I've beaten Halo on legendery and I'm replaying kh2 on the higher difficulty setting. It depends how long the game is, if it took my 60 hours to complete it I probably won't replay it.

usually i try whatever difficulty is above "Normal." If there are only 3 choices, i go with the middle one, then I'll try it on Hard or whatever, I like playing through games at least twice

Not afraid of the hardest settings per se. It depends on a couple of things. The Witcher for example had pretty boring combat, but an ok story with cool consequences for your actions, so I dropped the difficulty on that so I could enjoy the story more. I've been playing X-Com too long to consider playing it at anything other than hardest though. Normally I'll start a game on Normal and then if the game is too easy or doesn't feel challenging enough I'll up the difficulty or start adding constraints to my play that make it artificially harder.

God yes. I always know I'll fail.
To be honest...I've only played through every game I own on easy difficulty. xD I've never really thought to play through games on a setting other than easy because I'll give up as soon as I can't do it, or I die or whatever. Meh.

whenever i start a game; i usually try out the first few levels on each difficulty. Whichever provides the most entertainment (usually the hard(er) ones,) i stick with; and always have fun.

Halo series on legendary was funnest for me;
Muramasa the demon blade for Wii was best on shiguri mode.
Bioshock 2 i kept on normal; but big sisters man.... too damn annoying on any difficulty.

I sometimes crank up the difficulty to max at random. Only a few games I don't do this. Ninja Gaiden... Ninja Gaiden...

I like a challenge, though.

If I think I'll like a game and want to spend a bit of time in it I usually go for 'hard'.
If I do a second playthrough I'll usually try to make it harder (like 'nightmare' or some sort of achievement).

If I hated the gameplay but liked the story I might turn it down but I can't think of that happening.

I play all the difficulty settings in order from easiest to hardest.

And I'm not scared of higher difficulty. I did beat God of War on God Mode, you know.

I play the easiest difficulty, then the hardest. I'm odd like that. Recently I've started at normal to make sure I have at least a bit of a challenge, though for some games I've just gone straight to the hardest difficulty.
Basically this was going to be my reply. Damn you ninjas.

I played Killzone 2 for the first time on the Most difficult setting available...I ended up facepalming at one bit in particular and quitting out to normal mode, just so when it came to ultra Hard, Id know where all the set pieces were and who I'd be fighting...

No. I usually just play through on easy or normal, before I tackle the harder difficulties (if it's worth another playthrough)

Only in Prototype, that muthafucking game is terrifying on Normal! It made me throw my controller to the floor, no game has ever made me do that!

Other than that, I'm usually only scared of higher difficulty when I just got the game. After beating it I simply move on to the harder settings.

I automatically choose the easiest difficulty because a person with only 7 year's game experience's 'medium' is a person with 20 year's game experience's 'so easy you might as well be falling asleep'.

Unless it's a rhythm game. If it's a sequel to one I have played before, it's almost always expert. If it's new, I choose 'Medium' to learn the ropes and learn 'the catch'. For example, DDR's catch is that you don't return your feet to the center, drumming on Rock Band is that you have to hold down the foot pedal and not get intimidated by it, ect. I only choose 'beginner' or 'easy' if 'the catch' grasps me too hard on medium. Once I realize 'the catch' and get over it, and I try to as quickly as possible, I go up to the next one and practice that enough until I play expert.

I used to start on easy so I knew what I was getting into. Now I start on Normal so I have a challenge. But I'm also starting to think that maybe normal isn't challenging enough and I need to start on the highest difficulty. I wonder.

Not scared per se, but games just loose all enjoyment when on super high difficulties, im quite happy playing on normal where i can appreciate the game instea of getting frustrated by my lack of abilities
