I can hope by 2014 most people that are into gaming of any kind will learn that making, maintaining and enjoying a gaming PC doesn't cost as much as they think. That's the only reason why PC games will start to outsell consoles in my opinion.

Cool story bro?

But, does it really matter? I mean, really does it?
Well, if games start to sell more on PC then on consoles, then we might start to see more game actually made for PC and less shitty console ports. I swear the majority of multiplatform games now are just ported to PC with the bare-minimum needed to pass as a PC game (mouse, keyboard, configurable settings, console), if that.
Eh, you'll have to forgive me. Im not big on PC gaming so I could care less what gets on the PC.

Which isnt meant to be insulting in any way, just crappy ports arent a thorn in my side (one of the reasons I prefer to game on consoles rather then a PC).
Understandable. I have nothing against consoles (own 6 of them, +3 more handhelds), but I prefer shooters and to play them on PC. I could even accept getting games later to have them made decently to take full advantage of the advanced hardware we have compared to consoles. I'm really just sick of having to pay licensing fees that don't exist (the extra $10 that console games cost) for games that are lower in quality. I really don't think any system should be shafted in any way other than the hardware not being able to support the game (Wii, handhelds, possibly Mac).

I feel ya. I like some games on the pc, mostly point and click but also the occasional F2P MMO where I can jump on with some friends and screw around. But mostly I just like the feel of a controller despite how (in)accurate people say it is and how much of a superior advantage of a pc gives you.

then again Im one of those people that likes to lie back against a pillow on my bed and just relax when I play games, rather then sit over a keyboard and mouse.

but thats getting off topic I suppose.

So people with the one they're pitting against the other feel special and can try and justify it. In the end, it doesn't matter whether console beats PC or vise versa. Decent video games these days are far and few between.
Way to be a negative Nancy there, guy. Are you one of those gamers who can never be pleased?

The misinformation and ignorant misconceptions in this thread disgust me.

Without going into much detail, suffice to say that the original post isn't about what's "BETTER" or the "RIGHT" choice, but simply states that PC gaming had a market, has had a market (despite everything), and will continue to have a market, and for some of us, that's good, reassuring news.

PC gaming is more accessible than most people want to admit, with netbooks playing plenty of incredible games...Freeware, open source games, or low-priced titles from digital distribution can all run on pretty much any laptop...

And I got a laptop that plays games fine for roughly 400 dollars, and it even has a dedicated graphics card. No, things don't look as pretty as they do on my desktop, but guess what - 1366x768 resolution is higher quality than the 720p that you'd get on a console assuming you have a decent TV.

And no one said new consoles won't be released again...It's just that consoles have always had more technical limitations than PCs, because once a console is out, it's out. The parts don't change, and over 6 years like we're at right now, obviously the PC will be faster and stronger than a console. And when a new console hits, even if it's on par with the desktops of the year it came out, it will end up being obsolete as new equipment is released. That's a fact. Does it affect the quality of the game? No. Just saying.

Anyway, the point is, YOU PEOPLE SHOULD BE HAPPY THAT PC GAMES ARE SELLING. Even if you're not a PC gamer. Everything that happens in this industry happens on the PC first. We wouldn't even have a 3D accelerator, an "indie" scene, online gaming, deathmatch, FPS, RTS, if there weren't PCs in gaming. And to those of you who said "the time has come, they have risen and need to fall in place of a Tablet/Smartphone" here's a question for you - how are you going to play Deus Ex on a tablet? How are you going to play WoW on a tablet? Any game that requires semi-complex controls will need a totally different interface. Until then, appreciate your mouse and keyboard.

Nvidia do seem to be back on track with the 500 series after some years in the wilderness while ATI spanked them soundly. I think they may be worried about the future incarnations of Bulldozer and Sandy Bridge though.
I doubt they're worried about 'Dozer as very few Dozer units will be Fusion APUs (CPUs with on-die GPU) and as for SB/IB... well, nVidia did sign a massive graphic tech licencing deal with Intel earlier this year.

Nvidia is a damn liar. Xbox is definitely more powerful than the most powerful gaming pc. Here is the internet proof!

No, because I'm not a gamer anymore. Yeah, I still play the odd game if I like it....but I just grew out of the constant amount of games which only differ from another by aesthetics and story/universe. Perfect example, God of War. It was fun. I loved 3. Then I played Force Unleashed and stopped after an hour. And then continued an hour later when I realised I had some free time to kill. Of GTA series. I loved those games. Then I played Saints Row and was all "Wow. It's similar to GTA. Only much more glitchier. Man, this game can...HOLY SHIT! I can dress awesomely!"

As long as there is Blizzard, there will be PC gaming.

I doubt anything more needs to be said really. Blizzard are migrating to Consoles - does the PC have any developer loyalty left at all? I mean, outside maybe Zynga?

Yeah, Blizzard's TOTALLY abandoning the PC.
I would say its more like they are just milking all their gullible fans for as much money as possible. Nothing like releasing the same game 3 times and everyone buying it just to upgrade.

I'm okay with this.

I mean, come on. WoW still has a huge standing lead on the MMO market. Blizzard doesn't make non-PC games. Valve sells huge amounts of their games on PC, and STEAM? It just recently got on PS3 and has a much larger catalog on PC, plus, just went on Mac about a year or so ago. Not only that, but Minecraft, Team Fortress 2 is FTP online, plus with the rise of Facebook games and casual games being very web-browser dominant, we might see a resurgence of PC gaming. It's entirely possible.

Yes, consoles have been around for a while and have dominated the market foreverandaday, but with phone and tablet games becoming a huge market, they're being dragged down a bit. But, people will always want computers. That's the thing about PCs. People will always use them. If they want a custom machine that does everything they want it to, that's it.

So, I say bring it on! I wouldn't mind watching PC gaming become a thing of the future. Again.

wow a whole lot of people completly misunderstood this article and ran with the same old PC vrs console war bullshit.

the whole topic was about game sales and how Nvidia is predicting that PC sales will be greater than Console by 2014. nowhere were they saying that console will not have new games or lesser quality games. take a chill pill console players!

This is most likely because the ability of laptops are starting to get in range of mid range desktop PC in gaming abilities and prices of those same laptops are dropping. you no longer need to shell out $2k to get a gaming capable laptop. this is direct competition to smartphones and tablets and quality of low-mid range increases that drive down the costs. There is also windows 8 having a new interface that supposedly makes it much more simple to use for those who are not tech savvy. Those reasons and theres console players that will get a laptop for whatever uses such as school or work rather than a desktop may start using it for gaming.

This is not a bad thing for console players simply because game companies will start inovating with having the extra horsepower before the next generation of consoles comes out. Thats a good thing because when the next gen arrives they can implement these inovations much faster since they should already have a better idea of what works and what doesnt.

ok, so i play games on my 360 and pc, lets figure this out.

recently, the games ive bought on pc far outnumber the 360, ive bought trackmania 2, magic the gathering and im playing many free mmo's and such. i am also about to buy alpha protocol, the total war mega pack and the company of hero's pack.

on the 360, ive paid off battlefield 3 and the new assassins creed, both special editions.

ive paid about $70 in the past month for pc games and about $250 for 2 360 games. this is why more people buy more pc games than xbox games (particularly in australia). even the digital distribution is far superior on the pc, so i randomly had a look at the games for download over live, Oblivion would cost me $50AUD while on steam its $20USD, $25 with all the trimmings and its the pc version so it supports mods.

so yes, console devs created better support for indie devs (australians cant even get onto the indie side of the 360) such as making licenses easier to obtain so they can sell their games (to everyone), cheaper and perhaps have more than 1 game a week on sale, it would put them in competition with pc again.

They're assuming that integrated graphics will catch up to consoles but the flaw in their reasoning is that there will be no new consoles released between now and 2014.

Consoles are popular because people want to just buy a game and play it. The vast majority of console players will not tolerate spending hours fiddling around with a game to get it to work.

I love PCs and PC games, but I'm realistic enough to know that the vast majority of potential game customers will not do what I do to get things working.

Again with this....

When will people workout that PC gaming has a cycle due to console releases. When new consoles are launched the PC starts getting obituaries written about it. Then as the consoles of that generation start too get long in the tooth there is more interest in PC gaming again, until the next gen console launches and the cycle starts over again.

Been PC gaming since 89 and I have watched this cycle happen 3 or 4 times now. The only difference this time, is that the cycle has been a lot longer, as this gen of console has been with us for a long time.

Also that due to the success of this console generation in getting more people into gaming and generating record sales figures the the lack of interest in PC gaming has sunk lower than usual. This has meant that the PC has not been able to show off the advantages it does have as a platform over console gaming, due to lack of developer interest and the glut of DX 9 ports. All people have had with the PC is the negatives of the platform vs console gaming.

Hopefully if the sale figures released are true, the upswing in interest in PC gaming (again that happens with every cycle), is starting again and devs will take notice and start making some killer games for the PC. Which will only make it even more attractive. Again.

The only unknown is how big an effect the tablet and smartphone platforms will have. Also I am not quite sure about the beating consoles part. That would be new for any cycle. The PC has been on a par with other platforms, I am not sure about when it has beat consoles in the past.

Hopefully devs will get it through their heads this time around, that this is a cycle and when new consoles come out won't abandon the platform completely again....

Just please don't forget us console gamers if this time comes. I like playing games, but I don't like playing them on the PC. I prefer consoles.
there will always be a place for consoles, hell why do you think Arcade halls used to be so popular?
Console is like your own arcade at home, it is easy to play games.

What I find annoying with consoles is that you can not "mod" things without getting away with it.
To me after I finished a cool game, I always end up modding it where possible or cheat it (to use old terms :p) Plus I can choose my own OS (curse you Windows with your damanble blue screen)

which reminds me I am still looking for software so I can run PS3 games on my computer -.- which also is able to recongize the Ps3 controller.

I personally wish that the future contains one MASTER platform, where it can do anything and everything, everyone has one, and the console wars, console vs PC, and all the other fanboy wars die.

People in this thread need to understand than nvidia is completely not interested in your private PC vs Console fan-war.

What they are interested in is plotting out the market so their shareholders invest in the right technology and they themselves know where to invest.

This already exists and is called a PC.
