I think its clear on what my opinion on best Pokemon is. If it came to mass opinion however?

Well, if Pikachu is the OG mascot, here's the second favorite most people who experienced it in Gen 1 would reach for:

It's cool, it doesn't count as pokephilia when it's Gardevoir.

OT: As much as I love the originals, I've got to go with Swampert, my loyal first Pokemon whose descendants have fought in my team ever since 2003. A cool design and having ground as a secondary type is a nice twist on usual water type starter. Though Yanmega is a close second, mainly because my Speed Boost Focus Sash wielding Yanmega is a beast in battle and the bane of all those who forget bug type match-ups.

Oh thank god, that had me worried for the longest time.

I mean, that has nothing to do with any of this.

Ooh, a dragon. What a terrifying and original concept! And the ultimate evolution of the weakest starter pokemon. I hope it doesn't over-toast my breakfast muffins. (' O c O)
Pffft, I'll grant you that Squirtle is the best of the original starters, but you only pick Bulbasaur if you're a masochist who enjoys getting curbstomped repeatedly. :p

As for my nomination...

This fucker...for his ability to one-shot damn near any gen 1 (the greatest gen) pokemon you'll ever encounter.

I miss the days when PsyBeam was hilariously overpowered...you'll always be my hero, Kadabra that I named Neo. u.u

(Edit) Also, this seems like a good place to leave this:

Why because I adore fox pokemon, and dark type pokemon, and really fluffy cuddly looking pokemon? Is it because I make my best efforts to play all the games, that I like the newer ones better because they improve the mechanics, animations, graphics, and usually the story? I just... ;-; I'm gonna go cry into my Ninetales and Zoroark plushies now.

Doesn't count as Pokephilia since they're intelligent but that doesn't mean you can't take it too far.
Hey now let me be clear, that Gardevoir used attract as its own initiative and did not do anything it did not want to do.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go find a book explaining just how the hell all the humanoid pokemon are related to see just how close or far Gardevoir and humans are form the common ancestor.

Not very, as the theory goes all humans in pokemon are pokemon themselves. Also Arceus created everything and a lot has a common ancestor with Mew which came into being as the same time as Arceus.

Pokemon lore is confusing and makes no sense.

Though I think it's safe to assume the humanoid type pokemon have some common ancestry beyond "all where made this way". After all Abra/Kadabra/Alakazam are canonically a race of humans who had their psychic powers run out of hand. Speaking of psychics, early season pokemon was awesome in its absurdity, from Sabrina and her gym full of psychics and telekinetics to Lieutenant Serge being a monster of a man who could probably punchout most of the pokemon he comes across.

We all know that Serperior is best. Skraggy right after that.
Why? Both are always in my party in Pokemon White, and kick some mayor ass.

I much prefer Raichu. I can never keep Pikachu's unevolved, it seems like I'm not letting my boy reach his potential.

My all time favorite pokemon is Empoleon.

My favorite for the longest time used to be Mewtwo because he's just straight up awesome.

Recently I've discovered a new love

Togekiss is a badass, and he's a birdplane, you can't get better than a birdplane my friends

edit: apologies, I guess I have no idea how to actually get the image in my post, that's what I get for only lurking.

I always preferred the theory that all the information on Pokemon is wildly inaccurate nonsense made up by kids because it sounded cool.
