I have no questions, I just wanted to say I've played before and it was a blast. Sniping is terrible, but everything else went smoothly. If I don't make the cut, I just want to wish the winners good luck, and have a happy killing spree.

(If I do make it I'd be willing to team up with everyone else who is an avid flier fan. Having a dedicated group of bombers and mossies teaming up is solid.)

---edit----
Baby Tea: Sorry for never registering before this contest. I usually stick to the shows this site hosts, but then I saw the pretty planetside ad. My cousin and I were chatting about how we missed PS just the other week. I came here for the game, but I'll probably stay for the forum community.

I love this game sooo much! I had to cancel my subscription back in the day, why I can't remember. I loved playing the stealth assassin, one of the guys with invisibility suit and the ocular implants. Just waiting for someone foolish enough to hack the tower console...

I Just thought this is free right? I mean are they going to make us pay for the time were playing?
Nope, completely free. All we I ask is that you are willing to put some time and effort in to help us become victorious!
Thats nice ^_^ even if i don't get a key i might just reactivate my old account and help the escapist crew out for the duration
Well, SOE has already looked into that. There is going to be a lock of 75 accounts on a special server for this WAR. If you have an account already and get chosen as one of the 70, let me know and I'll make sure SOE puts your account on the "safe list" to be able to get into the game.
ahh ok, guess that makes sense ^_^

Hope I get in. Love planetside, played all the time back in reserves. If they made this game free-to-play, I would be playing everyday.

Generic footsoldier/stormtrooper, right here.

if we lose to someone with boing in their name we should just quit life... Also, which factions are rps and bb using?

I imagine that BoingBoing is playing as the New Conglomerate while Rock, Paper, Shotgun is joining the fray as the Vanu Sovereignty. Worst case scenario is that it's the other way around. It just seems like the RPS guys would go for the faction with the alien tech.

Does that mean we can have special ops squads? If so I think that groups name should be "The Running Pitts". Dedicating all the times good old Russ had to run in the Escapist show.

What kind of squad names do you think we should call our groups in this fun competition?

EDIT

Out of curiosity, how much does this cost per month?
Running together on ventrillo and in the same squad can make a huge difference in this WAR. Regardless of whether or not I get selected, I will gladly host our guys on our ventrillo server. At the very least I can help give support and help people learn how to play.

If one of the escapist guys want to contant me at [email protected], I will be glad to offer what I can!

I'm the outfit leader for the Planetside Terran Republic (TR) division of this crew of guys. We are a well known TR outfit that's been playing the game since release.

Thanks Ralackk!
double thanks! however I have one remaining question for you spin. I have about half of those requirements and the other half I have no idea where to look, if I should enter and win and then it turns out I only have DirectX 8.0 or something and am unable to play would I be able to renounce the key and badge or would I just end up getting banned and hated for taking up one of the slots.

Planetside will work on just about any decent computer today, and even Vista with a few tweaks. They have a lot of helpful info here: http://forums.station.sony.com/ps/forums/show.m?forum_id=8

I haven't played this game for years. The pistol became more overpowered than the pistol in Halo 1 and the patches just kept on screwing up the balance more and more. However, I've been waiting for an awesome successor, which has yet to come.

Count me in.

Um, I downloaded the client and have been having some trouble doing anything. At all. I can't load the training map. I get a crash to desktop error every time it gets to "Loading VS" whatever. So if I can't get it fixed by Monday and you give me a key, what should I do?

Seeing all the adverts for planetside has got me all excited. I had a reserves account a while back and the time I did play for was bloody fun. It's definitely a unique game. Ahh nostalgia, I'm downloading the 14 day free trial now.

Greetings from TRG!

I'm here along with Sardus in hopes of participating in your event.

PlanetSide is a game that was released in May of 2003 so its nearing its 6th year now. The battles weren't 300/300/300 but more like 150/150/150, but still, thats quite a huge battle considering most FPS games can only hope to achieve 64 players max.

It's believed that PlanetSide was an experiment by Sony and so wasn't supported nearly as much as games like Everquest. Most people have never heard of PlanetSide because it was poorly advertised/promoted when it came out. Furthermore when the game was released there were a lot of bugs and every patch that would fix a bug would break something else. Unfortunately there are still some bugs in the game and PlanetSide still crashes for no apparent reason from time to time.

One solution I have for those that are having issues with PlanetSide crashing while launching the game is to run the game under an older operating system compatability mode. For example, I use vista so in order for the game to run on my system I have to run the PlanetSide shortcut in Windows XP mode and the planetside.exe itself (in the Sony folder) in Windows 98/ME mode.

PlanetSide uses client side hit detection, which means you might think you made it around a corner just in time to escape getting killed but on the shooters screen you might still be there for another second allowing them to get in that final blow that takes you down. In an FPS every second counts so at times this can be frustrating.

Another point is that you only have one hit box. In order to make it possible to have so many players fighting at the same time the game was designed so that you would take the same damage from a particular weapon whether you get hit in the foot or in the head.

I've always said that I've never had as much fun playing a game as I have in PlanetSide, these days with how small the playerbase is it isn't as epic feeling as it was at release. There used to be 20+ tank columns forming up with Galaxy ships (15 man air carriers) landing to pick up troops. I still come back to this game because there really isn't anything out there like it and probably won't be for some time because developers are currently fixated on making WoW clones (dull small scale grind games where you get to kill predictable mobs).

Just to give you a sample of what PlanetSide is capable of here is a video made by our own TRG leader Sardus made some years ago. Enjoy!

is there a specific deadline to this or do we just have to put our registration in before Monday? I still need some time to consider whether or not I want to risk getting banned for not having the system requirements (I know they're on page two I just cant find half of them on my comp so don't tell me).

Slow down, 2003? I thought this was some new version called PlanetSide WAR, in retrospect that seemed a bit foolish on my part. Well now I'm registering for sure (65/some thousands isn't as bad as some contest odds).

Oh and good luck to you and the people on your site.

EDIT: sorry for double post.

If you are looking to find the system requirements go to start > run. Then type dxdiag and enter. It will tell you everything you need to know about your computer.

As an alternative you can go to http://www.systemrequirementslab.com and select PlanetSide from the drop down list. It will probably prompt you to install an active x control and after that it will automatically evaluate your machine and tell you where you might be falling short for both the minimum and recommended requirements.
