One for the film fans: which do you prefer Ridley Scott's intense horror or James Cameron's action epic? Remember this is personal preference not which one is superior as they are vastly different films trying to achieve different goals. Personally while I love Alien, nothing can beat Aliens, I have literally never been on the edge of my seat as much as I was at the end of that movie.

Also I thought Alien 3 was alright I don't get why everyone hates it so much.

EDIT: I added Alien 3 and Resurrection to the poll just for you crazy people (at least I think I did, not sure if it worked :S).

Wait, Alien was a horror film? I don't remember being scared at all... (I'll be re-watching it soon though).

But, unfortunately, I haven't seen Aliens yet, so, by default, Alien wins my vote.

I think the main reason Alien 3 get's so much hate (besides the fact that it's not very good) is that it was following Alien and Aliens, that's a tough act to follow and Alien 3 sure was a letdown.

Oh and as for the poll I voted Aliens.

Alien for me, once you start adding more, they start to feel like your average mook.
Back when it was just one it felt like some insanely scary badass..thingy

Alien.

Purely because it really makes it hit home how how helpless humans are against a predator when we have no weapons to defend ourselves.

Also, the less you see of something, the scarier it is.

I know right? I love the gallows humour of the third one, has some of the sickest quotes in the entire saga
"Stupid sod backed into the nine foot fan"

I'm gonna have to say Aliens though. But saying that, the first one was a classic example of putting horror into a sci-fi element.
A good chunk of the movie was about putting the characters together, setting the scene and only then do we introduce the alien in question. That beats a lot of standard dumb gore fests right there.

I personally do prefer the second though as it brings in an entire group of marines and yet they still get massacred. Again, the film was put together in a similar vein to the first one so we see a slow but inevitable build up

This is a REALLY hard question because of how different they are... But I'm going to say Aliens because I like action more.

Watch Aliens. It really is a fantastic horror/action film. It is one of my personal faves. Trust me, you won't regret it.

OT: I would say that Aliens was my favorite of the two. Alien was pretty darn good, but there is just something about Aliens that resonates with me more. It might be because I really like strong female leads, and Ridley reaches Buffy/Trinity levels of badass in Aliens...

I'm probably the only person on the planet who thought Aliens was the worst in the series... by far. Even though it was a good movie.

Aliens for popularizing the "badass military squad makes contact with horrible aliens before getting eaten by them" trope.

gotta hand it to alien. i LOVED the scene setting, how it takes over half an hour before an alien even turns up, even longer before it becomes a threat, but i am a huge fan of suspense in horror films. aliens had a similar setup, with quite a long wait before something turned up, but i thought that was a bit out of place for an action film =\

so yeah, alien, because i thought the film worked better as a horror, and i loved the pacing ^^

I will do.

I'll be watching all 4 Alien films, then all 3 Predator films, and then the 2 Alien vs. Predator films, all in a row. =D

While I think Aliens was a bit more spooky than most recent films, and I would certainly class it as a more "fun" film that Alien, once the grenade launchers and auto-turrets came along most of the suspense decided to wander off.
I also think that Alien was a bit less predictable, which is generally a good thing. So really, it's based on choice. Want a horror? Alien. Want a sort of horror-y action? Aliens.

They're both some of the greatest movies in their respective genres. And don't believe any rumors you may hear about them making any Alien movies after the first two :)

Alien's appeal was the shock and horror, but that just isn't there anymore after a couple of decades of watching the film.

That's where Aliens' character-oriented story and great action shines. Watching Cameron's sequel is still fun.

Aliens just felt better to me.

For some reason, I like the seemingly endless horde better than the one, scary thing style.
