It was a jerkish thing for you to say, but it was their fault. They decided to do what they did, and now the survivors have to live with that.
Doesn't make you a bad person for declining, just a bit of a jerk for saying what you did at such a time and to their faces, seeing as they will have to live with the death of that friend.

I actually agree with you wholeheartedly that they should now suffer the consequences of their actions. I'd support any victims, had there been any. Though you could have probably just declined, unless asked why you weren't donating to the girls - then let the reason rip!

Which is what I would have done. Wait to be asked, "Well, why the hell not?!" Then let the answer fly!

i can't tell you how i feel about the girls that did that because they did do something less that intelgent but they were younge and thats what happened, unfortante who it maybe. eventhough you didn't donate you still seem to be a good person because you asked, a bad person would feel no semibalnce of remores or doubt, i can't say i would have do the same but i'm canadian so this sort of thing doesn't come up because of health care.

So this Tuesday 3 girls went drunk driving at 11 AM and crashed. 1 died 2 are in a coma. One of there friends came around asking for a donation to help pay there medical bills. I declined and said if theyre dumb enough to go drunk driving at 11 in the morning on a snowday when the roads are bad then they can face the consequence and pay for it themselves. I got a lot of dirty looks and i was told i was being selfish. Does this mean im a jerk or would you have done the same?

Meh. I would decline. A few years back we had an accident around here when two people got stoned and tried to drive around railroad gates. Both killed, one pregnant. I felt no remorse for them, and you shouldn't either.

They pay monthly, not when you wake up I believe and if no one can pay, then they take them off life-support I would imagine or come to some kind of deal with the Insurance company or the victim's family. Needless to say, its a flawed system.

The hospital can not take someone off life support without the permission of the next of kin or someone who has been granted that authority by the coma patients last will and testament. That said you will have one hell of a bill when you wake up. Hope you invested.

Driving drunk: Plain stupid.
Driving drunk in snowy roads: probably undeserving of sympathy.

Then again, that they were drunk might have a thing to say about ignoring the roads, but they were still stupid enough to drink and drive. Do you pity the fool that loses his arm sticking it down the throat of a sleeping bear?

I would say they got what they deserved. They made a stupid decision and could have hurt more than just themselves. If they had hit a pedestrian or, another car they would have been prosecuted. Let them pay their own way.

Sure, many of my own standards overlap with them; but I don't think you're bad for not donating money to the kind of people who go drunk driving.

I can't really relate to the situation though. Since, you know, healthcare is free here.

So if you have no family or friends, and no insurance, the hospital takes you off of life support?

And what you said is true, however hurtful it is... I've lost more than my fair share of friends to drunk drivers so I have little if any sympathy for them...

...not sure if I would have said that to their friend though...
