Check out the specs for every model, then choose from that which one you want. Some older models have different features among them, and I think the Slim only has one model type.

So in about a month I will buy a PS3. Now I have no experience with consoles so I will ask those more enlightened than I am: Should I get a new one or buy a used one? Also should I go for the classic or the Slim? I have played on a classic a few times and I love it but is the Slim any good?
Neither. Get a 360. It doesn't cost an arm, leg, and you immortal soul.
*Facepalm* because less than a hundred more than a 360 is an arm, leg, and your immortal soul.

If you can find an old one in good condition, get that. Preferably get a 60 gig, they are the best of any of the ps3's released, including the slim.

Unless you want to spend a bundle on a 60G you may as well just get the slim. A Bestbuy in my area already had two on shelves labeled "mis-shipped" Seriously they got bigger hard drives and are more energy efficient so you'll save more long term on the electrical bill.
edit: alright if you really want backwards compatibility it'll have either have an 80G or 60G also the 60G has four USB ports and memory card readers under a flip-top semitransparent lid thing.

Or he could get the console he wants, which is ironically cheaper than 360 now, when you account for the fact that you have to pay an extra $100 for wi-fi.

Wait a minute are you saying the cheapy little plug-in WI-FI antenna costs one hundred dollars? I gotta look this up that is too much if that's what it costs.

Yeah it's $100 for the wi-fi antenna, I've yet to find it cheaper anywhere.

Why is everything considering backwards compatability? Didn't Sony announce that they are ADDING THE SOFTWARE IN AN UPDATE TO BRING BACK BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY FOR CONSOLES MISSING IT!?

And I say unless you can get it fairly cheap, get the slim. Not because its new, but your getting the most bang for your buck. But that's coming from a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy with a pawn shop that'll pass down extra consoles to him. Just by waiting for them to come in, through him I can get roughly any console for around $100 (Stuff worth less for free-$20). The only problem is that they will be used, which isn't one for a PS3.

FINAL VERDICT: A USED PS3 (AROUND $280-300) OR A SLIM.

@ HG131: You are quite stupid sir (no offense). A Slim costs $300 flat. Most 360s run more than that. A PS3 doesn't cost a arm or soul anymore, but I still think you lose that leg getting ANY new console on this economy...

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7457432&type=product&id=1126591945477 You win here it is and it looks like garbage that cost Microsoft no more than a dollar to make. Now to make the PS3 look even betterer you've got free online multiplayer and Blu-Ray so if you ever pick up a high end TV you'll already be set-up for it and it's more reliable no red rings or equivelant.

Get used, if possible something with backwards compatibility, will easily make up for the shortage of ps3 games if you can play ps2 games (which you presumably missed if you've not done the console thing before).

I just wish they hadn't cut the backwards compatibilty, oh well. At least I can download PS1 games.

Get a new one. Since it does have internet access you have no idea if the console has viruses and such.
I'm yet to find those even exist.
People make viruses for the Mac, linux and PC OS's, not PS3, or 360 :S

Well, many sites announced that Sony had patented software that emulates the PS2 engine via Cell, however, the most recent news from Sony is that BC is gone for good. Whether people believe that or not...meh, I dunno, then again, I have a BC model, so I could care less...it's only important to the folks who figured it'd be wise to wait and opt-in 3 years after launch.
This will be no different to them telling us they couldn't bundle the motion controller with the PS3 and then turning around a year later and doing it.
Sony are cold-hearted f**cking liars. Always believe the opposite of what they say.
Hey! i've gone Gonzo, wooo

Heh, me too (Gonzo), honestly though, I have a feeling Sony may just be keeping the patent anouncement to themselves, for a later date. Maybe TGS or something closer to Xmas to really ignite sales hype.
Rgardless, if they do come out with returned BC, I want to be able to say I fucking called it!

I'm a fan of the old-model PS3s that can play PS2 games. Note that there are two different forms of backward compatibility - hardware and software. I managed to get a used PS3 last December that has the PS2 hardware built in.

I would say the console virii potential with a used system is negligible, as long as the system has been reformatted since the previous owner (there's a tool in the PS3 menu for this, as I inadvertently learned to my chagrin when trying to format an external drive).

It is easy to swap HDs on the PS3 (the Escapist had a video on this recently), so you don't really need to worry about how much hard drive space there is on the one you get if you're prepared to switch HDs later.

If you get a used system from a store, you can usually get some form of short-term warranty so you can at least see if the system works.

Personally, I wouldn't trust the PS3 slim for a while. That is because I had a regular PS2 and a PS2 slim, and one day the PS2 slim wiped out all the data on one of my memory cards while I was playing Jak X Combat Racing. Internet research explained that PS2 slims could at times wipe memory cards, something to do with overheating if I recall correctly.

One other note - the PS3 is handy for organizing PS2 memory card data, if you get the memory card converter. Even if I didn't have backward compatibility I would probably use it to organize my save files.

If you want backwards compatibility, you'll need to buy an old model, I think only the 40 and 60 GB versions had BC. If you don't need BC, then go with the slim, its lighter, faster, and (maybe) cheaper.

PS3 slim 120GB hardrive FTW
That's fucking tiny. My PC has a 500Gb HDD and another 320Gb one. Oh I'm sorry, PC gamers aren't allowed to 1up console gamers or they get flamed here.

On topic: There isn't going to be much of a difference so honestly just buy the one that's cheaper.

It's good Sony is actually dropping the price of the black death machine they've been selling, but since I'm a PC gamer I don't really care that much about it. It just means Sony is going to get all the people who hate Microsoft for their unreliable white thing that can't stop having heart attacks, because they can finally afford a PS3.

Edit: WINDOWS 7! MICROSOFT ACTUALLY DID SOMETHING RIGHT SINCE VISTA AND THE 360! It is awesome, I'm using it right now.
How the hell did you make a format war out of this the 120Gb is in refrence to the PS3 hadware models of which 80GB was the largest but most people probably had a 40GB version.
My own PC is over 1TB (500x2 RAID 0 + old 160Gb)

Actually the Ps3 isn't that expensive compared to the good version of the 360. there is the xbox arcade, but all that is good for is bashing it against ones head.

To iggyus: I think you should look for some special-offer ps3, before desiding. I bought my Ps3 as a special offer with 2 blue-ray movies (although they weren't really good) and 2 games. And the price was better than a buddys 360 elite. Off course if you fon't find any special offers then I recomend a used, as long as you find one that's backwards compatable.

You know, it takes about a few seconds to put another hard drive in, and 300gigs only costs 50$. So, getting the slim just for that is, well, dumb.

I suggest looking around for one of the orginal luanch consoles, why? Backwards compatablity, even if you don't have any PS2 games, you might want some later on.

EDIT:
wouldyoukindly99 said:
This may be a stupid question but:

Is the PS3's online wireless or do you need a wire? We have wireless internet at my house and the router is in the living room so it'd be kind of akward if I needed a wire.

Well, the orginal 20gigs do not have the built-in wireless, so if your not wanting a wired one, avoid that kind.
So only the slim has wireless?
No, the original 20gig is the only one that doesn't
