Literally every single time he does this.

It makes me cringe whenever I see a comment saying "Oh wow! Someone who actually admits his mistakes!" Since by now it's just a pattern he uses to hype up the next game without actually doing anything different.
Eh this kind of angry cynicism is also to be expected in every one of these threads and similarly makes me cringe. To make matters worse, half the time it's from people who didn't even buy the game in question.

Now I'll say that there were a lot of things in Fable 3 that said to me that this was not a finished product. As a for instance, development shots showed off some spectacular looking coin golf tables, but the final game had no pub games whatsoever.

Too much fiddling from microsoft I'll imagine when it came to kinect support and time constraints. How many games do they publish and yet they won't let one of their most prestigious studios develop a "when it's done" philosophy? I can't say Pete inspires confidence though with his spite for controllers are reliable HUDS, but at least if he gets his act together enough to ship a finished game it will attest that he learned something from this. And MS should really take their reputation into account over deadlines.
My cringing doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the quality of his games, just the fact that he repeats this tap dance so much that it's sad that it still works. His games could be pure gold, and I would still cringe over so many repeat performances of this statement.

The problem is, where do you draw the line between someone who honestly, earnestly, tries their best and fails and someone who really is just all hype, all the time?

If he were the PR machine many people (justifiably!) think of him as, I'd imagine he'd be quite pleased with the not-terrible reviews. His stance seems to be, "this was good, but we can do better!"

Whether you actually believe that's his aim or not, I will always wholeheartedly support someone who says that in the gaming industry; I think it is what more developers need to hear.
You draw the line around the sixth time he repeats it verbatim.
