You are letting your nostalgia cloud your judgement, mate. Old Pokemon were sodding rubbish, if you ask me.

You are part of the problem. Oshawott is hideous. Dewott, however, is easily the coolest of the Gen 5 starter line, and in the top 5 best starter/starter evolutions across all generations.

No. I love my Pokemon White, and for every stupid, lazy pokemon, there are tons of awesome, badass pokemon. The differences are awesome, even the subtle ones that don't change gameplay.

Nostalgia makes me say old gen. The first time you face the Four, good times, man. Good times.

I don't see why people find Oshawott hideous nor do I care

Gameplay wise each generation has really improved on the last. As far as designs go, I really think Nintendo is scrapping the bottom of the barrel with Black and White. However, I am still playing it avidly because the gameplay keeps adding on from the last one.

There are people that like Jynx, too. Doesn't make it any less of a hideous Pokemon.

I'm not trying to be mean, but Oshawott has many characteristics that, to almost anyone, are just *bad.* The ear-things are not drawn-back enough, sitting out like clown-hair. The white skin is, again, reminiscent of clowns, and contrasts horribly with the blue clown-like fur, the orange clown-like nose, the dead pebble-like black eyes, and the mouth that looks like it's sad to be alive. I don't blame it. And the seashell on its stomach is so out of place, too.

That's not to say that he can't be salvaged. There are some absolutely incredible fan-made art pieces showing what a good Oshawott would look like if anyone at Nintendo cared about its design. For example...

http://th00.deviantart.net/fs70/150/f/2010/134/b/1/mijumaru_by_m514.jpg

This picture right here is a very cool version of Oshawott. The ears being enlarged and drawn back, the color contrast being toned down immensely, the shell looking far more natural. This passes as good design. The current one, however, fails aesthetically in many ways, and would earn a horrible grade in any design or animation class.

Still no pokemon even close to the awesomeness that is scyther. Silver was the peak, the pokemon designs have simply gotten ridiculous since then. When I got Pokemon Black, I looked through the whole pokedex on serebii.net, and saw 3 or 4 pokemon in the whole thing that didn't look terrible.

I don't know what your problem with the designs is. The one you picked seems fine to me.

But in terms of features and basically everything about the games that aren't the Pokémon themselves, hell no it wasn't "better" during the first few generations.

Event Pokémon you can never get because Nintendo holds no events.
Inventory space limited to 20 items.
Having to manually change your PC box at a Pokémon Center and being unable to catch anything if your party and current box are both full.
Having to go to the menu every time I want to cut down a tree or surf.
Only being able to trade and battle via link cable.

Those are just a few of the inconveniences that I do not miss when playing the newer Pokémon games.
QFT...and let me add a few more reasons why I suspect the first generations were nothing more than a beta for the later ones.

1. You only got cash by fighting trainers, which you could do only ONCE at first, or by selling items you found throughout the game. This meant you only had a finite amount of cash you could earn throughout the entire game, which ANY self-respecting gamer will tell you is a pants-on-head retarded idea for any RPG.

2. Red and Blue were badly buggy to the point where weird things happen. Safari Zone Pokémon appearing on the east coast of Cinnabar if you Fly out of the Safari Zone...that weird thing where you capture random Lv7 Pokémon north of Cerulean if you Teleport right as the trainer on the left hand side of the map spots you and then (just look it up, it's too long to explain)...and of course, MissingNo corrupting your save file.

3. For some reason, the designers had the Pokémon learn a variety of moves at various levels, but since you couldn't capture them until they were at a higher level and there was no way to get those moves they had already forgotten, it was kind of moot.

4. Ghost and Dragon types had NO real good representation in RBY and GSC...both in terms of available Pokémon of those types AND moves of that type.

To be honest...with these, and the reasons mjc mntioned, it's no wonder the original Pokémon games were among the games one had to use an Action Replay or similar device on to ACTUALLY PLAY THE GAME!

That's why I like BW. With all the refinements made over the generations, the game has finally reached a point where I don't think I need to tweak it via GS/AR/CB to enjoy it.

Stepping off soapbox now.

When it come to gameplay, no they weren't really better. The games that came after the first generation fixed problems and added new things that overall enhanced the gameplay. When it comes down to designs, I'd say it's all personal preference. I've been playing Pokemon since the beginning, and my favorites happen to be second and third gen. Forth gen and fifth gen are my second favorites, and my least favorite is first gen. A few of the newer designs are a bit silly, but there's always been silly designs. On the plus side, every gen has adorable Pokemon ^_^

Just look at Litwick here from the most recent generation. He's freaking adorable......and yet according to the Pokedex, he pretends to be a guide and steals the lifeforce of those who follow him. So cute, yet so devious :p

simply put, things always seem better when they first come out. whether some shows/games/etc. get progressively bad as they get older or stay the same, people simply lose interest in things they once liked.

I have enjoyed all of the games I have played so far (first:red, latest:white) and although I must admit that some of the new designs are stupid, especially some of the names, I enjoy it as a whole because the instant I start playing it the game is nostalgic to me as there are always pokemon I really like, and to me, the feeling I get from getting a Serperior now is just as good as getting a Venasaur in firered felt a few years back(I got a charizard in red). Plus, the mechanics are awesome now (hooray for permanent TMs and non-gym tied HMs!) so I wouldn't give the new games up.

People who complain about the new Pokemon designs need to shut the fuck up.

"Boo-hoo" you say, "Trubbish is a garbage can and vanillite is an ice cream cone!" you say?

Tangela is from gen 1 and it was a clump of weeds with googly-eyes and fucking sneakers!!

Cofagrius is awesome. Quit hattin'

The fact is, a lot of these "new" Pokemon designs are just Pokemon that were rejected from previous games due to lack of space on the cartridges.

I won't deny that none of the starter Pokemon have really grabbed me other than gen 1, but gen 5 gets pretty damn close.

Its about the designs....

The Gameplay is probley much more improved.
And like I said, I don't see your problem with the designs. Tepig doesn't look any more "complicated" than Cyndaquil, or worse in any other way for that matter. The only difference I see between the two myself is that Cyndaquil is more recognizable to me and I knew who it was instantly, whereas for Tepig I had to go "Uhm, who's that again? Fire pig thing... Oh I'll just look it up. ... Tepig, that's right."

Basically, as far as designs go, I have to agree with this:

No. In my opinion, from a pure gameplay perspective, each game is better than the last.

In terms of the actual Pokémon designs? Lets just say that if the generations had come out in reverse order I fully believe people would be complaining about how stupid Ditto, Jynx and Mewtwo look whilst praising the awesome designs of Throh, Bouffalant and Scraggy.

Nostalgia is a dirty, dirty thing.
I mean, how many people praise the 2nd gen for being the best when it brought us the most stinkers? Ledyba is a ladybug. Spinarak is a spider. Airados is a bigger spider. Furret is a ferret. Noctowl is an owl. Mareep is a sheep. Sunkern is a damned seed. Pineco is a stinking pine cone! Tediursa is a baby bear and Ursaring is a grown up bear. Milktank is a cow. Not only do the designs reek of "Oh shit, it's 4:50 PM on Friday and we still need a bunch of Pokémon; let's just draw normal stuff really quick so we can clock out for the weekend!", but so do most of the names. And then there are the ones where they decided not to be totally lazy and change things up a little: Girafarig is just a giraffe, but it has a second head instead of a tail. Stantler is a deer with weird antlers. Murkrow is crow having a bad hair day. Sunflora is a sunflower with a face. Aipom is a monkey with a hand on its tail. Politoed is just a big toad with a little swirly hair thing. Houndour and Houndoom are dogs with some fancy trim. Don't strain yourself designers, I wouldn't want you to exhaust yourself with these fountains of creativity!

People are so quick to forget that all generations have their poor designs. At least they tried some creativity with gen 5 instead of just copying as many real life objects as possible and slapping faces on them if they didn't already have them. I came here to catch Pokémon, not regular animals like cows and sheep.

Of course, I guess they fell back on old habits a few times... But this just makes question people who say "gen 2 was awesome but gen 5 has crappy designs like the trash can and the ice cream cone!" even more. Did you not notice that a lot of the gen 2 cast were also just other things?

It's just Pokemon getting old and Nintendo running out of ideas, the newer pokemon are just way too bizarre.
Take that piggy of a pokemon for example, that suppose to be a fire type? Sure it has the color going for it... kinda... but that's about it.
A cog, Klink, that evolve into three then four.
A "cell" pokemon, Solosis, which I think is completely absurd.
Vanillite... an icecream cone...
And Cofagrigus from Egyptian coffins.
Need I say more?
Don't get me wrong I really like pokemon (Generation 1-4)... just not the lastest Generation

When I get Black or White, I most likely going to end up most of my possible time in the dream world dragging earlier generation pokemon into my game to put onto my team.
I do this in nearly every pokemon thread here is a list of first gen pokemon:
sewage that turns into more sewage
magnets that turn into three magnets
something wiered that turns into three of itself (diglet)
jinx
pokeball that turns into upside down pokeball
bird that turns into three headed bird
stem cell (ditto)
a rock that turns into a larger rock that turns into a boulder
a rock with gas escaping turning into three rocks with gas escaping
a duck that is made out of magma
eggs that turn into a palm tree?

also the fifth gen is my favourite gen now before the fifth gen my favourite gen was the first also the fifth gen has brought us a brilliant set of bug pokemon

I used to be a massive fan of the Pokemon games, and I have to say, I liked all of the games right up to the fourth generation (Diamond, Pearl and Platinum). I think later versions made good use of the technology that was available at the time, such as the Global Wi-fi options on Diamond and Pearl and Pal Park, but for me, in my personal opinion, the best was the third generation (Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald). I think the Pokemon designs were fantastic and original, the soundtrack was ace, and the plot was pretty solid throughout. It felt great to play!

I haven't invested in Black or White, and I don't intend to. Even though i'm lead to believe it's a great game by many reviewers, i'm getting a bit old for the franchise now and i'm just not finding anything about the new Pokemon that grabs me. Zoroark looks alright, but, I dunno, it's just getting a bit tiresome now.

I like the original designs better, but yes, nostalgia is a very powerful force. I do not have a DS, so I am not getting B&W. Feel a little bit left out. Hmm, maybe I have a cousin I can buy one off of cheap.

I think the gameplay has been getting better but I do agree with those who feel that the designs have gone downhill since gold/silver.
