This upcoming saturday (march 3rd) the Nintendo Switch will have been on the market for exactly one year. That's right, it's been that long.

In any case, the console seems to be doing well. Better than the Wii U. Exact and reliable numbers are hard to come by, but it looks like the Switch has already outsold its predecessor. It has both a new main series Mario and Zelda. Third party support seems to be increasing, in particular on the indie side. Games, both new and ports, are coming in at a steady pace.

Anyway, I thought it'd perhaps be a nice idea to take a look back. The ups. The downs. The stuff that made you go 'wait whut'. Those who already own a Switch, how have you liked it so far? If you don't have one, do you intend to eventually buy one? What would it take to convince you, if anything? What about the future? Got stuff on your wishlist?

I'm planning on getting one somewhere in the next months or so. I feel the Switch has reached the point where I can justify the purchase to myself. There's about half a dozen games available I'd like, and again that number of upcoming ones, which is sort of my minimum requirement. If I do, it'll be my first current gen console owned, the 3rd owned within 2 years after launch, and my 5th Ninty system (not counting handhelds) overall.

If I would ask for something, it would be for more Wii U ports. That might sound strange, since there are some among you who don't particularly like a new system getting lots of ports of older games, but hear me out. I didn't get a Wii U. It never really met my requirement mentioned above, but it does have some games I'd like. The Switch already has or is getting some Wii U ports, but I wouldn't mind me some Mario 3D World, Mario Maker, Pikmin 3 and some others too.

i love my Switch. games like Zelda BOTW, Splatoon 2, Mario Odyssey and ARMS being on the system in launch year was fantastic.

but then Nintendo managing to keep their promise and also release Xenoblade 2 in December 2017 was incredible! most people, myself included, automatically assume that an RPG of the size and calibur of Xenoblade 2 would definitely be delayed to be a 2018 or 2019 game. but the fact that Nintendo has managed to release that, along with other surprise's like Mario + Rabbids and ports of highly regarded 3rd Party games like DOOM has been just awesome.

the question going forward now is, can Nintendo manage to maintain and keep up the momentum of the Switch going forward.
yes they sold alot of systems in year 1 and they have announced some awesome surprise's like Metroid Prime 4 and Pokemon Switch, but Nintendo will need to find a way to keep making large scale announcements in a similar vein to Metroid and Pokemon Switch, if they want the hype levels for the Switch to remain.

as much as i love Metroid, it's hardly a system seller and it's something that only core fans like me are interested in History has shown.

Pokemon is a popular franchise with mainstream audience's but i think the mainstream crowd will want Nintendo to keep releasing things like Animal Crossing and Smash Bros for that crowd to be satisfied and hyped going forward.

as for the Ports, i don't really want a million Wii U Ports, but i understand why they're happening.
As long as Nintendo keeps putting out lots of New content for the Switch then i'm ok with the Ports. but if it's only Wii U Ports and ports of old 3rd Party games that the Switch gets, then me and Nintendo have a problem.

i bought a console to play games that are actually new. not old games. i don't mind ports as long as i get lots of new games too.

True, that is something I'm wondering about too. Mario Odyssey and Zelda BoTW gave the Switch a nice initial boost, but it also means they've already fired what are arguably their biggest guns. I agree that if they are smart, they'll want to maintain a regular schedule of (first party) heavy hitters AND frequent smaller (third or first party) titles. If not, they run the risk of a Wii u repeat.

Sure, new games should be the priority. I was just think along lines of "If they're going to port stuff, bring over the best of the Wii U". Give those a second chance on a more popular platform so more people can play them, rather than leave them stuck on the 'loser' among Nintendo consoles (if going by sales numbers).

would like one at some point in the near future before the apocalypse and/or my brutal murder/suicide. If only to at least satiate the grievous Zeldagen build up in the bloodstream from overactive, understimulated Zelda-glands due to years of neglect, and probably abuse. But money and other more pressing matters require serious attention before the affliction of this affectionate aficionado

I want to get one for Zelda and Mario Odyssey. I almost bought one the other week when I had a hangover. Thankfully, I sobered up by the time I had gone home and got my GAME card (gotta have those points). And thank God since I have had to spend ?225 on a car service and ?345 on a new mattress.

The thing about it is, it always comes down to can I justify the purchase? I have my PS4 with plenty to play on it and precious little time, do I need a new console in my life? The lapsed Nintendo fan boy in me wants one so I can see it being 6 months to a year until I buy one.

I almost bought one since i have some spare money laying about, but then i saw that it costs around 350 euros and thought better of it. As much as i would like to try out botw and perhaps mario odyssey i just can't justify spending around 500 euros for it. By the way, games for switch costs 70?, what the f..

There are some games on it that I already want to play, plus there's the new Prime game as well and SMT 5 coming out for it in the future. At this time I'm waiting till I get employed and figure out my finances from there to figure when I will get the system. Part of me wants to get it sooner rather than later, but another part of me wants to wait until around E3 time to get a better handle on what to expect more in the near future/end of this year.

Chimpzy, why? Why did you make a Switch thread? Now we'll have 6 pages of fanboys rebutting anyone who doesn't say that Switch is perfect...

Anyways, I plan to get it later (maybe for my birthday), once I save enough money. I didn't get it right away because, unlike the Wii U, I didn't see a launch title that caught my interest as much as ZombiU did (which made me go "shut up and take my money!" the moment I first saw how it used the touchpad).

I don't know, the release anniversary is coming up and it seemed topical. Truth be told, I am still a little worried about things devolving, but so far everything's been quite reasonable.

Here's to hoping that lasts. Please?

The only sucky thing about it is the battery life and that the next pokemon game will have its online features locked behind a paywall.

I got one for Mario Odyssey and er yeah its ok honestly by the end of the game I was glad to be done with it. As for BOTW I will try and play it at some point but ill just borrow my friends copy.

Impressions on the console were these joypads are terrible, why is the game such a pain to put in? portability is nice but not something I will likely ever use (but I knew that). UI seems fine though and no problems with the console itself and tbf I personally dont think I have ever had a problem with a Nintendo console in reliability and outside the Virtual Boy and NES Ive had em all I believe.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is probably the biggest reason I got one but then I learnt they were doing DLC for it so im inclined to wait until I can get the complete version or the basic one at a cheap price. At the moment its just been sitting there since just after christmas when I finished odyssey and I expect it will continue to sit there doing nothing for quite some time but with Bayo 3 coming for it thats a near dead set purchase. I mean I bought the WiiU for Bayo 2 and Xenoblade chronicles X and while there were a few other games I got for it they were pretty much what I used it for.

In short its fine but not many games I want to play on it that I cant play elsewhere.

the paid DLC so far has mainly been some helpful items that can already be obtained in game, and a few extra quests.

the first bit of major DLC for Xenoblade 2 would be the New Game + DLC which adds a 2nd playthrough option and new characters among other things.

the New Game + DLC thats out next week is free for everyone.

It?s cool that it?s doing well, but I probably won?t be getting one. The limited time I have to game is when I?m home, so portability is a tough sell personally. If anything I?ll probably wait to see what comes next.

I can't say I'm getting too much enjoyment out of it. I bought it primarily for Super Mario: Odyssey, which kinda sucks. The only other game worth a damn on the system is Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which I already played most of on the Wii-U.

It's only been one year, and its popularity will guarantee a lot more exclussive content, so I guess my outlook is not that bad. But as it stands I don't feel it was worth buying yet. Probably should've waited a couple years.

Wish list? I guess I'd want them to make a Kirby game that isn't some gimmicky bullshit, and has some proper passion and budget poured into it. The new Kirby for the Switch looks like it's just going to be a retread of the rather vanilla flavored Wii version.

Didn't like the Switch at first.
And then came the announced/released titles. Plus the idea of playing Splatoon 2 with my partner is now making me want to get one, hopefully this year.

you don't want a "gimmicky bullshit" Kirby but you don't want "vanilla" Kirby games?

I hate to break it to you but the main Kirby series is probably one of the most "Vanilla flavoured" Nintendo franchise's there is. and anything that isn't a "Vanilla" main Kirby game is generally the type of "gimmicky bullshit", as you call it, that you don't want like Rainbow curse on the Wii U or Pinball etc.

I like Kirby games. but the main Kirby platform games are probably some of the easiest and stale, or "vanilla" Nintendo games I've ever played. Broaden your Horizons a bit and play other stuff like Metroid, Xenoblade, Pikmin or Fire Emblem if you don't want play a Nintendo franchise that feels as stale as Kirby does.

At this point it's pretty obvious that you never bet against Nintendo. You'll get a few cheap shots in at best before they roundhouse kick you in head, leaving you a drooling invalid. The only thing I find was problematic was no Virtual Console and they've been pretty mum about the upcoming online service. The next year looks to have some interesting titles from 3rd parties and the Nintendo Labo alone looks to be fascinating. It won't be too long until we hear about 2018 plans, which I can only guess will have surprises
