Well the slim is slimer. You can see where the improvments are.

But seriously, get a slim. I never trust used things and even though you pretteymuch have to purposley damage the ps3 to hurt it, I still wouldnt get used. But thats just me. I recomend slim. Poll?

I'd go with new one, used games are fine but I want a garrenty (spelling?) that my system will work.

The Slim has a larger HDD, and im guessing it has been improved on other small things from the original.

I have the normal 80gb one, it works great.
"guarantee" Also If you have the money i'd go slim. Its better then getting a classic and hving to pay for a new HDD to upgrade.

If you find a cheaper older one (significantly cheaper) then go for it, its the same console, and unlike the xbox it isn't likely to die on you, so don't worry about that
Don't be so sure. The old lasers have a lifetime of approx. 2 years...
Had to replace mine earlier this year.
I say buy a new one.

From what I've heard, 'improved' means stripped, no more linux, and no backs compat.

Of course, who uses linux on console? And to be honest, I know of very few people (no one) who actually use the backwards compat, but it still bugg me know that 'I can't'.
Well even if you get a normal one it still wont have backwards compatability FUCK YOU SONY I HATE THAT DAMNIT, um sorry about that, i just really want my SSX 3.

But yeah, unless you look on Ebay your not going to find a backwards compatability PS3.

i'd buy a new one, i just dont trust something other people have used (other people are always so dirty and stupid). but i will also say that the slim is the ugliest console ever built. i love my shiny black monolith of a ps3, but that slim looks like a horrible cheap mutation

PS3 slim 120GB hardrive FTW
That's fucking tiny. My PC has a 500Gb HDD and another 320Gb one. Oh I'm sorry, PC gamers aren't allowed to 1up console gamers or they get flamed here.

On topic: There isn't going to be much of a difference so honestly just buy the one that's cheaper.

It's good Sony is actually dropping the price of the black death machine they've been selling, but since I'm a PC gamer I don't really care that much about it. It just means Sony is going to get all the people who hate Microsoft for their unreliable white thing that can't stop having heart attacks, because they can finally afford a PS3.

Edit: WINDOWS 7! MICROSOFT ACTUALLY DID SOMETHING RIGHT SINCE VISTA AND THE 360! It is awesome, I'm using it right now.

I didn't buy one because of lack of backward compatability. I got a new PS2 (old one broke) and a few 360 games for my money instead.

Wanna cookie?

I'm still a sony fanboy, I just think they royally screwed themselves with the slim. Personally, I think everyone that wants to play PS2 games, and wants a PS3, should just look on e-Bay, cause surely theres a few for sell. Maybe even check some local stores, my local game store still has a launch 60gig collecting dust.

So you represent the 3% (exaggerating its more like 13%) of people who actually have hardware problems, you are one of the unfortunate but still... I stand by what I wrote, I would either buy the Slim or if I found a significantly cheaper one, get that instead.

You know, it takes about a few seconds to put another hard drive in, and 300gigs only costs 50$. So, getting the slim just for that is, well, dumb.

I suggest looking around for one of the orginal luanch consoles, why? Backwards compatablity, even if you don't have any PS2 games, you might want some later on.

EDIT:

This may be a stupid question but:

Is the PS3's online wireless or do you need a wire? We have wireless internet at my house and the router is in the living room so it'd be kind of akward if I needed a wire.

Well, the orginal 20gigs do not have the built-in wireless, so if your not wanting a wired one, avoid that kind.
So only the slim has wireless?

Get a new one. Since it does have internet access you have no idea if the console has viruses and such.
Never in my life have I heard of a console virus. Am I missing something here?
You're not, as long as you buy it from some place reputable a used one is fine. I'd still go with the slim though just for the larger HDD.

So in about a month I will buy a PS3. Now I have no experience with consoles so I will ask those more enlightened than I am: Should I get a new one or buy a used one? Also should I go for the classic or the Slim? I have played on a classic a few times and I love it but is the Slim any good?
Neither. Get a 360. It doesn't cost an arm, leg, and you immortal soul.
Since when does buying a Microsoft product *not* cost your soul? But then again your soul is a price for Sony and Nintendo as well so it's a lose-lose-lose-lose situation.

I bought a second hand classic one. Works fine but only has 40gb hard drive. I knew this buying it and will probably upgrade it when needed. I think you're best going a new slim one. You might not save that much buying second hand now. It'll also have a warranty new. Also the slims are meant to be quieter and such.

Biggest question is whether you want backwards compatibility or not. If you want to play your old PS2 games on it, I recommend going used. Otherwise, it's up to you for however much you wanna spend.

Yeah I'd like to know that as well
Console viruses are extremely rare (like almost none existent). There really is no difference between a slim and a classic other than size. The thing with getting a classic however is sometimes you get backwards compatibility (if you buy a used one and get lucky). I'd personally just get the cheapest one, then buy a hard drive separately so you can give your system a huge capacity boost.

Er no, actually all PS3's (not sure about the 20GBs now but I'll check) have wireless capabilities. They also have ethernet ports should you want to go for the wired approach.

PS3 Slim is just as expensive as an Xbox 360.

I'd buy new, unless you can get your hands on one with backwards compatibly. But if a used game has the booklet, I heard that the blue ray doesn't deteriorate, of course: check the disk for scratches
