I really enjoyed the 360 remake of the N64's "Conker's Bad Fur Day"
...What?!
I really enjoyed a remake
No, no, no, no.

There's a Conker's Bad Fur Day on the X-Box 360?! One where they didn't censor every bit of swearing?!

Why didn't I know of this?
It's called Conker Live And Reloaded.
It was released in 2004 so I doubt you can get one now.
Also the censoring is actually heavier now.
...That was on X-Box, not the 360...

To be honest, I do not care if there are remakes. Sure, most remakes are terrible, most horror remakes in particular, but sometimes, the remakes are just as good, if not better, than the original. The Nutty Professor remake was just as good as the first one. 3:10 to Yuma was better than the original. The remake of Friday the 13th is probably the best Jason movie of its type because it boiled down all the cliches of the original series into one movie.

I am pretty sure if the remake was called something other than the original title, many of would not be as pissed off. Some of those remakes are: A Fistful of Dollars was a remake of Yojimbo, The Magnificent Seven is a remake of Seven Samurai, 4 Brothers was a remake of the Sons of Katie Elder, Assault on Precinct 13 is a remake of Fort Bravo, and Gran Torino is a remake of High Noon.

There is a Nightmare on Elm Street remake coming out on April 30th. I do not care if that this remake exists because I gave up on caring eons ago. I am pretty sure most of you would not give a shit if it were called Never Sleep Again instead of Nightmare on Elm Street.

Yes. John Carpenters 'The Thing' is a remake and is one of my favourite movies, which justifies all the remakes out there.

Remakes of games are occasionally done well, but I hate when they are of Mario or are of shitty movies and they remake the shitty movie just worse this time!

Oh goodie, the Yahtzee argument...-_-

No there isn't anything wrong with sequels...actually I like sequels, and unless they manage to completely fuck up the canon (SW prequels, Indiana: Crystal Skulls, Star Trek 2009) I don't see why people have a problem with them.

In video games, sequels tend to improve game mechanics and interplay, which is a better reason for games more than films.

The problem with doing away with sequels is you'd end up with just more clones, instead of 4 to 5 MW or GoW clones, you'd probably end up with 20+.

Plus, a lot of us want to see a story continue , we just have to accept not all the material is going to be 100% (ever watch old Star Trek or Twilight Zone episodes? not every one is going to be your favorite), and not everyone is going to agree which installment was the best.

This applies to games and movies. I vote "no". I would like to see something new. However, I can see that alot of developers (and screenwriters) are just running out of ideas.

Should we accept a remake of a classic? Or should we demend that the developers get off their asses and put some innovation in their games?
Wow, that's definitely not a completely loaded question.

I'd rather see completely new products then rehashes of what I have already played.

Distinction between remake and re-release.

Re-releases would be things like Conkers on Xbox, it was basically a straight port of the N64 code and tweaked up the quality (not by much I might add). Same with the upcoming Perfect Dark for XBLA, yeah, it has been improved a hell of a lot graphically but it's not a remake.
others I'd include are:
-God of War Collection
-Street fighter 2, HD Remix
-Banjo Kazooie
-Banjo Tooie (god damn it Rare, can you make a good new game rather than JUST re-release your classics?)
-Earthworm Jim HD

A few new textures, features and resolution-bump doesn't quite fit the "remake" definition.

Now REMAKES would be something like Resident Evil (2002) where they really just did the whole thing over again, they literally made it again, starting from scratch.

Doom 3 (to spite the number suffix indicating a sequel) is effectively a remake of the original 1992 Doom but switch out run-and-gun for survival-horror. The recent Aliens verses Predator, a remake in my book, it's sure not a sequel to any of the other AvP games. All of these are at least decent, and at the very least they remind you of the original that you may be more likely to visit.

One of my favourite has to be Tomb Raider Anniversary, one thing I love about that is how each game has their own qualities and overall I like each equally for what they do, Tomb Raider 1 is just soooo 90's.
I think the key to a good remake is remind of the old... but mix things up a bit to keep it fresh and ideally it will make someone who plays and loves the remake go back to play the original.

But I also appreciate re-releases, I missed banjo-kazooie when it came out, I also LOVED Perfect Dark, my N64 is long gone and I'd love to return to it with new controls, graphics upgrade and *nerd-gasm* online multiplayer... (AW CRAP, I just realised I need to buy XBL Gold membership). Still, re-release are win to me because it makes for a great retrospective, its strange that it is so easy to go back and watch a film from 1997, yet doing the same for a game is so hard.

That's actually a pretty tough question to answer. I'm not against remakes where deserved, or simply refining an idea that works but has issues in execution, but new ideas are very important.

There's nothing wrong or inherently non-innovative about remakes. The problem is that we don't allow innovation in them. In the movie industry, a remake is a complete re-imagining of an old movie. In gaming, however, we are so attached to our classic games that we can't stand to see them made again unless it's just a re-release of the exact same game. A few can slip by with a retranslation and an extra area or something, but for the most part gamers can't stand to see their favorite games changed.

I say: screw that. Sure, Chrono Trigger was an amazing game, arguably the best RPG ever made (not my personal opinion, but I do love the game and it's a popular view). But if someone were to remake it from the ground up, I would be excited to see how it would turn out. Admittedly, I would prefer that the makers include some of the original team, and maybe they keep the same soundtrack (orchestrated, of course: best soundtrack I've ever heard), but completely remaking the game. That is a true remake, and we don't see enough of those in the gaming world.

I'm still rooting for a Final Fantasy VII remake.

i think they're okay as long as they keep everything that was good and make bad things better while still keeping the same sense of originality

Dealing in absolutes is the way of the Darkside... (Sorry I just saw the end of SW:Episode 3 recently.)
Both can be good or bad thinking one-way is other done or not is mout(sp?) Though it can be bad for individual series to never leave the backyard or burning bridges every single time.

They Viciously neutered that game... I poured out a beer for Conker's Bad Fur Day after playing Conker Reloaded.

Except it's bloody CENSORED, the game would have been perfect if they didn't censor it.

I'm playing Soul Silver RIGHT NOW. Guess my answer!

Since its a remake...
Y...You bastard! ...I should be playing that too but it hasn't shipped yet! ...So how is it? Haha. To be honest I had my original copy way back when stolen before I made it past the 2nd gym leader, that's why I'm getting this version to play what was robbed from me! ...That and it looked good. I'm looking forward to it all the same.

As long as the game has new artwork and/or content, it is acceptable. It brings a great game into the new generation who may not have seen it and nobody is forcing you to buy it, so the gamers who already played the old version don't lose anything.

Seriously, why are gamers always looking for something to be upset about? Remakes? Really, remakes bother you? You honestly waste time and energy being upset about remakes?
