Pokemon's newest game thing...Pokemon Legends Arceus has a new trailer that dropped today and first impressions are.....what the fuck dude? Look Pokemon is the biggest franchise on the planet and makes more money than God, somebody tell me why these games refuse to improve in anyway?

The trailer showcases a boring world with incredibly poor levels of detail. It showcases Pokemon attacking the player with terrible animations. And it just looks like a bland game to be honest. The worst thing about it, is that the trailer is designed to showcase the best parts of the game to excite people.

I wouldn't rag on the game so much if it was still stuck on the DS. But it is on the Switch now and a game from 2017 (BOTW) looks and animates way better than a big AAA pokemon release. Jesus fuck man, a little more effort please.

Pokemon is the JRPG version of Madden these days.

Oof. Some of those shots look like they came from a Wii Sports golf map.

So basically, all they've added a pseudo-stealth system, and implemented a Dark Souls roll? Even though apparently you can just battle them with your own pokemon as usual... I am very confused.

I wonder just how badly they'd have to fuck up for Pokemon fans to start getting tired of the franchise. Last year's CoD still sold really well, but well below how they usually perform. Has that happened yet for Pokemon? I know the Hawaiian one wasn't so well received. Or was it the European one...

Yet both still sold more than better. Sun and Moon made loads of money, and their sequels made even more. Sword and Shield never fell under porjected sales, despite vocal and loud complaints. It's the kids who are either new or played at least a few games, and the fans that keep falling for the same shit, that keeps the money train rolling.

Games like this back in the day, ones like the gamecube pokemon games like Lugia XD or whatever it was, had the reason for existing that they were on console so you got to see big pokemon on tv doing their attacks, which let them get away with widely inferior composition compared to the handheld games. Now that the switch is the platform for the main line games, these gimpy side games are kinda obsolete, a relic of a bygone era.

At least Hikari got a cute new outfit out of this.

It'll sell like hotcake anyway, they could sell an empty box with "pokemon" on it and it would be guarantee to sell at least 10 mils. Every trailers that dropped for this game made it look like it was a mid tier PS2 game and even then people would flock to defend it.

I'm 90% sure they started making the game with the idea of making fights action but realized they weren't good enough developer so they defaulted to regular turn based combat.

I remember playing a Warcraft 3 pokemon custom map that was more innovative and interesting than mainline pokemon entry.

They'll never change until a game bomb hard and that'll never happen.

I said this when the game first got announced, and it looks like nothing has changed, since: This has got to be one of the ugliest AAA games that I have ever seen.

Breath of the Wild looks miles better, and that game is 5 years old, and was made for the Wii U. Hell, Genshin Impact looks better, running on a phone.

And sure, graphics aren't everything (I spend most of my time endlessly replaying 10-20 year old Halo games), and I haven't really paid much attention to the gameplay, because I really do not care about Pokemon, but if the graphics are anything to go by, the millions of people who buy this game just because of brand recognition, are in for a rough time.

Pokémon peaked with Pokémon Snap in '99. Everything since then has just been a Marvel TV show; side stories and F-tier characters. Now I heard they made a proper sequel to the actual Pokémon game, and that might be worth a look. But this running around in an open field fighting singular Pokémon is just undignified next to the Sir David Attenborough Planet Earth special that is seeing multiple Pokémon interacting with one another in Pokémon Snap.

Honestly, I've seen early and mid tier PS2 games look better than Arceus. Hell, their are late PS2 and early Wii games that look better than Arceus.

You’d think they learned something from the success of BOTW.

And I’m not talking just about graphics; BOTW probably re-defined what it means to be an open-world/ a Zelda game, and simply not rehashing the same concept with a new coat of paint (I’m looking at you, Ubisoft games!).

When I saw Arceus reveal, i thought “Holy shit, could this be a Pokemon open-world game with BOTW engine?!” I was expecting it would re-define what it means to be a Pokémon game.

This is probably the first disappointing video game thing of 2022 for me

The world they've created looks drab, empty, dull. And the textures look downright poor.

I'm on the fence about whether to get it or not, I'll probably end up waiting for reviews and post-release vids... but it doesn't look likely, after that.

Sorry peeps but if the main complaint are graphics, then I don’t see it as a major reason to not buy the game.

Well graphics are the major selling point of the unknown game at this point. With nothing else to really go off of considering this is said to be a new pokemon experience. However there are also complaints that the animations look like ass, which are another big point of a game. The overall look and feel of the game seems bad and it's worrying to me that they are not showing how the game plays. Sure you see gameplay, but you don't really see the player interacting with anything or fighting anything. Nothing is shown about the core gameplay loop and we are only two weeks away from launch. That's a fucking horrible sign.

I understand that but if graphics were the only issue then That’s not enough to sway my opinion. Some of my favorite games of all time don’t look graphically great like Dragon Age Origins.

I just think holding a game to the fire because of graphics is nonsensical. Graphics is the lowest priority for me when it comes to buying games.

I am of a similar reason, but there are problems.

  1. This game is most likely going to be $60, and this is a game coming from Nintendo. Something you would expect a higher quality of. I don't mind the art style, but graphically speaking it looks worse than any of Nintendo's other first party IPs. That's just inexcusable. Especially with the hundreds of billions Pokemon makes every year.
  2. This is not a budget title game. And even then, I've seen plenty of budget title games look better than this.
  3. There are Wii & PS2 era games that have more effort into this in terms of visuals and style.
  4. Nintendo has been doing this for decades. Scamming by playing two versions of the same game. Not improving much in graphics aside from maybe a few spin-off games. This was somewhat excusable back in the days of actual portable consoles, but the Switch is a home console despite its portability. Nintendo is trying to have it both ways.
  5. Despite whatever reception, it's going to sell anyway, and there's going to be a whole bunch of blind Nintendo defenders having their backs against the wall. Defending a mediocre product.
  6. Nintendo has been doing a couple scummier practices with the Pokemon license; they know this. There was that really weird mobile spin-off (not Pokemon go) that was also on Switch I believe, but I know Jim Sterling didn't like it. It was this really bad MOBA clone.
It's your choice, but I'm not spending that kind of money on something like this.

Which why I will wait for reviews first. I’m not 100. Percent on board with it.
