I've ranted before about how we don't need cutlery. Usually drunk, to my friends.

What food can't be eaten without cutlery?
Soup, rice, mashed potatoes, lentils, applesauce, ice cream, custard, pudding, mousse, jello, minced meat, beans, eggs, porridge, breakfast cereal, yoghurt... all things which would be much harder to eat without some kind of utensil.

God bless forks, spoons and the USA.
A third of the foodstuffs you have listed ARE eaten with HANDS.

Just as it takes a small amount of skill/co-ordination to use cutlery, you need to have some skill in order to cleanly eat with your hands.

Name 5.3333333333333333333333333333 then, which are just as easy to eat with your hands as with a spoon.

I chalk this up to total ignorance of culture. In India, the different regional etiquettes and techniques for eating with hands reflect centuries old cultural and economic history.

One big reason people continue to eat with their hands in India is the desire to maximize their appreciation for food; feeling each dish's unique warmth, moisture, or stickiness (who doesn't like to feel sticky things sometimes?) is something your fingers can do better than your mouth.

It's especially satisfying when eating curry with rice. Rather than mix a whole curry with all your rice, you combine small amounts at a time, making a ball of rice and curry that has just the right rice/curry ratio so it'll neither crumble nor be all drippy. It takes a bit of learning for westerners, but the more you do it the more you realize it's so much more interesting than inhuman utensils.

TL;DR: using forks and spoons is like wearing a raincoat in the shower.

On topic: I eat pizza, burgers, sandwiches, croissants, naan + curry, celery, etc. with my hands and am perplexed by ppl who don't.
People who eat burgers with their hands are heretics and must be burned on the steak. Misspelling intended.

OT: So Oprah's a *****, who would've guessed that. I did. I've never seen her show or whatever else she does but she strikes me as a *****. Now I know for sure that she's a downright condescending *****. What a *****.

This reminds me of something; Back in the last American election, we in New Zealand were initially hearing about the fact that there might be a female president in the US for once. Then, Oprah appears on T.V. and informs us there's an African running too. We all quickly forgot about Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama was the new big interest. So whenever I hear about Oprah, I reminded of how the US voted for her in the election.

Yeah, I know, that's a hyperbole, but all I know is I would never had heard of Obama if it weren't for Oprah making headlines (perhaps a statement as to what makes news here...)

OT: If what was written in the article was true, then it seems she's just saying some spur of the moment idiocy. People say dumb things all the time. Thing I notice most of all is that every internet forum feels the need to crucify people for mistakes. Alls I knows is I could care less about Oprah has to say about India, whether it's true or not. Let's all just ignore her, publicity will only make her stronger. Hell, if you could get people watching and clamoring over you by saying something stupid (and were making money off of advertisements or viewers or what have you) wouldn't you act up?
Luckily you guys dont vote in our elections then o_O

ot: Oprahs always been crazy. she even forced a pornstar to change because she was dressed too mature for what she was trying to show. then spent the rest of the show telling her she worked for pedophiles and she dressed like a little girl so pedophiles could get a kick out of it.

Wait . When did ophra become a *****? She gives a lot of money to poor people . She gives a lot of things to her fans . She helped so many people over the years . She has helped share inspiring stories ... Like why the Oprah hate? Is it because she's black?

OT: i'm 100% certain in my mind that it didn't happen like that , and people just trying to male Ophra look bad . She is and will always be an African-American Hero.
I find it insulting that you immediately ask whether they're racist when they spoke of privilege and nothing else.

OT: eating a sandwich and then a choc ice, go finger food!
It was just a question like any other . A simple "no" would suffice .
Except it's not just a question like any other, it's a ridiculous, out of place, unnecessary assertion which drags the conversation into the dirt. You are literally the only person I have seen who is disconnected enough to use it unironically. Therefore the only logical conclusion is that you're joking. Sadly, it's not a funny joke. Try harder next time.

Racism is no laughing matter. No joke . I was litterally asking if it was because she was black . As i said , a simple no would suffice .

Many of them are ingredients for curry but I'll list them.

RICE: that was the one that really got to me, trying to grab the last few grains of rice with the tines of your fork gets really annoying and spoons aren't much better. (not to mention its a staple in South East Asia who ALSO eat with their hands.)

Lentils, mince-meat, beans, eggs: all baseline ingredients for curries, but I decided to to challenge myself and produce food that WASN'T in a curry.

Eggs: Hard boiled, Hors d'oeuvre's, fried and served with a spicy tomato relish atop a rice base... Moving on.

Beans: Beans on toast.

Mince-meat: Fried with flavouring added (favourite is oyster sauce, goes great in sandwiches)

Lentils: Actuall I couldn't think of a non curry dish.

There 5.

I guess it needs repeating, "Just as it takes a small amount of skill/co-ordination to use cutlery, you need to have some skill in order to cleanly eat with your hands."

And doesn't it seem a little racist to assume, or even think it's such a strong possibility worth asking about, that people only dislike her because she's black. It couldn't be her demonstrable ignorance i.e. making a poverty stricken Indian man cry in front of his kids?

Honestly? when I eat alone and cook meat I especially love eating it with my hands. The whole steak, I enjoy it so much more! The juice leaks all over your fingers, its even more messy with steak sauce! Eating meat with people takes away so much of the enjoyment for me.

No, it wasn't, in the same way that asking "why are you such a horrible person?" isn't just a question like any other. Even though you phrased it as a question, you're essentially accusing the people who disagree with you of racism. It's like asking someone if the reason they like anime is because they're a pedophile, and being completely baffled at their indignation.

I don't know much about Oprah, being a Briton as I am - but I've certainly never heard anything good about her. From what I know, she seems to run some sort of cult?
PFAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Sorry, that wasn't nice, but... oh Lawd, that was unexpected.

While she HAS started her own... "cult" is serviceable, we'll stick with it - her actual claim to fame is being a total media mogul. She has a highly respected book club, she ran a very successful TV talk show for years, she has her own magazine, she has her own TV channel, she's very generous and gives away tons of stuff on her show, and she makes frankly hilarious amounts of cash.

And, as this article demonstrates, she's increasingly disconnected from people in poverty.

Ah well... it happens to all the rich, really.

Also, I have Indian friends who cooked us a big Indian feast, and we ate the whole thing with our hands. It was great.

Obviously it's a cultural thing that goes without saying but they don't just do it for no other purpose than that. They have a reason which is: It's more hygienic, especially in a place like India. Try eating with the wrong hand over there and people will almost puke from how disgusting you're being.
Are you sure you have the right country? I know that eating with your left hand in the Middle East is an insult similar to spitting on the food, but my parents were in India for a while, ,and while it was "preferable" to stick with the right hand, it wasn't a grave insult to dive in with the left.

Then again, my parents are white. Maybe they're more tolerant of those crazy tourists doing traditionally "gross" things.

Eating with hands is commonplace in a whole mess of eastern countries. That goes for India as well. Some people are maybe a little more lenient that others but it's still considered a 'dining rule'.
There is an exception though and that is if you eat foriegn food. Which is a shame because I'd be interested to see an Indian try to eat one of my pot noodles with their hands

I've never liked Oprah to begin with. Sure, she did some good shows when she started (especially the "Talking to Skinheads" episode), but later on she became a reflection of the middle-aged, isolated women who make up most of her viewers. Essentially, I see her as a black version of my mother (she even has the same hair), and that's not a good thing. Both of them jump on whatever bandwagon comes along just to jump onto another one a few weeks later. When my mom was worshiping Oprah like the second coming of Christ, the food in my house changed every month whenever Dr. Oz or Oprah started raving about a new food or diet. In short, Oprah needs to go away.

WHAT?? no its not cause shes black. Why do you care that shes black?
Its cause shes a disconnected from society rich *****. Besides catering to the lowest common denominator on tv, bringing forth the abomination that is OWN tv(seriously how fucking vain is that), telling people what to like and how to act, televising her "charity" to the globe so we can see just how good she is and that in no way are these donations for improving her image or helping her financially GRRRRRRRRR
I hate I hate.....i hate....

but I dont give a shit that shes black, never have.
So ... Your just jelous ... Gotcha .

Oprah is the original rags to riches story
At least you are quick to judge people like a good Oprah fan. Keep up the good work.

Plus English university's would rather take more international students than local as their fees are practically doubled. There's also an element of prestige for an Indian to come to the United Kingdom, study and make something of him or herself over here.
