they probably would if not for the bad PR
a very good friend of mine is vegan and he frequently complains about how, because of PETA, people think of him as a fanatic nutjob who wants to force his believes on everybody else
As a vegetarian, I get the same bullshit, especially on this forum.

Look, I have no love for PETA, but hell, I can't help but look at this and laugh, and hell, considering people are getting so upset over this, I can't help but feel that PETA succeeded in their mission.

PeTA are people who create campaigns like "Your mommy kills animals!", aimed towards children. And this is just an example. Seriously, anything they do needs to be crucified!

How you can think that's not hilarious is beyond me...

First off, there's no way plants can "feel" with a consciousness (or at least a shadow of one) like animals do, it's just not possible.
Again, look it up. The study involved tomato plants, two men, a machete, and a polygraph. I've only seen it in textbooks, though. It's amazing how little we still know of what constitutes "consciousness".

Secondly, plants are a "living thing" and I can't imagine that you're about to argue that beams of sunlight are "corpses of other living things"
Sunlight isn't all plants need to survive. They also need soil (or some sort of nutrient-laden water additive)... made of decomposed living things.

But don't worry, I'm not gonna start singing "The Circle of Life".
Do you have any idea how a polygraph works? It works based on variations in HEARTBEAT.

Seriously, HEARTBEAT. Think about that in the context of trying to use one on a plant.
actually, it's based on more than that... blood pressure, pulse, respiration, and skin conductivity.
Electrical impulses stemming from chemical reactions.

It can come from animal excrement (which, by the way, contains living cultures, and is made from other living things)... but generally, it's not just made from excrement.

okay, I'm done, this is waaay off topic now.

On topic: LOL PETA.

If my future child ever runs to me crying "YOU KILL POOR BUNNIES", I will definitely slap Newkirk. Several times.

So... I just though I should inform you all of something you should know.

Tofu is made with Calcium Sulfate... which is also known as Gypsum, or Plaster of Paris (remember that white powder you made models with as a little kid in school?) Once you add water, it quickly dries and becomes solid.

Yea. Knowing that REALLY put me off eating the stuff. Hope it does for you too (though by the sound of it, no-one was about to jump at the chance of eating it anyway)
Um.....food scientist here. Would like you to know that the amount of gypsium is quite low. And it provides a good source of calcium together with the protein. So stop scaremongering. Tofu is good and so is meat. What if i told you that Skittles and some fruits are coated with bug juice hmmm????

Stuff PETA (pun intended). Ill eat what i want.
Both points are very true.
Yes, I knew that skittles and smarties have food colourings that are made from crushed beetle carcasses. Did you know that all kinds of gummi sweets, marshmallows and everything containing geletin are not so healthy for you? Moreso than most think as geletin is basically crushed and boiled animal joints that's left to congeal and solidify :3

I know this shit too...

Fucking PETA...

Have they ever actually done anything other than embarrass themselves?
They've killed a lot of animals, firebombed some scientists and tried to shut down pounds.
Wait, killed animals? Isn't that one of the things they dislike?

Was it accidental?

Anyone else think this is just sad and petty? Also has anyone tried tofu? Vegetarians have some god damn tasty food so y eat something that tastes as bad as tofu
wait, have YOU tried tofu? tofu is by far my favorite food. it absorbs the flavor of whatever its cooked with, so it can pretty much taste like anything. is it the taste you have an issue with, or the consistency?

Yep i tried it in Ramen (Japanese soup noodles) made by pro chefs and so on. Came in about inch cubes and i didnt like anything about it, the texture or the taste, made me feel a bit ill tbh. Though if they absorb the flavour of the food ur cooking with maybe just had it with the wrong thing? IDK but i was very repulsed when i tried it.
yeah, what its cooked with is a huge part of the taste. ive never been crazy about how tofu tastes when cooked with soup. i generally think it tastes best when stir fried. i do agree that the texture takes some getting used to, though

No, they euthanize most of the animals they adopt.

It appears that plants do react to physical trauma (in the case of the classic study: Burning leaves) by changes in conductivity, but there is no evidence that this isn't just an autonomic chemical defense mechanism rather than any sort of consciousness.

Also, are you seriously arguing that excrement contains corpses and so plants must live off of consuming others just like everyone else. Come on, that is so far removed from the fact that it's ridiculous.

Two things that shouldn't even be argued:

1.) Eating an animal is worse than eating a plant
2.) PETA are fucking crazy.

No not colourings. Its the glaze. And again, everything in moderation. Gelatin is just collagen, everytime you eat say meat you are taking in collagen at the same time. Sure there can be weird stuff present thta come from the animals diet or whatever but thats an accepted risk and there are strict screening processes for it.

Im just saying, just because a certain ingredient is used in a totally different way which may or may not be related to consumables does not mean that its bad or unhealthy or will totally destroy your life if you eat it.

A study done by the Pacific Health Research Institute followed over 3000 Japanese men between 1965 and 1999, which showed a positive correlation between cerebral atrophy and consumption of tofu.[44] [source wikipedia[

SOOOOO, that information upthere, combined with the fact that tofu is made with an "edible" form of gypsum rock? ANND that its completly tasteless on its own?

yeeaaah no thanks peta. ill sit here and eat my delicious pogo's and burgers and BBQ'd ribs.

i say we all go buy a bucket of KFC, and hurled chicken chunks at these activists, whose with me??

So, I made this absolutely DELICIOUS tofu dish. It was like eating french bread covered in cream cheese and smothered in home made tomato sauce with cheese. It was FANTASTIC.

Bacon is still better. You lose even when you win, PETA.

I was just looking at my STeam update news...and I found this in the update for Super Meat Boy

"Added Tofu Boy, type in "Petaphile" at the character select screen. (He's sickly so he's weak and can't run or jump well.)"

Thats pretty hilarious. I's sure that PETA is going for a political message (And a less offensive one then usual PETA fare, since Super Meat Boy can't really be taken too seriously to begin with), but looks like the creators of SMB are having some fun with it.

You know, the funny thing is that PETA has killed more animals than everyone combined in this thread.

The following story is from This is True dated 17 July 2005. It is Copyright 2005 Randy Cassingham, all rights reserved, and reprinted here with permission [http://www.thisistrue.com/peta.html]:

After more than 100 dead dogs were dumped in a trash dumpster over four weeks, police in Ahoskie, N.C., kept an eye on the trash receptacle behind a supermarket. Sure enough, a van drove up and officers watched the occupants throw in heavy plastic bags. They detained the two people in the van and found 18 dead dogs in plastic bags in the dumpster, including puppies; 13 more dead dogs were still in the van. Police say the van is registered to the headquarters of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and the two occupants, Andrew B. Cook, 24, and Adria Joy Hinkle, 27, identified themselves as PETA employees. An autopsy performed on one of the dogs found it was healthy before it was killed. Police say PETA has been picking up the animals -- alive -- from North Carolina animal shelters, promising to find them good homes. Cook and Hinkle have been charged with 62 felony counts of animal cruelty. In response to the arrests PETA President Ingrid Newkirk said it's against the group's policy for employees to dump animals in the trash, but "that for some animals in North Carolina, there is no kinder option than euthanasia." (Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald) ...Oops, my mistake: that's "Playing God" Defined.
In his author's notes section, Cassingham had more to say about this story:
The more I learn about PETA, the less I think of them. The story of them killing animals isn't even unusual. According to PETA's own filings, in 2004 PETA killed 86.3 percent of the animals entrusted to its care -- a number that's rising, not falling. Meanwhile, the SPCA in PETA's home town (Norfolk, Va.) was able to find loving homes for 73 percent of the animals put in its care. A shortage of funds? Nope: last year PETA took in $29 million in tax-exempt donations. It simply has other priorities for the funds, like funding terrorism (yes, really). But don't take my word for it: I got my figures from http://www.PETAkillsAnimals.com [http://www.PETAkillsAnimals.com] -- and they have copies of PETA's state and federal filings to back it up. The bottom line: if you donate money to PETA because you think they care for and about animals, you need to think some more. PETA literally yells and screams about how others "kill animals" but this is how they operate? Pathetic.
And you know what I wonder? PETA's official count of animals they kill is 86.3 percent. But if they're going around picking up animals, killing them while they drive around and not even giving them a chance to be adopted, and then destroying the evidence by dumping the bodies in the trash, are those deaths being reported? My guess: no. While 86.3 percent is awful, the actual number is probably much, much higher. How dare they lecture anyone about the "ethical" treatment of animals!
