And this is the exact reason I daren't buy any PC games that aren't, well, old. Besides the relativly low risk that they won't work, I can damn near guarantee I won't have to sign up for steam/etc, and there won't be too much DRM BS to go through.

Now don't get me wrong, I don't take offence to people who can be arsed with such stuff in order to play PC games, but at the same time, PC gamers need to recognise that not everyone wants to put such effort into playing games.

Yeah, console gaming isn't perfect, but neither is PC, or mobile, or handheld, everywhere you can, and everywhere you will be able to play games will have advantages and disadvantages, so the assumption that one platform is objectively better than another will always fall flat on it's face.

I don't consider it difficult to build and configure a PC that will run games without hassle, but some people do. I even enjoy tinkering, though in the last 10 years there's rarely anything that needs fixing, beyond speed upgrades.

Tired of it being my PC's fault the game doesn't work. Tired of my anti virus freezing up the game. Or having to re-install my sound card to get sound to work in Bioshock (which hasn't done it).

That's the meta-game of PC gaming. It gives even more value for money than the longest RPG, and much greater satisfaction than solving the hardest puzzle game.

Oh right it's 2012 we all do. So we have computers, and ideally they work... despite what some people seem to think it isn't some amazing step to go from there to playing games.

It isn't that expensive, it isn't that complicated, and drivers? Pfft. I update drivers maybe twice a year.

Major computer problems? maybe once every few years. But again, we all use computers anyway.


I really just don't understand console gaming as a 'thing.'



The only real joys I have ever gotten out of consoles were playing multi-player games with people in the same room... everything else just feels like it would be better with a mouse and keyboard.

Admittedly I have been playing pc games pretty regularly since DOS, but I am really no techie, I can just use the internet when I need to.

Not to mention that, with a little work, I can play just about any game ever made for any system with my pc... the PS3? Not so much D:<

Funny thing. I play on a PC despite knowing bugger all about PCs in general. And yet I rarely experience any of the troubles that other people describe.

Maybe that is the reason In my experience the most dangerous PC user is the one that THINKS they know what they are doing.

Can't say I've ever had anything like those sorts of problems. I've had to reinstall steam a couple times over the years, occasionally had to update drivers to get games to work *cough*RAGE*cough* but never to the point of reinstalling drivers, the bulk of games have just run fine. Except Saints Row 3, but I identified the cause of that problem being my computer crashing partway through the download.

Well, there are similar stories on both sides of the fence. In fact, when it comes to electronics I can find someone for every brand that says "I bought X different products from Y and every single one broke" and another person that says "I bought X from Y 100,000 years ago and it still works great!". Sounds like you just have some bad luck, or cheap B grade PC parts.

Honestly, Steam is pretty damn good.

I use it to download old games that I missed on my Piece o'shit labtop and I've not once had a problem with it. It's simple and easy to use. And it treats you like a lady.

This. Sometimes I even try to fix not-game-breaking bugs just because I'm interested in how to fix it.

But I can understand it would get frustrated if every other game wouldn't run at all. I have a fairly old PC, and out of the 7 games installed (not counting things like Limbo and Desktop Dungeons) 5 worked almost perfectly right after install, and one of those games is Skyrim, which gave pretty much everyone problems, while I only have some occasional glitch here and there. Guess I'm just lucky.

I used to be the same as OP, say I was a PC gamer and bash consoles. But then I got my hands on a 360 and it changed my views. Now if I was asked what I prefer I'd actually say console over PC.

The only time I will use my PC to game now is for TF2, CS, and other fancy RPG's like The Witcher. I don't play RTS or the DOTA clones so really anything that isn't competitive PC or an MMO I will purchase and play on my console. I find the experience more relaxed and enjoyable - I'm sorry I don't care how comfortable your computer chair is, you cannot beat a good ol' arm chair or sofa. I also find the CoD games more challenging and enjoyable on console. I don't know why, there's just something far more satisfying about running round a corner and killing 5 people on a pad than on the PC (this is coming from a vet PC-FPS PoV though) it almost feels more skilled...

But that's just me.

I don't fully understand why you would post this tantrum, as it really doesn't have much discussion value. I mean so what you had a bad day so your not going to PC game... fair enough, that is the only thing I see as a downside to PC gaming really is you have to work to have your games soo much better. I always find the effort of bug and such worth it for a more open controls, mods, graphics, community and just a better all round experience.

About seven years ago if you were to ask me if I was a PC gamer, I'd stand tall and arrogant waving a flag and say "yes" then go on to denounce console gaming for its inferiority and pretty much say anything else imaginable that would embarrass the crap out of me today. But over the years I've slowly and surely moved away from PC, starting around the time the PS3 dropped in price to something reasonable, and now I won't even buy "must buy only" games for the PC such as Skyrim and such.

I try to think back to why this has happened and today after spending eight hours pulling my hair trying to get games on steam to work I've realized why.

The truth is, I just can't take it anymore.

After five hours of trying to figure out what was going on and nearly deciding to reformat my PC (again for the 3rd time this month) I find out Steam has been down with certain clients and had decided not to let anyone know. I had to find out about this in some back alley of the google search engine after the 17 page. So, fuck you PC gaming. I have my Xbox 360, I have my PS3. SWTOR ended up sucking anyways no thanks to it being a rip off clone to an MMO that's over seven years old and shouldn't matter anymore. And since Diablo 3 isn't coming to any console, I say I care less to that too.

Here's the deal. I buy a console. I know that games will continue to be pumped out for it for quite some time. I know the online system will always be consistent. I know there is no DRM involved. I buy the game, and I play it, it's as simple as that. I don't even have to install it to the hard drive and waste a single second if I don't want to.

I know that there are no system requirements. I know that there are no "catches". I know that when I turn on my Xbox, at no point are my crucial work files on my computer hard ever at any sort of danger. I know that the 360 I bought 4 years ago will eventually get refreshed to a newer model, but I also know that I don't need to spend a penny to make newer games work because of it.

PC gaming has its plusses, but for many people, it's not an economic or long-term solution, and frankly, the attitude of PC gamers alone makes me not want to play.

Right, because you're not going to have ANY problems with your PS3. I mean, it's not like their networks are stupidly easy to breach even after a massive hack already.

And the red ring of death is purely urban myth.

And of course the games will work 100% perfectly 100% of the time. It's not like discs can get scratched, the players can get clogged with schmutz.

Dude. Sometimes people just want to plug in a machine to a screen, put in a game and have it... work. Whether you believe it for not, PC gamers aren't those people.

I stand adamantly by that PC gaming is a hobby that should - and often does - encompass all aspects of PC technology. A PC gamer should know the ins and outs of their machines, they should relish upgrading and building computers, they should be as good with the electronics as they are with the final output.

A lot of PC gamers aren't, and they're "PC gamers" because they want shinier games at higher resolutions with the comfort of mouse and keyboard control. And that's fine. But at the end of a day, a PC gamer really should love more than that. It should be a time-consuming, difficult hobby. There's a reason console gaming still exists despite PCs being built that are better than consoles on the market, and it's this very reason - PC gaming is hard. And giving up is no more a sign of defeat than it is just an indication that PC gaming isn't for you.

No reason to declare the whole hobby is dead, no reason to feel like you're being judged for it. You "quit" for an affable reason - it was hard. This does not make you stupid, and it doesn't make people who continue to stick with it morons. You just wanted to enjoy your leisure time and have it not be a chore. This is normal. This is why console games exist; they're easy, they're cheaper, and that's not a bad thing. I'm a PC gamer, and I absolutely agree. The elitism that comes with PC gaming is abysmal and I really don't understand. PC gaming and console gaming are two completely different sorts of hobbies, it really is oranges and apples; and yeah, sure, they both play games, but that should be no reason at all to compare the hobbies. They just attract too different a bunch of player bases.

An objective fact is that PCs are better than consoles, at least from a technical standpoint. They run more games, at better quality, at relatively cheaper prices than consoles do. This is indisputable. The bells and whistles - or the curses, if you'd rather look at it this way - is that it will not be an instant process.

As I mentioned, it is hard. And I think a lot of PC gamers take refuge in this - "I worked harder for a better machine than yours; this makes me better than you!" It's a disgusting attitude, whatever the reasoning behind it, and it needs to stop. PC and console gaming exist, they won't go away and mindlessly throwing shit at one another will never change the fact that this is our spare time we're talking about and you do what you enjoy most! I mean, really. I like that PC gaming can be a difficult beast. I like that it's often a struggle, because it makes it all the more beautiful when I've finally crafted myself a machine that can play all the games I enjoy flawlessly.

Some won't. It's more than understandable - it's just LOGICAL, that they would gravitate towards console gaming. Mind you, console gaming flings insults at people who have, say, picked the "wrong" console, so it's not to say that community is entirely doing itself a service in that regard. But console vs PC? Fuck. If you can't be bothered to understand why someone would pick one over the other, and vice versa, you're a fucking moron and you have no respect from me.
