Patriotism

Patriotism just means that you love your country, not that you think it's superior. That, m'learned friend, is nationalism. I quote admire the American patriotic spirit, God knows we could do with some of it over here.

OT, I'm proud be be British, just because we've come up with quite a bit of pretty cool stuff over the years and we've had a major role in shaping the world as a global power.

I know what you mean but its been my experience that Patriotism, Nationalism and Xenophobia tend to go hand-in-hand in some horrible little tag team.

If people can separate Patriotism from the other two then good for them I guess.

But on a side note, i wish our politicians would have a good look at what Finland are doing, they have many good solutions to many everyday issues...

I am proud to be Swedish because we haven't been in a war since 1814.

Thats mainly because Sweden is not of any geographic importance in any war..
And because they were afraid of the Nazi's and didn't dare to get involved..

Or you could be saluting the stars and stripes whilst crying bald eagles soar overhead squaking the American national anthem, or shaving your head and wrapping yourself in the Union Jack before necking a pint of lager and going down the chippy to throw up in a cold kebab.

One is understandable, the other just looks silly.

I'm not patriotic in any way. Never saw any need to be.

Yeah I know what you mean, there's always some mouth-breathing Combat 18 thug who takes it to extremes. To be fair though, the vast majority of patriots are just people who love their country, at least in my experience.

i'm dutch, and i hate it, most of the people here are downright assholes. of course, there are some nice people too, but we as a nation accomplish shit in the world. The netherlands used to be the mose powerful country in the world in a distant history, but now this country has gone to crap and i'm thinking about moving to another country.

Yes, I am a patriot. But not a rabid one.
I am proud to be Norwegian, because of our history.
The vikings kicked some serious ass in the past!
And we have the most beautiful nature in the world!

No im not proud to be danish. Why would I be proud to be a nationality? It isn't like ive done anything to become a dane. I was born that way so it seems weird to be proud of it. Patriotism/national pride is not something I think very highly about. If people thought more about the world as a whole, instead of the little part of it that is their own nation, we would be much better of as a specie.

I am however happy that I was born in Denmark. Being in the happiest country of the world rocks!

Don't know what to say, proud of it? For arse kissing America at every oppertunity? Not so much. I don't need to be proud of it though, every country in the world has some screwed up problems... It's just 'there'.

Well, mostly I'm ashamed to admit that I'm from Denmark, It kinda sucks. I guess it's an okay place to live, but it's hardly any accomplishment to be born. So I can't be proud of that. And nowadays we are a nation of small minded, racist, petty bastards.

And in general I find it strange that people are proud to be from any country because of, say, Churchill or Vikings. It's not like we had anything to do with that. Taking pride in something you had nothing to do with strikes me as strange.
I could probably be proud of something in Danish history but what is the point? It wasn't me who saved the Danish Jews during the war. So good on the people who did it, but it says nothing of Denmark as a nation. Just as Shakespeare has little to do with people living today.

And don't even get me started on Greek and Italian nationalism and patriotism that takes credit for Rome and the Hellenic poleis. They had nothing to do with the modern national states.
