AK-47.

Because the Motherland will not fail me.
Quite right comrad!

OT: The M16 isnt the the most accurate, fast, or best rifle unlike the US military leads us to believe (that belongs to the Mauser, being in so many different incarnations and being able to be fired really fast by an expert). I personally pick the AK47 becuase i love the fucking thing and how it looks and even though its not the most powerful 7.62mm rifle, the bullet tumbles and shoots fast and looks cool, and Izhmash sounds cool. Also the ak47 is used by so many countries, has been made so much, has so much more cultural influence than a plastic peice of jamming crap, being on the flag of a country, and plus, it has wood on it!

They're both outdated weapons.

At the VERY least call it the ak-74. NOBODY uses the ak-47 anymore because the 74 is better in every way.

Screwing the rules [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTN2Zzm1SPI&NR=1], I'd choose either the G36 or the SG552.

An M16.

AMERICAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

EDIT: Before I get yelled at, there is, of course, more reasons, but I'm feeling very lazy.

Knowing nothing about guns, I go with the M-16. It looks cooler, is the weapon used in all the war movies, and Tank Dempsey says it best:

"M. One. Six. Love it or eat it!"

Please keep your unit's of measurement constant because it's altering the way your evidence is presented. An M16 is a military weapon and therefore fires a military round. Yes. A .22 is a POS if your intended use is fatal damage towards a human target from a fair distance. The civilian M4 family of rifles fire a .223 cartridge and the difference between the two is phenomenal. Also more different still, is the 5.56 NATO round which is what the M16 and military M4 family of rifles fires. The bullet is cheap to produce (that is the most important thing to consider here because that's ALL the military focuses on) and relatively effective with a veteran operator at the trigger. The difference is in the shot, trust me. Also, what oak trees and range are you firing at that a 5.56 won't go through an oak tree? Are they made out of depleted uranium or something? Seriously, the penetration power of the 5.56 has been considered a major problem recently. An Iraqi Freedom vet I ran into told me a story where had gotten a round off, it hit his target inches left of his center mass. The bullet passed through him and embedded itself in the concrete behind him. The dude didn't even get knocked down, he just slightly stumbled and then kept firing. That's a problem.

If it came down to it, AK every time. I'd have a more reliable weapon system with a round that can deliver enough kinetic energy to put down whatever it is I'm shooting at faster. Also, being a lefty, the weapon is a little more left handed friendly (ambidextrous magazine release, left handed fire mode selector) straight from the factory. M16's can't say the same thing.

AK 47.
1) it's a lot cooler to give your Xena war cry holding an AK
2) Assuming the game has a mildly realistic environment setting, AK 47 is the single most
reliable, maintainable weapon ever produced. Russian military technology does two things:
a) work b) stand the test of time. Just ask the NAZIS. *shit the MIG 29 is the ONLY
FIGHTER JET EVER MADE that can take an EMP pulse, and
stay gliding WITH NO POWER.*
3) "Burst Fire" can be accomplished with a steady trigger finger
4) The last round in the clip is the stock. As has been said, if you Master Chief someone with an M16, you get a broken M16.
5)Recoil. Yes, m16 has less, can't deny it. But the AK has a VERTICAL pattern. Aim for the solar plexus, fire 3 rounds and in every game I ever played, it scores death, often with a head shot.
6)Classic Wood Grain FTW.

I would go for the AK for the reason that it is remarkably durable and packs an almighty punch. bibbles made excellent points in favour of the M-16 and normally I would be right with them but the OP was assuming the gun would be in the hands of me and you, who collectivey know around the square-root of fuck-all about weapon maintenance. An AK is more reliable as it's so simple and can withstand a fair amount of abuse.

Wierd really as, when airsofting, im a 100% Armalite man!

I'm taking a third option.

An AusStyer
Um.... Steyr Aug? good choice. Unfortunately, as it's not on the rack, you get shot.
No, the Austyer

F88 Austeyr: The Australian Army's modified version of the Steyr AUG A1. Changes for the Australian version include a bayonet lug, a 1:7 in rifling pitch as found in the M16A2 rifle, optimized for the heavier 62-grain NATO-standard SS109/M855 round and an "automatic lockout" selector that can physically disable the fully automatic position of the 2-stage trigger mechanism found on the standard AUG. Contrary to popular belief the Australian issued F88 does not have the crosshair inside the "doughnut", however the New Zealand issued AUG does incorporate this feature. The AUG won a competition against the prototype of what would become the Bushmaster M17S. The components are built under license at the Australian Defence Industries factory in Lithgow, New South Wales (now known as Thales Australia).[20]

Of the two available, the M16A4

AK-47 is an easy choice. Its more reliable, nigh indetructable, easy to maintain. And Instead of having impotent 5,56 baby bullets that cover soak up, i'll shoot people straight through whatever the hell they're sitting behind.

And regarding the sight-rail problems. That was fixed, so anyone using the whole "its inaccurate" BS can shove a stick into their brain :p

I trust in the ever reliable AK47 to get me through a gun fight or the hoard..

M16s kinda fit in to gaming as the gun that everyone knows, it got into Tomb Raider for God's sake.. and therefore the M16 is kind of bland and boring to me..

+ in gaming the AK47 is a nice challenge as well as being satisfying to hear the almighty roar of the gun as it fires solid rounds into the enemies of the Motherland..

What am I killing, and how close to accurate are the actual weapons?

While powerful AK-47s have piss accuracy and once those loose tolerances actually go you're holding a piece of scrap metal.

M-16's, while firing less powerful rounds are also more accurate and don't make your shoulder feel like it's been kicked around by an ox for the last half hour.

In real life I'd choose AK since I know how to operate one, but in a vidya I'll always favor m16 because it just looks cooler.

I read in the zombie survival guide the M16 is a terrible weapon, cant be used as a emergency club (the stock will shatter), hard to maintain and has a tendency to jam
You have that book too!

Isn't that why they issue bayonets and train US Marines in MCMAP?
So bring a combat Knife, and an AK 47. Still more options. Also see Russian Ballistic Knife.

I'm sorry but I believe that the most unrelentingly vicious offense is the best. A detachable knife on my gun is inferior to an unbreakable gun. And if I have no ammo, and you run from my BKnife, you get shot in the back. Also Bayonets reduce accuracy. Period.
