Vampires were done well in Dracula, Bram Stoker's novel.

And Blade. The original one.

Before Dracula there was Nosferatu. I support this character

INCORRECT.

dracula the BOOK came first, never the actual guy. (the wasn't a camp)
I like to add that the first movie about dracula was made in 1920 in Russia but no copies have survived and then there was another made in 1921 in Hungary and then there was NOSFERATU

I've never understood why vampires (and werewolves, for that matter) have to be all angsty and shit. Seriously, what is there to angst about?

Vampire: Oh noooooo! I have superhuman strength, preternatural senses, unholy stamina, excellent stealth skills and am now impossibly attractive to the opposite sex. Woe is meeeeeeeeee!!!!!

That's like being a rich kid and angsting over being rich.
Vampire: "Oh no! I have to watch everyone I know die slowly around me, and eventually everyone in society will have the same skin colour, and I won't fit in any more, and they'll become so advanced that they'll probably know what I am and slowly start to hunt me and my people down... (etc etc)" honestly I think they have a lot to be angsty about.... just sayin.... >.>

OT- I don't like twilight either but I'm happy with the other shows that I watch that have perfectly good vampires in them, (and no I don't mean True Blood... although not to bad either)

You know the man it that picture was not a Vampire right?
Yes, yes I do. What I said was technically incorrect, but he IS Dracula, and he was the inspiration for the Bram Stoker story, although Bram's Dracula was far less vicious than Vlad. What I guess I was trying to say was that vampire stories should be more akin to the brutality of Vlad.

You know what.

At least Twilight decided it would put some creativity into the genre. Jesus christ, it wasn't good but to be honest vampires are over done as it is. I applaud Twilight for mixing it up once in a while if nothing else.

As we all know, Shadow Hearts has the best representations of vampires ever. No matter what you show me, they are not true vampires.

The Valentine Family. Those are true vampires. Whatever else is a rip off, and your stupid for saying such bullpuckey!

/end fan boy defense

OT: No one owns vampires. They can be interpreted in various ways. I only know that they suck blood and can;t stand sunlight. there is no definite "form" of a vampire. No matter what your girl friend says, they don't exist, so we can make them anything we want them to be.

And I don't understand all this hate on Twilight. Its not like people are forcing you to watch it. Even if they are, its not really that bad. Cheesy, I must at admit, but still okay.

Everything needs to be taken in strides. Too much of a good thing and all that. Vampires have been done to death in every possible way, and I agree that the entire mythical species needs to be destroyed from any further fiction.

Okay can we all just stop? Yes Twilight is awful and it ruined vampires for everyone but you don't need to make more fucking threads about something everyone besides the 12 year old fangirls are aware of.

I dont hate the Twilight Vampires per se. I hate the films, due to the terrible acting, bad casting, and altogether boring locations. I actually read the books before they became popular, and kinda enjoyed them, because it was easy to fix character flaws in my mind, and imagine characters and locations how I wanted to.

Everyone is saying Twilight ruined Vampires, but I havent seen anyone point out films after Twilight's release that use the shitty Twilight Vampires. I might have missed them.

Also, anyone considered new monsters? Vampires are getting pretty old

Agreed. The variety of vampires in this thread is making me despise them even more

Twilight didn't ruin Vampires, Twilight ruined itself. Then some imitators followed suite, and ruined their own franchise. Peel back the layer of bullshit, and you have about the same amount of cool Vampire lore as any other time. Let The Right One In, for example. Or for a more straightforward one, 30 Days of Night. World of Darkness always manages a compelling setting with a very broad and encompassing look at Vampire Lore, without getting stupid. And True Blood manages to include Werewolves, and a central Female character with competing love interests from across the supernatural spectrum, and still be violent, dark, politically intriguing, insightful, and generally just be everything that vampires are supposed to be. Vampires are fine. Twilight might as well be a different Genre entirely.
I believe this is the key, which is why I say "More Vampires!"

Twilight is essentially the teen's romantic novel for vicarious relationships of fantasy (batshit crazy fantasy relationships, mind you...), so until desperation find an even more appealing anchor, Twilight is not going out of existence sadly. However, if there was a spur of creative and evocotive vampires that were cast in a more traditional light, as in not sparkly, angst-ridden stalkers, then the vampires and werewolves even could be categorized into almost two separate beings of fiction by the masses. In this lovely scenario, at least the more traditional vampire model could exist in its own domain at the bookstore, while the Emo-vamps get to sulk in their own corner [sub]where they will most likely watch who goes into the bathroom or something. [/sub]

I would also say that Twilight's image of "vampires" alone is not the sole issue, but the overlying themes and messages that ignorant impressionable people take as gospel. Considering that a television show on ABC Family about a high school girl getting knocked up actually created a cult following of young girls trying to get pregnant at an absurdly young age, I can see as to why many view Twilight so negatively.

The thing is, vampires don't actually exist. No one owns the idea of a vampire, it is not under copyright, therefore, it can be changed and manipulated. I'm pretty sure the only ablility one needs to actually be classified as a vampire is that they drink blood. (I think.) If I recall, the vampires from Twilight do drink blood.

There are plenty of emo teenager books about demons, about angels, about monsters, about lots of things, including just normal, emo teenagers. I think that it is important to remember that most teenagers are total tools and over the top (This coming from a teenager.) and that is what those movies depict. Add that to the fact that you got to watch everyone you love die, that you steal life so that you can live your own, that you can only come out at night (In some cases) and I would be feeling pretty blue, too.

I digress. Just remember that vampires are not owned by anyone, therefore, they can be shaped differently from different author's imagenations.

By the way, one of the things I've learned on this site is to be tolerant of what other people like, no matter what it is, or how much I don't like it. (Things like being a racist/sexist, etc excluded) Why is it that things like Twilight, Justin Bieber, and other mainstream culture are given a free pass to slander, when those same people so readily defend their 'nerd' culture, and cry foul when someone insults their Silent Hills or their Portals for not being as entertaining as what they like. I've learned things like how I should never look twice at cross dressing, at feminine characteristics in guys, at bisexuality, etc, as anything except a choice that someone made to be who they are. Why are we giving people such a hard time who choose to be who they are by liking Twilight, or Justin Bieber, or anything else, just because we disagree with it? I'm not a Saint myself with these kinds of things, but I still feel sort of defensive when it comes to threads like this (No offense OP. This is just as much about other threads dissing mainstream culture as it is about this one) that complain about things they don't even need to be paying attention to.

I've seen how people here are proud of what they like. We should let other people be proud of liking Twilight/Bieber/other mainstream culture as well.

*deep breaths*
I agree completely!

Honestly, I can't believe how much people have reacted to this. What makes Twilight so much worse than all the other bad books? Oh yeah, its press. Well, I'll just clear up my opinion on all that:

Fact: There are people who like different things than you.
Fact: People who like different things than you will, in some cases, outnumber you.
Fact: Most people consume the things they like, regardless of your opinion or the quality of said things.

People who aren't you like Twilight. They like romantic vampire stories in general. They outnumber us people who don't. Those people buy Twilight, causing more romantic vampire things to be made. It's a stupid fad, and it will soon die down. In twenty years, do you think the kids will still be listening to Justin Beiber? Heck, will they even remember him? Already, the Jonas Brothers, once the Escapist laughingstock, are a distant memory. They fell, Justin Beiber will fall, and Twilight will one day fall as well. Perhaps one day, badass vampires will become more common.

Personally, I look forward to the day when the Escapist moves on from Twlight and finds something to bash, preferably something that actually deserves the punishment.

Please, Twipires resemble kryptonians more then actual vampires.

Besides, the real victims in Twilight are writing, characterization, plot, science, consistency, common sense and the basic concept of love.

I know I'm being harsh here, but I really feel Twilight is just badly written and does not deserve its popularity.

You my friend, need to try Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines. LME.
You know how vampires are usually dickheads (Dracula & blade) or massive pussies (twilight)
well in Vampire the masquerade (or requiem if your a tabletop nerd) you personality and temperament develops based on your actions and choices.
Plus, being able to run faster than a human eye can see, and punch with the force like a truck (BESERKER!) automatically makes you more badass than wesley snipes 1 dimensional character.
Also, MUTHAFUCKIN ALUCARD FROM HELLSING!

Twilight did not ruin vampires, as the book series that True Blood is based on came before it, and the Twilight author got a good amount of inspiration from it.

So don't blame Twilight, blame True Blood (or the books it's based on or whatever).
