Hey man, my dad did the same thing with Goldeneye when I was a kid, although I was about 11 or 12 instead of 7.

You should hear some of the things he screamed at me when he found out I own GTA IV. I'm 21, and this was recent.

they've never stopped me from playing anything since I was 7 and RAGED at Rayman 2's Whale Bay :p
Oh my god, this.. so much of this

OT: My parents don't mind me playing games and my dad enjoys playing Tomb Raider and Call Of Duty but I don't think I could ever get them to see them in the same light as a film. It does really annoy me that the moment I mention games around people who don't play they just switch of, but luckily most of my friends play games.
Wait, you... you raged a Whale Bay too?

:O
Oh so much rage, it didn't make sense when I was younger to use the bubbles to breath, I rage quitted and I haven't gone back, I really should play that again but the disk has got a split :(
I think after about 50 tries I finally worked it out, but then THOSE BLOODY PIRANHAS STOLE MY BUBBLES AND WQHJDIUOASSSDBGT CASPOFICJUADSVH';ADS]#FV[DS]AC#ADSKX AND THEN I GOT TO THE NEXT BIT AND COULDN'T WORK OUT WHERE THE F*&^ TO GO AND jiu(g*yYUI=0DF[POI7U8Ty*(&tjJHAU89uY&TY()89yu9djiopwqui'

...I think I've finally got that off my chest.

So much closure :p
Just let it all out *pats on back*

my dad was one of those guys who obsessed over pcs when they first came out. One time they got this big payout for a car accident. And mum said he ran 'with his balls flapping behind him' to the computer store to get this awesome computer. If i remember correctly it had 512 mb of space on it. 512 something anyway, i like games but ive never been good with the technical part.

and he used to play doom and command and conquer obsessively. He doesnt like new games though and doesnt play much anymore. I have found memories of playing warcraft with him and playing doom.

My dad isn't too fond of them, but he doesn't really care. When I got my first "M" rated game, he said thusly, "So long as you don't take it too seriously, you can play whateverthehell you want." and I took that to heart. My sister doesn't really care either. Despite that, he does sometimes show some contempt for the things. I remember we had an argument over the Supreme Court case, but that's really as extreme as it got. No smashing consoles or "get this filth out of the house!" or anything. Still, I'm not always comfortable playing games when he's around the house, I get self-conscious like that.

His girlfriend, on the other hand, is really interested when I bring up topics regarding video games. She's pretty supportive of it, actually. She's really interested in the "Catherine" game of all things (she is a huge romantic), and I said I'd play it alongside with her so she could make all the decisions.

So, overall, they're pretty tolerant and don't really care, and I'm thankful for that. I don't have any obsession over games or whatever, I always try to keep a good balance of playing games so nothing extreme will ever happen.

My mom can beat the first Tomb Raider without ever restarting a level. She can also get ridiculously far in any version of Tetris or Pacman you can think of, although I bet most Atari kids could do that.

But video games are stupid... (and if they are feeling clever) You just sit there and stare at a screen.
THAT ISN'T WHAT A MOVIE IS AT ALL.

Seriously though, my family is pretty okay with games. My grandma says they rot your brain, but she never really stopped us from playing them. My mom isn't a fan, and practically doesn't stand mature games, When my brother first started playing games, he was addicted, and didn't do little boy things like color, go outside, etc. My dad actually likes games, he was the one who first brought a game system into our house, bought a nintendo 64 for me and my brother for no real reason, is a hardcore WoW player, and even watched and joked with my brother as he played Dante's Inferno.

So if I was in your shoes, I would not be a happy person with such ignorant people in my life.

So you're dad smashed your games in front of you in order to shield you from the violent content inside... irony much?

They are wastes of time. All forms of entertainment are. That's kind of the point.

If you're saying that he's wrong for judging your chosen form of time wasting, then congratulations. You've won my support.

If you're saying that you don't believe that video games are a waste of time, then I've got to agree with him, man.

I just explained to my dad that I would prefer to spend the time that he spends reading (non classical) fiction, watching television, and watching movies doing something else. After that, he totally got it. I played sports, learned musical instruments, kicked ass in school, and was active in my church. When I wasn't doing those things, I liked to "stare at a screen". If I didn't do those things, I probably would've gotten a lot more crap for it.

Games are a time sink. Everyone has activities which fit this description. They shouldn't be the focus of your efforts, but they're ok. They are, by definition, a waste of time, though. It'd be nice if everyone picked a time sink/diversion/form of entertainment that also produced something valuable or taught them a skill, but almost no one is productive 100% of the time.

But be a well-rounded person. I know an awful lot of useless people who do poorly in school and have no life outside of video games, and those people deserve to get their asses kicked by their parents. If you're one of those people, then quit your bitching. If you're not, then continue to excel at whatever you're doing, then show your Dad your results and tell him to have a nice tall glass of "I'm doing just fine shut the fuck up".

I don't know how old you are, but my guess is that your Dad is probably at least partially correct. Good habits start early and fall off easily if not maintained. Bad habits are easy to pick up and hard to break. He's just trying to make sure you pick up more of the former.

My dad was the one who handed me a controller in the first place and got me hooked, he was an avid gamer before he got ill but lately he was going to have a go at L.A Noire. My mum is also cool with it though she claims she wouldn't have the patience to play them, she does know a lot about games though, just from watching me and my brother. She recently claimed that she's going to try making the Portal Cake.

My dad doesn't care too much. He never understood games, but he's totally tolerant of whatever I play.

My mom is a bit inconsistent. Some days she's like my dad and doesn't care, others she's angered by the violence of the games I play (Left 4 Dead or TF2) and demands I stop.

But without violence in L4D those gosh darn zombies would be having a Bill sandwich.

You can't convert everyone though like the fifties and rock and roll old folks just think it's noise for the kids and will never get into it.
My Grandad(he's 73) plays games. Whenever I go over to his we sit down and play some split-scren PS2 games, although his eyesight isn't good enough to play next gen "visually busy" games.

I beg to differ

One of my sisters is actually pretty into gaming. I had told her a bit about Mass Effect so she asked if she could play it and I said sure. She pretty much fell in love and when she left for her house in another state she bought a 360 so that she could play it. Since then bought a few other games and really enjoys games that have a strong narrative.

My other sister is dating a guy who's really into gaming and he got her to play Dragon Age. The game really floored her because she still thought of video games in terms of Pacman and the like. So seeing a game with that much storyline really surprised her. She doesn't seem to be getting into gaming at all but she really respects the medium now.

My dad has played a few games, mostly flight simulators. He also played a bit of Battlefield 1942, but he's mostly into puzzle games that aren't terribly complex. My mom pretty much ignores the whole medium.

most my friends play games (although all they seem to play is halo and gears) and while my mom doesn't mind the games i play because of my age and has watched me play and beat red dead redemption and has played portal 2 co-op with me, she still doesn't want me to play games like; left 4 dead 2 or Dead space 2 in front of her. and i can understand that.

God, I'm glad my parents think that anything I enjoy is cool or don't care, but say "Thats awesome." Because they know sheltering a child is WORSE then opening to the chaotic, outside world which we live day to day, anyone who thinks otherwise is pretty stupid, because being sheltered then exposed to the world opens up the chaotic phase, while letting them enjoy their world will not open this stage, but smother it throughout their lives, but in a much less way, and is more or less healthier to do.

Again, if games are bad, what about cinema, books, or art? Seriously, I remember my first sighting of a penis was in a mueseum when I was about 7, so if I saw that, and my class saw that, whats so bad about them playing a game?

Also, if your dad doesn't understand, point out the violence and sexuality in art, literature and cinema, if he thinks GAMES are bad, they'll look tame if you show him the correct things, also, don't show him porn, show him double wammy of those classic horror films, again, games are one of the tamest mediums in terms of violence because they haven't been around as long, there have been movies and books that have covered, to this day, confidential topics, Broke Back Mountain, some of the David Lynch movies [don't show your dad that unless your sure he can take the CRAZIEST of things.] I think all these parents that think games are bad, should watch some of the shit thats happening in cinema, literature and paintings and of course, art. Then they'll turn into the biggest hypocrites in the world.

To sum it up, if there ARE parents out there who thinks games are a BAD THING for your child, consider the world around you, its NO PLACE for children, yet we have kids, why? Because of fucking genetics, we have genetics to continue the species, in fact, movie, TV, art and books are ALL BAD FOR YOUR KIDS, yet they read, yet they watch, and yet they look, if you think games are a bad medium, you could say the same about EVERY OTHER medium that exists, ever. You'll then be a hypocrit, so think what your thinking through.

Edit: Me and my dad played Final Fantasy 7 through togheter, I feel bad, but he did most of the grind, while me and him took turns killing the boss [it was fun with seporath] and my Mom played the Lion King with me, she didn't enjoy it, but it was bonding, so she played it anyway, it was probably what stops her from playing anything now in days.

My parents think it's a waste of time, well think of it this way, right now I'm training for MLG, look at people like Seananners or TotalBiscuit, they get PAID for playing games!
I'm training for a goddamn job, not wasting my fucking time.
Oh, your serious? *chuckles!* Anyway, I find it funny you used the abbreviation, because most people who use it USUALLY think they have enough skill to do it, to be honest, you have to choose several different titles, learn them, then get very good at them, this can take a while, give or take a year, you can't just sit down this Call of Duty and instantly get a job from being good at it, you have to also be good at Starcraft 2, and probably a few fighters like Street Fighter. Again, you have to LEARN them and become very GOOD at them, and be well varied throughout different genres. If you want a job for it, you have to make a name for yourself [tournaments come to mind] at a game retailer or whatever, and have a friend record it, if you win, upload the video and show it off to the world, if your lucky enough, just keep doing tourneys for different games, then either wait to be approached by a existing group, or make your own. This takes about 3 - 7 years, depending on luck and actual skill, I highly suggest you go get a regular job and try to get into the circuit, also, DON'T USE MLG ANYWHERE, If your going to go pro, say PRO GAMING, why, BECAUSE ONLY LITTLE KIDS SAY MLG!
