I had never heard of him until he became number 1 pm YT and my mate said: "The new #1 YT guy is complete shit, how'd he get there?" and I went watched 3 videos to give an honest opinion. 2 LP(both horrible, couldn't watch all of it) and some sort of vlog where it was obvious he knows he's screaming and not being all that amusing, but knows there's a market for it(5-12 YOs).

That said well done for making what he does, by my esitamtes it should be more, but it's still a hell of a lot of currency.

I've always wondered why he's so popular. Is it the hair? The Nostalgia Critic screams 3 times as much and probably doesn't make half as much as pewd.
There are many factors really. Luck, YouTube's crappy way of promoting only the most popular people, and the fact that he's been traveling and doing quite a bit with charities. Now for me, I don't like PewDiePie's videos really at all, but in real life he's a really nice guy. Problem I see is, people can't seem to separate the persona from the actual person, leading some to judge him by his internet persona instead of his actual self.
Good to hear the money is going to some good causes. I may not like his work but I can honestly say, he's probably making better use of the money than I would have.

Edit: And in his draw my life thing, didn't he say he used to be poor as crap?
Things change. Since he's the most subscribed to YouTuber Polaris probably cut him the best deal when it comes to his contract. What sad is people are gonna use this and think that they can make that much money, when in reality they won't even make probably a single percent of that much.
I've made $5 from 4 years of youtube. Woooo!! All aboard the money train!
Oh yeah? Well, I've made 10 bucks in two years on YouTube... only because my mom gave me 10 bucks after finding out I barely make a single penny on YouTube... WOOO!!! #moneytrain

OT: Huh... I guess being bi(tri?)-lingual as well as first starting off in a country that's not America does pay off in the land of YouTube... Then again, even when you "crunch the numbers" and "add in all the factors", I still don't understand how YouTube works outside if it being like an economic bubble of popularity...

Other than that, the dude seems to be a pretty nice guy whenever I see him on the Fine Bros. channel...

Anyone who just simply thinks Pewds yells into a mic clearly isn't giving the guy enough credit. I'm happy for the guy for his success, even if his videos don't appeal for me. I just hope that everyone understands that Felix and Pewdiepie are two very different people, and I think it's safe to say that Felix is an absolute marketing genius due to how insanely strong a brand he has built up over the last few years.

Good for him, he's been doing the screaming thing for a long time so I'm sure he's become quite good at it. Excellent work "Pewds".

But I have a bit of suspicion for anyone who's earnings vastly outweigh their living expenses. For his work, which granted has it's rough hours and stress (it does, that is a /lot/ of editing/recording), I can't imagine he needs 4 million a year, because By The Beard of Brian Blessed that is an exorbitant amount of money. I just think that while he has earned it, it could be better used elsewhere.

Good on him. I like success stories like his even if I don't care much myself about the content he creates in particular. And its very decent of him to do so much for charity.

I detect a large amount of jealousy towards the fact that people claim "they can do that" but in reality can't. Felix has a personality of his own and he uses it VERY WELL. If he makes people smile (God forbid we have happiness in this world eh?) then good on him.

Personally I love the guy. His reactions are spot on, his remarks are really funny, and his adentures are always fun. He even reviews a lot of lower budget indie games and mods and has one of the best, down to earth, heartfelt connections to his fan. He adds an extra dimension and layer on top of "playing a videogame".

Honestly I think he deserves every penny he makes.

Here's an interesting watch if you're curious about some of the behind the scene stuff for part of why he's so successful. His videos and even location are perfect for leveraging YouTube's algorithm for how it promotes content. There's certainly talent at being able to deliver a product that people want, but there are some interesting details on top of that.

Well cool for him man. I already knew this all and stuff and got to say hes earned it. Hes been going at this for a while now and he is generally a cool dude. Don't really noticed much of the screaming thing everyone mentions though thats probably cause he doesn't play that many too scary games lately.

A little off topic, but am I the only one that feel that charity often comes across as a big sham? I was once told that in a major charity organization (don't recall which one), most of the money they collected went to administration and the marketing of the campaign.

OT: I watched PDP play a part of Conker's Bad Fur Day (The Great Mighty Poo, obviously). I myself stopped playing that game because the fart-jokes got old really fast, and it didn't look like they were going to stop. So watching the Poop-boss, with PDP overusing the word "fuck" just rubbed me the wrong way.

Still, not saying he's a bad person. Just not my cup of tea, maybe some of his other videos are better. There's too many for me to start caring.
Donating to charity gives you big tax cuts. I think that's why a lot of people do it.

I once tried to LP Mirror's Edge, but it just kept going wrong. I gave up after spending five hours on level 1, not including commentary. :p

I love exploding peoples' minds when I tell them that the best editing makes it look like there's been no editing.
Was the gameplay not turning out good, or were there technical problems. If it's the playing skill, I chalk that up to the Let's Play Curse. Basically you can be the best person at a game ever, but the moment you turn on that recording software, you suddenly play worse than a person who's never played a game before. For sudden bursts of good luck, see the elusive Let's Play Blessing.

As for commentary, for me I do live commentary because I hate doing post because I feel more rushed that I do when I'm doing live commentary. So in the current case for BioShock 2, I either have to a) rerecord again and lose out on using the footage in which I not only got the Grand Daddy Trophy, but the Master Protector one as well or b) do two hours of post commentary. T^T

As much 'hate' as the chap may get some times, I have seen him do some things for charity up to now, such as that charity clean water, and recently 'save the children' drive.

So no matter what he does on his screen time and how he gets his subscribers, if hes doing something 'good' whilst doing so with his 'bro' army, good on him in my opinion. Seeing as hes doing those charitys via his subscriber base, good on him then.

Edit: And for everyone saying 'charity gives off tax cuts etc etc'...I donno really, if I were in that position Id also give quite a bit to charity without looking at tax cuts or what not so Ill go along with my belief of 'hes a good person and wants to make others happy' mode.

I am not a subscriber to his channel and I have never watched one of his vids, however, congratulations to him on his success in a saturated industry.
Hes one of the lucky few who gets to work a job that he loves. I'm more envious of that than the 4mil he pulls in a year.

It was the Let's Play Curse. Sort of. In the case of Mirror's Edge, the problem is that I wanted to do a full run with no breaks and no deaths, and it's not so much that I was suddenly terrible at it as much as I kept missing my footing at key points during the 6-minute non-stop run.

Nothing like getting flipping off the helicopter, getting the vaults perfect, and shortening the run in every conceivable away only to suddenly accidentally on a simple jump and be left staring at where you wanted to go like an idiot before having to do the walk of shame to try again. :p

I wish I could be TheRPGMinx, who is constantly under the Let's Play Blessing. She had never played Erie before, and she beat it in one go (albeit screaming all the way). She had never beaten The Binding of Isaac before, but she beat it in her first session recording it, completely wrecking her plans of doing an extended series on it.

Also, I'm awful at solo live commentary. I'm too perfectionist. I have to do it all in post.

A guy makes money doing something he loves that you don't even have to watch? Oh perish the thought. We must eliminate this immediately and replace it and anything like it with so called "Intellectual" let's plays that do nothing but blandly explain the game.

I know he screams, but still, you don't have to fuckin' watch. I don't even watch the guy. Are people really still this petty as to believe that anything they don't like should be eliminated or prevented from making any money ever?

Eh. He seems pretty low on that list. At least to me. I mean, there are people out there who are making money by impoverishing other people. At least he's not taking food out of anyone's mouth.

Yeah he found his niche, jumped into the game at the right time, got lucky, Marketed himself perfectly and worked hard. That is how success tends to work. Good for him really he got his. He gets to be immortal in his own way in this world and never has to work another day in his life. He can do and be basically anything he wants at this point. The charity thing is something his accountant most likely told him to do. Don't get me wrong I'm sure he loves helping people but making that kind of money you will get destroyed in taxes if you don't give some of it away. He spun it into charity events and made himself even more loved, truly a great marketer.
