Parents Group Denounces Supreme Court Decision

As a parent who is also a gamer, I'd like to say...

DO YOUR JOB AS A PARENT AND PARENT.

This isn't just about gaming, parents in this country nowadays want shit so regulated that they can basically push the kid out and say 'done' and return to life. What you feed your child, what you put in front of your child's face (be it gaming, television, movies or literature) are all under YOUR control until they are legally able to make their own decisions. Stop sitting there and bemoaning the availability of porn, R rated movies, and M rated games when your lazy ass is the one enabling your child by actively not monitoring their cultural consumption.

This is not, by any means, a rant on how parents should be frightening, controlling freaks. It is instead an appeal to a bygone era of common sense and needs.

I know this post is in vain, but it felt better to get that off my chest anyways. I get so terribly sickened by the people I have to share the title of "parent" with.

The youngest of children? Like, six? How is a kid going to get to a game store with $60+ dollars in hand and Buy DNF? When I was that age I barely had enough money for a soda; and even then I had to work in the tobacco fields for three weeks. I didn't even have the hand-eye coordination to play Link.

Saming as always idiot parents:

Look after your fucking kids instead of expecting other people to do it for you, seriously are you that fucking stupid?

You know what MY dad did when he didn't want be doing something? HE STOPPED ME DOING IT!

Himself.

Because he was a GOOD PARENT.

When t comes down to it much like television or movies games also have an age rating on them, it tells you jackasses whether the game is suitable for your kids, if it says 15+ and your kid is 12 then you don't buy it, infact scratch that, you make an informed decision based on how mature you think your kid is and how well he or she might cope with the content of the game and then decide whether to buy it for them. But then of course, you're all a bunch of lazy, bad, self-righteous parents.

----------------------

Ah, I feel much better venting that, as you may have gathered I get rather angry when people are such bad parents that they expect the government to look after their kids for them.

There is no excuse as to why these parents aren't supervising their children properly, I won't accept that it's because they have a job because if they really care about their kids they would either arrange to have less hours or find a job that will allow that.

No, their decision does not "replace the authority of parents", it give parents the authority to make decisions on what games their children play. If the decision had been different, then parents' authority would have been replaced with that of the government. These people have very bad logic

Hah, nice. Glad that the SC has ruled this crap down. If the whiners would just do their job and parent, none of this would be a big issue.

Because they're the sorts of parents who will either:

A) Give their kids tons of pocket money to make up for the time they don't spend th their kids because they're too busy working. (Because they'rebad parents and work means more to them than their own kids. Children need parents when they're growing up, not money)

B) Buy the games for their kids to keep them quiet. (Yes, these people are so stupid that they'll defeat their own argument before they even make it)

My humane response: "Well then! I hope I never turn into that." My gamer's spirit response: "...Fuck you."

In all seriousness, this is stupid. The parents think that video game retailers will sell games to kids? There's the whole thing about needing a parent and that's not even a law! Yeah it means it may not be enforced everywhere, but still. Mr. Winter and I need to have a long talk about that bill too: He states that it would've prevented minors from selling games, but that's the thing!

If he's against stuff that's "bad" for kids, then he hasn't been in a video game retailer like GameStop. Does he really think that ever game store in the U.S. will withhold video games from minors? There's always gonna be that one guy who had a rough day and forgets the law. But it won't just be one place, it'll be a ton. The fact that they believe it wouldn't harm the video game industry is a stupid thing to not realize.

My reaction to the PTC's reaction, as expressed by a violent video game.

P.S

I realise I'm not the first to be struck by this idea. Oh well. It bears repeating.

You do know that consoles (At least the PS3 anyway, I don't know about the xbox, as I don't have one) have a parental control system that prohibits the playing of games from a rating level of your choice upwards? It's really not that difficult to control what kind of games your kids play.
You do realise that most parents will know absolutely nothing about that or even know how to set up the parental controls. They dont exactly tell you about them or anything. Besides that its not like its very hard to get around them.
The thing is if a parent is that concerned about something that is not even going to harm their kids then they can simply take the short time to learn about the parental controls of the PS3 or 360. Set up password accounts for themselves as the admin and simply not allow their kids account(s) to play the games they don't want them to. Real hard to do...I know, would've taken minutes to learn!

Parents have to do their damn job and not freak out when the world shows them something they don't want the kid to see.

"The carefully worded California statute..."

Are they being serious? The reason this decision was 7-2 instead of 5-4 is because Alito and Roberts thought the wording of the California law was faaaaaaar too vague to be accepted as a Constitutionally allowed law. I guess they neglected to read the entire decision of the court and instead just heard what they wanted to hear.

How long-term is long-term? The long-term effect of being a kid is becoming an adult...

If parents are so afraid of their kids getting violent videogames than why don't they just NOT buy their kids those games, and better yet, why dont they just use the parental restrictions that come pre-installed in every single game console out there! Since when is it the supreme court's job to take care of other people's kids.

"This ruling replaces the authority of parents with the economic interests of the videogame industry. With no fear of any consequence for violating the videogame industry's own age restriction guidelines, retailers can now openly, brazenly sell games with unspeakable violence and adult content even to the youngest of children," Winter said.
I couldn't keep reading after that because I was laughing so hard. How about instead of bitching they get off their fat asses and pay attention to WHAT THEIR EFFING DEMON SPAWN ARE DOING. If your kid buys a game you don't want them to play, take it away, break it, then backhand the little jerk.

I love how people like this make such sweeping statements as 'countless independent studies back this up' without quoting a single study. Usually because such studies either do not exist or are anything but independent...

"The Parents Television Council, or PTC, has been protecting children from "sex, violence and profanity on television and in other media" since 1995"

You're doing a shitty job.

Tl;dr "What? We actually have to be responsible parents?!"

For christs sake. A little exposure to these things is good for kids. Otherwise they grow up to be anal joyless adults that form groups like this.
