Do I have to use a hammer to get it inside of people's head that WoW doesn't have 11,5 million accounts anymore? Not since they closed the Chinese servers?

There are more or less 6 millions of players in WoW.
Almost positive they re-opened them.

Since when is maintaining 11.5 million players "chilling news"? It's still amazingly successful, especially when you consider all the problems they've been having recently in China (which accounted for about half their player base two years ago).

EDIT: Didn't read it properly. That is quite surprising... Still, I have played a few MMO's until like level 5 then just got bored. If a game isn't holding my full attention at the start, where it REALLY should be trying to, I just throw it away. In a manner of speaking lol.

I'm sorry, but that's just hilarious. If they can't get folks passed level ten, they're doing something wrong. Dreadfully wrong.
Misinterpretation.

It only takes most people ten minutes to figure out they don't like mmorpgs.
You're right. Just look at the "Community" you have to deal with.

I never got past level 18. To hard, not enough reward for killing things...

I'm really not too surprised that WoW is slowing down. Cataclysm will either restart the WoW engine and get people playing or be a bust and spell out WoW's decline. As for the 30% that actually play past level 10, I don't find that too surprising. The 20/80 rule comes into play here (basically 20% of your customers make up 80% of your business transactions). So keeping 30% is actually quite phenomenal.

Perhaps if players were able to do something more interesting or challenging than kill spiders and rats before level 10 it wouldn't be so bad...

Cataclysm will give them a jump in numbers. Completely revitalising the Azeroth will likely bring back old customers *coughlikemecough* as well.
When I first played the game in 2004, I got to level 10 inside of an hour and by the 60 hour mark was only at level 30. I stopped right about then - progress was too slow to keep my interest and playing as a warrior meant my interaction with the game was generally relegated to the same exact sequence of attacks again and again.

The second time I played, I got to level 20 inside of 5 hours but again lost interest.

The third time I played, after Wrath of the Lich king, I made it to level 50 inside of 40 hours of play. The most concerted effort I had ever made in the game stopped at level 71, when I was finally in spitting distance of playing the game with all of those people who pestered me to play for months. In a "perfect storm" style even, my account was hacked and regaining control took 2 weeks and many hours on the phone with Blizzard to resolve. By the time this had happened, all my friends had left. I was still looking at another few weeks of grinding to hit 80 and without any friends at the top to movtive my progress I lost interest quickly. When my account lapsed (the hacker had apparently used a short duration pre-paid card when he gained control) I couldn't be bothered to renew. Without other people to play with there was no reason to return.

That said, my least successful experience with an MMO to date has been Fallen Earth. I downloaded the free trial, and played for perhaps 3 hours. The 'shooter' portion of the game is marred by the fact that the gun mechanics are appalling and the "everying else" segement is damaged by a complete lack of direction. I finished the starter quest and a few others and then was thrust into the world without so much as a pat on the back. I could have tolerated miserable mechanics (those can be fixed) or an utter lack of direction (I can learn) but when the two combine I found nothing worthy of inconviencing electrons.

I got well past level 10 during my trial. I even went with a 3 month subscription after that.

But then I stopped cuz I couldn't handle constant grinding. I'd make friends one day only to come back the next day with them 20 levels ahead of me. When I play I game I enjoy camaraderie, and WoW didn't offer that as much as I would have liked.

probably cause you get like 2 buttons to play with, with a trial account you can't see half the features of WoW and you get one shotted by squirrels at the start. Most people just think "Fuck this" and goes to play something else.

Meh. I've long ago stopped worrying about WoW. I still consider GW to be the far superior MMO, all things considered.

They should just try making the trial longer. 10 days is a nice bit of free time but I have seen MMO game demos go into the 20s.

Ah WoW, how you have wasted (and helped) my life. Sure I get friends, but they are over 2000 miles AWAY! GAH! I really don't want to be 80, but I gotta get that last bit..

Those who don't play till 10, shame but you have a life :D

Yeah...im not worried. Considering WoTLK is about to be released in china (Finally) They will see a massive jump in number there, and also with the release in cataclysm, new players will be interested due to ads, and old players will return.

I also noticed they did an adding campaign a bit back, which is still going. That should also increase members.

WoW isnt dying anytime soon.

Also, im surprised at those trial player statistics...I was so amazed by WoW that I kept playing, and by the time the novelty of it wore off I was level 54, and then they announced WoTLK for my troubles, to bring back the novelty and get me playing Warcraft 3 again for a recap on the Lore of Frozen Throne...

The giant that is WoW has stopped growing? That's pretty big news. Yeah I think I suffered the first 10 level failure thing. I got to 8 I think it was and was sick of it.

I know how Blizzard could get me to play WoW, but they'll never ever do it.

1)No subscription fee. I'm always broke from bills.
2)Complete graphic overhaul. I hate the way pretty much everything looks.
3)Make the male elves look femanine. I hate buff Elves.
4)Release a single player version. I don't do group raids or PvP.
