I've just realised this sounds far too much like a person advert, oh well, nevermind.Ringwraith said:Yeah, I'm new, meant to join the Escapist for a while but couldn't be bothered to get around to it, this pushed me into doing it.
Anyway, I have some FPS experience but I've never played a proper tactical game like this before online (in fact I haven't played much online, nearly all single-player experience). I am also a little (correction: huge) RPGer, so this game appeals to both of my needs. I have been interested in this game before, though it's a subscription-based thing so I resent it (I refuse to pay for anything), this might be a nudge to look into it.
Anyway, greetings all!
I would not recommend using Vista at all for this game, even if Sony says it will work. This is a DX8 game and Vista does not support DX8. An Example is, I can get upwards of 500-1000 fps in sanctuary with XP and get a max of 30-40 with Vista. Once you go into a large scale battle, Vista will struggle so much that your high end computer will be giving you 10-15 fps at most. I would HIGHLY recommend installing XP on a partition or however you choose to do it, if you want to play Planetside.[Spinwhiz said:For all of you that may be using VISTA http://forums.station.sony.com/ps/posts/list.m?topic_id=88000012599

Nonono, I'm sure the Escapist has thought of everything. We try to retreat, our PC explodesRingwraith said:Maybe, strength in numbers after all (human wave, Russians did it in WWII, though I doubt we'd get shot by own side if we retreated by an inch).
What I forgot to add was that if I find PS good I may be tempted to actually SUBSCRIBE(this a completely foreign concept to me, I hate having to pay for something constantly), though we'll see I suppose. Of course it would have run on this computer first... (it should do, runs UT04 at full).
I tend to agree with you. I'm going to test it on my comp this weekend and report but from what I've been told, Planetside doesn't run to well on Vista.BigDrockPS said:I would not recommend using Vista at all for this game, even if Sony says it will work. Not at all similar. There are certification points that you recieve to start and then get when you achieve new levels. These points can be put into any cert you choose, therefore making you more then just a medic or just an engy. You can cert both medical and engy and anything else you choose similtaniously, inturn making you more versitle then having to be just theteams medic. If you want to play a support character, then you are able to have things like advanced medic(rez), engy (several types of engy are avaliable), vehicles (AMS aka mobile spawn point), etc. If you want to be a grunt then you get heavy assault, anti vehicular weapons, special assault, and vehicles to compliment that style like several air vehicles or tanks, reinforced armor, and then also can carry basic or advanced adv engy or med to heal and repair yourself or others. Then of course there is a combination of all these, plus more things, to hybrid your style however you may choose.Ringwraith said:Yeah I suppose that is nice, nothing sucks more than getting stomped on by high-levels repeatedly, it mostly comes down to skill and tactics after all, so anyone can beat anyone else. Now if I manage to play it and enjoy it (though I'm probably quite likely to, enjoy it that is) I may be tempted into a subscription... or wait until they start the Reserves thing up again and join for a more lengthy period of time, so I can give it a fairer trial.
It also sounds a little little like BF1942 (haven't played any of the others except Vietnam) with soldiers, medics and engineers running around, though you're are given quite a lot of flexibility in what direction you want to go. Medics and engineers were always my favourite in BF, (medics so I solo creep into a base crawling with AI bots and heal up indefinitely, and engineers so I could go out on extended vehicle trips, particularly with my 'jeep of death' driving).
I know it wasn't a great comparison, but that's probably the closest game I've played to it, I knew what I meant when I typed it (my inherent problem, I knew what I meant, no-one else would), but I know about the cert system (ish, all wiki-based here), and how flexible it is to suit pretty much any playstyle, and BF also has capture points (though PS ones require hacking and have other features).BigDrockPS said:Not at all similar.
