Vampires were ruined to me way before Twilight, that was just another low blow is all. Here's how I view it, and its just personal opinion so no need to flame.
To me vampires got ruined because of Anne Rice.

This. Vampires were ruined a long time ago. Wes Craven's "Vampires" was decent as was "The Lost Boys". Although, I had problems with the chick and the kid in The Lost Boys but I allow movies some deviation from my view on it. I liked "From Dusk till Dawn" and "Queen of the Damned". (Anne Rice, I know but Lestat and the Queen went a long way in it. I didn't like the "Interview" series otherwise.) The reason I credit dusk till dawn is they didn't chump out the priest. I can't stand when they use Christian values to plant the story and then totally deviate from it.
To me, I see vampires as something you DON'T want to become. It is a form of possession and you are no longer who you were before the possession. You are dead, the body is possessed by something else like demons. All these stories coming out now means -you- aren't dead if you have humanity still. Using vampires as a way to explore the dark side of humanity is just retarded to me because as soon as you step outside of humanity you are no longer exploring it. To use that type of artistic expression behind a vampire setting is automatically invalid as you are exploring the subject matter which is vampirism.
I understand why culture has swayed to turning monsters into "misunderstood" creatures as that was the beauty of books like Frakenstein or The Hunchback of Notre Dame. (both of them struggled to fit in with human society) But to make every monster like that shows a total lack of creativity. Movies and books alike are taking beings originally meant to be embodiments of evil itself. Every book is now the hunchback and frankenstein but they aren't even making up new "monsters" or bringing in new ideas.
