Cutlery, while nice, isn't always on the to buy list of the very poor. I don't see how this is such a shocker but I do think Oprah isn't nearly as worldly as she would think she is.

I just ate a whole meal with my hands; it was fantastic. I pity poor Oprah, who in her wretched existence has obviously never once come across finger food.

I don't know much about Oprah, being a Briton as I am - but I've certainly never heard anything good about her. From what I know, she seems to run some sort of cult?

Why do so many Indians always want to study in England? Go to America - it's bigger and there is so much more stuff to do and see. England is a small island with a shit economy, a huge population and a cold weather.

Uh, I think people are missing the point with the "eating with your fingers" thing. I'm pretty sure that they eat, like, curry and rice with their fingers in India (at least the poor people do). That's very different to sandwiches or popcorn.

I was about to point out the same thing. People don't eat with their fingers in India because they make lots of burgers and sandwiches over there and it's more convenient.

It's actually a hygiene thing, one hand for sanitary stuff and the other for eating food. In a place like India this actually makes a lot of sense. Knives and forks could easily either go unwashed or washed with dirty bacteria-filled water.

OT: I never really cared about Oprah before, not to say I diliked her, I just didn't care. But holy crap this really shows how ignorant she is about the rest of the world. Especially the whole "we're number one!" on education.

This reminds me of something; Back in the last American election, we in New Zealand were initially hearing about the fact that there might be a female president in the US for once. Then, Oprah appears on T.V. and informs us there's an African running too. We all quickly forgot about Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama was the new big interest. So whenever I hear about Oprah, I reminded of how the US voted for her in the election.

Yeah, I know, that's a hyperbole, but all I know is I would never had heard of Obama if it weren't for Oprah making headlines (perhaps a statement as to what makes news here...)

OT: If what was written in the article was true, then it seems she's just saying some spur of the moment idiocy. People say dumb things all the time. Thing I notice most of all is that every internet forum feels the need to crucify people for mistakes. Alls I knows is I could care less about Oprah has to say about India, whether it's true or not. Let's all just ignore her, publicity will only make her stronger. Hell, if you could get people watching and clamoring over you by saying something stupid (and were making money off of advertisements or viewers or what have you) wouldn't you act up?

Well...yes? Not sure where I said they needed to be American, in fact I was pointing out the ignorance of someone clearly living in her own little bubble, where her ways are the best and we all need to fall in line. Obviously it's a cultural thing that goes without saying but they don't just do it for no other purpose than that. They have a reason which is: It's more hygienic, especially in a place like India. Try eating with the wrong hand over there and people will almost puke from how disgusting you're being.

A third of the foodstuffs you have listed ARE eaten with HANDS.

Just as it takes a small amount of skill/co-ordination to use cutlery, you need to have some skill in order to cleanly eat with your hands.

Its much easier for someone in India to come to England to study on the count of them being a former member of the British Empire and member of the new commonwealth, immigration laws are much more favorable between the commonwealth nations.

Plus not everyone thinks America is the centre of the world, other nations do realise that there are in fact other nations with education systems.

Its much easier for someone in India to come to England to study on the count of them being a former member of the British Empire and a Commonwealth member. Makes it a hell of a lot easier for them to get a visa ect to study here.
