live because they offer better service and better protection of your account

what i have to say: i really dont care one way or another
