My God! Non-gamers not knowing about an un-released game?! BLASPHEMY!!

Seriously dude. It's still 3 weeks till EU/US release. And the game already have 4 millions of players after 8 months in Asia.
Fair point, but the Far East buys into MMO's a lot more than us sweaty westerners with our shoot em ups and sports games.

The real measure will be how many of those 4 million subscribers renew after a year.
I just say them there japanese bastids bettah be bring mes dat thar Monster Hunter MMO to duh US so I can go a huntin some monsters *Tips his cowboy hat and chews some straw*

How about this.

Does any MMO game NEED to topple WoW?

yes, they do. its a mediocre game at bets, with horrible graphics and a fan base thats completely arrogantly stubborn. (though i suppose thats what being a fan is =/)

people have to wake up and notice that this MMO monopoly isnt that amazing... <.<

though now i'm just one of those bitter bastards who seems like he's trying to rebel against society.....oh well...
I was unclear. I meant to ask if any game needs to topple WoW to be successful. I would hardly call what WoW has a monopoly. The largest consumer base is not the same as a monopoly. A monopoly would mean that NO MMO could be successful, because WoW strangles the market. Since there are many other games to choose from, and since Blizzard cannot actively take a role in suppressing development of those games, they don't have a monopoly.

Well now that you clarify yourself i'll respond accordingly :p
no, they do not need to topple WoW to be successful, as they said they would be fine being 2nd to WoW because even then it would be a win.
however there is some pride to taking down something of a giant dont you think?
Yes, there is. I know people who've tried to tell me "If an MMO doesn't beat WoW, it fails." I was just curious if that's a common idea.

it is an all to common idea actually. if anything that type of idea is phail >.>
many other games are very successful regardless of whether there fan base is larger then WoW or not.

I dont think WOW is untouchable just because it was peoples first or even that it has so many playing look at Everquest.
first one was the most popular mmo for nearly its entire time on release, the second improved on it in many ways but it got beat down to practically nothing by wow, long winded that my be but my point is there is no such thing as untouchable

I predict that when WoW dies, the number of MMO players will go down.
I don't see that any MMO will ever have the same amount of subscribers that WoW has, even if WoW is long dead.

The only two things Aion was boasting above WoW was possibility of flight and aerial combat. Granted WoW probably won't implement open world aerial combat any time soon (the possibility is there with aerial vehicles, but I haven't heard of them being usable outside of instances), WoW will close the gap of flight entirely with introduction of Old World flying in Cataclysm. As fun as Aion will be, it will not be offering anything new. So I doubt it will pull anyone away, seeing as most people don't play WoW because of lore, but out of social obligation and character attachment. (Yes, I said social obligation, and I mean it.) My prove is that most people in WoW don't even have a clue what the most basic lore is--hence they don't give a crap about what they are playing as long as they are playing something.

Personally, I wouldn't mind if WoW will shed some of these guys. The game will still be very much profitable with half the amount of current players, and chances are the half that is left will be a much better crowd.

I thank you for your kind words.

I try to be as respectable as possible, i'd rather not get into arguing ones opinions.
you brought a valid argument to the table and in a day where its hard not to find people who are "OMGGGGGGGggggg WoW FTWWWw!!1!!1! iT PwnZorZ Jo0 N()ObZZZZ!!!" bringing such intelligence to an argument/discussion is commendable.

The only problem is that WoW has a lot of people. That's it. It's an old game, so it's not necessarily considered a brilliant gaming experience by far anymore. In my opinion, it's the whole "millions of people can be wrong" argument. I never saw what people found to be so special about WoW.

I've played Aion, and have it preordered. I think it'll give it a run for its money, but not topple it. Like I said... all WoW has going for it is numbers now. I personally cant stand these comparisons though. It's a bad idea to make threads that are versus-types.

WOW has been very clever, you see in RL something popular dies when something uncool touches it or it does something uncool. However WOW will almost never have this problem (see diagram a/b) and therefore cannot become unpopular, if only because the bar is set so very very low.

Ahh. Wasn't sure if you were being sarcastic or not until then. I apologize for my agressive tone, but I don't like when people take me for a fool.

It's another repetitive, uninspired WoW-ish clone. It'll flop rather badly I predict
What will kill WoW is their crappy new expansion and Star Wars: The Old Republic a.k.a. KOTOR online.
Bioware making an MMORPG? Seems like a worthy adversary for Blizzard.
WoW is a repetitive clone of every other MMORPG out there. It's just done so horrible that it's favored by freaks and people who live in caves.

More to the point, you can't make an MMORPG original and/or creative. It's ALL been done before.

You can't make an MMORPG fun, because then there would be no concept of actually working endless hours being bored to death to actually feel accomplished. Until you see someone who has done it for twice the amount of time who has even less of a life, and has done it better.

MMORPGs are just a waste of time. It doesn't matter which one is best, I think they shouldn't even be spoken of.
