This... is unforgivable. they are cutting a portion of the single player game out unless it is bought new? what will be next? "if a used copy of our game is detected on a console, a virus will be downloaded that turns your Xbox into a robot that will proceed to steal your valuables, kill your family, and throw your dog out the nearest window."
ugh.
Its not a part of the single player story, its just a bonus add on that has no effect on the rest of the game.

Oh no, im going to have to support a developer in order to access a negligible amount of content D: The end of gaming is nigh !!
Please. They got paid when the game sold the first time around. Try applying this "Support the developer" logic to other products. Unless you can honestly say you've never bought anything second hand, don't make me laugh.
While yes its true i do buy second hand games, its something i try to avoid doing, simply because I do want to support the people who make games and give me endless amounts of entertainment.
This really isnt that big of a deal, they arent cutting out any major parts of the game, its simply an incentive to buy new, and if later people who bought second hand want to have a bit more content, they can just buy it.

Although it does suck for people with a limited access to the internet, and developers should try find alternate ways for such people.
Here's the problem: Think about it a few years down the line. It's nary impossible to buy a new copy then, in any way that would affect the developer. Get it used, and you'll have to pay even more for what will seem like, to you, cut content. That's not likely to endear one to the developer, or publisher

And most of the money from a new sale goes to the Publisher. You know, some of whom are trying to prevent us from suing them in a class action. Or the ones who put always-online DRM on their PC launch.
True but is there really any other option to support a developer? Short of donations? Anyway in a few years down the line the price for most games released around now will have dropped significantly, so theyre still getting a much cheaper product. Besides, this Catwoman stuff looks more like bonus content than cut content anyway
The developers are, very often, paid in advance for their work or paid along the way. If a game sells well, they get a bonus. So this whole "Support the developers" think is a false dichotomy

That's amusing. I paid about $12 for Arkham Asylum. New. Benefits of waiting six months, I guess...

And people are still thinking of buying this whorefest?
Yes. Because of Arkham Asylum. Which was one of the most awesome games I have ever played in my entire game riddled life.
And which I loved. Which is why I loathe this.
How is it a whorefest exactly? And what is that?
Look at the female characters. It's a pretty easy word to work out.

Then you've got multiple characters thrown in - so there's no time to work on them. And the Joker has "got better" after Arkham. And Penguin is a cockney. And they've just chucked the whole atmosphere away for the new approach of "every button press must be awesome" approach.

But with all these new goodies...they'll bring in all the lockdowns they've been planning.

Arkham Asylum JUST got onto my machine despite Windows Glue the Game Up Live, and now they're riding on the franchise.

And it's coming out straddling the reboot. Which re-writes all the background. And may get unwritten.

Bleurgh.

Why say you will block pre owned users from said content?
Wouldn't it be more marketable (and probably more accepted by people) if you said that people who get the game new will have Catwoman as a bonus? -_-

In that case some second hand buyers might wait till the price drops so they don't pay extra?

I mean.. patience is a virtue for the college going, low income and moneysuffering student.
Or that would be my philosophy anyway... (I get games from my work now so... can't complain really.)

Honestly who actually cares about being able to play as Catwoman anyway? Last time I checked the title it said "Batman: Arkham City"
For me, depends on if that grappling hook thing is Catwoman exclusive or not. I haven't been very avidly following Arkham City, so I don't know if they've mentioned it or not. Point is that if she has exclusive abilities, I'd probably play as her.

Doesn't affect me much but I still feel that they should have announced it fair earlier.

All what, 2, 3 female characters? I have no idea how a cockney Penguin would make something a whorefest.

I'm not sure what the reboot has to do with anything. It's always been separate canon, if one cares about such things.

That aside, announcing this 5 days before launch is not cool.

Ok for all you people that say it doesn't effect you, still have that dumb 12-25 digit code you have to type in, and if your a ps3 owner probably about 2 new firmwares to download ;p

Anyway it is a bad move to do this when they've been flaunting the " play as catwoman" the last several months.

You'd think Dev's would have faith that their game is going to sell well enough without dicking people over telling them they'll need a online pass for something thats not even online, when their game is already getting 10 out of 10's and probably around 200k preorders.

Wait isn't Catwoman a part of the FUCKING STORYLINE. I really can't stand publishers with this stupid ass shit. First no Robin and now Catwoman are out if you didn't have the cash to buy the game new. They been hyping O' Girl for months now yet now they're gonna take her away GREAT PR move you money grubbing bastards.

All what, 2, 3 female characters?
Selina Kyle: Gameplay wise - Makes sexual remarks while beating pepole up with a cleavage-tastic suit.
Pamela Isley: Wears next to nothing - poison kisses.
Doctor Harleen Quinzel - Dresses up as a fetish nurse and stays next to her man who she's useless without. And - with respect to Tara Strong - isn't voiced by Arleen Sorkin.
(And had an "affair" with Pamela - which then gets redacted in Arkham Asylum - grrr)

Rather than their normal archetypes of Thrill-seeker, Eco-Terrorist and Spacecake Acrobat, they all become sexy sex for fiends but secretly love Bats.

Because if you're taking history from canon, it has to be the right one - not just a hodge-podge without meaning. Joker isn't a fighter and had Bane venom in him - you don't get better easily from that.

That aside, announcing this 5 days before launch is not cool.
You think that's gonna be the last of the unfortunate announcements?

I agree it should just be DLC free with new purchase of the product rather than labeled and an online pass.

I've no problem with this practice but I'm sure the game just lost a few sales based on this announcement because of how passionate people are against this kind of action.

As much as I am against this type of thing, buying second hand hurts developers, doesn't it? (I don't really know, I'd assume it does).

I buy a ton of games second hand (mainly from Gamestop because of their week long "no questions asked" return policy) but all it does is benefit Gamestop, who I believe is evil.

If you look at it like this though, buying the game used isn't that much of a savings unless you wait a significant amount of time after it was released. By then you could either get it used for around 14.99 or new for 19.99. At that point, buy it new and be done with it.

Plus, if you get the game for free (via a friend or whatever) then what does 10 extra bucks for something optional matter? It's not like you're paying the full retail of it on day one.

That being said, nobody is forcing you into this. Nobody is saying "buy this dlc or we'll kill your parents (also known as the Batman special)"

It's entirely optional. So if you don't like it, don't buy it.

The problem with Online Passes in single player games is obvious. NOT EVERYONE IS CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET. Older 360s require people to own a separately purchased adapter just to connect to the internet via wi-fi.

At least with multiplayer online passes, people who need it can redeem it.
I had forgotten about this...which is stupid of me considering I haven't had a stable connection to Xbox Live since about July. The thing is, I've been considering myself part of the minority since before the time of the Xbox360 when it comes to my less-than-stellar ability to connect to Xbox Live.

Yes because just adding her to the game as vanilla content would REALLY hurt the sales.

Seriously, i hate you gaming companies, i hate you.
