I voted for "sometimes, depends on the wearer."

It really depends on the wearer's facial structure to be honest. Like any hairstyle, it looks good on some people and bad on others.

I tie my hair back for work.

I'm completely indifferent as to whether it's "cool" or not, I'm not even bothered if it's attractive. I look good with my hair down, while I'm working...I don't care.

Out of interest, what is "cool" these days?

Can't really say without seeing it. Generally no, they look bad on like 90% of guys I have seen with them.

My husband stopped getting haircuts and shaving awhile ago, and to keep his hair out of his face when he's working he'll just tie it back at the nape of his neck (not really on the top of his head). At home or out and about, it just hangs free.

I don't think he really does it to be cool, he just told me he got tired of all the clipping and shaving, and what not. And that when he was on the ranch in MT, he didn't really maintain it either, and he feels much more comfortable this way. But his hair is naturally curvy and wavy, so it looks nice when it hangs free. He's also got a pretty strong beard going that he trims every once in awhile.

It's just hair. I don't have a problem with it (I actually think it's pretty handsome on him), and even if I did have a problem with it- what would he care? It's his head. Not going to nag him about it and act self-righteous about a ponytail. You want to wear a ponytail - just do it. (But for the love of geebus, keep your hair clean!!!)

As someone who used to have a pony tail before I cut my hair, I can say usually yes they are, but long hair is a pain to take care of.

Depends of whether or not you can pull it off. Personally I think most guys can't but there are always exceptions.

I find that they usually don't work. Ever since I've been at college I've worn them most of the time, simply because they are convenient and they keep hair out of your face. I myself have been growing my hair since the end of the sixth grade, with the occasional trim to keep it away from my buttocks. But I've seen a few people around with them, including myself, and I don't think that they do much.

Although, they will make you look less like Jesus if that's what you're going for.

If I ever let my hair grow that long, then yes. I think I would look good with a ponytail. I am a guy, and I think it is worth a shot.

For guys? No, absolutely not cool. There are execptions to that blanket statement out there, but even the most badass hero/villain in movies suffers from less cool with a pony tail.

If you were animated, you would be cool.

It depends. If you wear pastels... I will have to shoot you, because then you look like a stereotype.

George Carlin had a ponytail.

So ponytails are awesome.
Carlin was awesome for his randy humor. He was a poor example of cool physical appearance. He was however an exellent example of "this is how I like it, and screw you if you disagree." Well, his words would have probably been more choice. :3 So in a way you're right.

No. I have hair down to my nips, and I wear in a ponytail whenever I play guitar (hint, I play it a shitload) ponytails are never cool.

Depends on the person. I look ridiculously feminine with my hair pulled back in a 3-4 inch tail. In the hot summers though it's nearly required to keep hair up. Careful though, if you aren't masculine looking enough, you can be hit on *looks back at 2010 summer*

You absolutely 100% need to have a beard/awesome moustache to pull off a ponytail. I don't care who you are or how popular you are or how awesome you are. If you are a male, with a ponytail, you must have facial hair, otherwise it is proven fact that you look like a prick.
This, definitely, and even then the probablility of not pulling the ponytail off right is still high.

Also ponytails don't really have a 'fight the system' feel to them- you're tying your hair up! restricting and controlling it! You want 'fight the system' then you let it hang loose. Sure hippies do too, but as long as you look focused (and not stoned) people will get the right vibe off you.

I ware a ponytail everyday because;

1) I find short hair generic and boring
2) My hair at mid length is a ridicules afro
3) Long hair that isn't tied back gets in my face and is itchy

It all comes down to your own hair type and I ware one for practical reasons rather than ascetic, although my hair is a pretty ridiculous out. For most hair it looks better at a medium length and down.
