I usually play on Normal first then play on harder difficulties. I only play Lost Planet 2 on hard now.

I start my games on the hardest available, and work my way to easy. If I unlock a new harder setting, I do the others then get back to that one. Im not afraid of a challenge, Im afraid itll be too easy to hold my interest in the long run.

I used to always play on the easiest setting when I was younger, now I play on Medium / Hard like settings depending on the game for the first run. After I know how to play and understand it, I go straight for the highest setting. Unless it's just absolutely brutal, like when I did Mass Effect 2 on Insanity difficulty with a level one character. Oh man, that was horrifying!

I always beat it on Normal first and if I like it I go into the hardest difficulty for bragging rights and a nice challenge.

Hard is usually too hard for me. I get pissed off at the dumbest parts and have to quit before I destroy my console. For example, Dead Space - the turret part. Gears 2 - the moving turret part on insane.....I hate that shit!!!!
Every time I think to myself "I'm going to replay Dead Space on Hard!" I remember that horrible asteroids mini-game and just play something else... I sure hope someone told them how much that part sucked and they'll stay away from it in the sequel.

I normally start at normal, since I like to try combinations and tactics, and then second time do max difficulty, to try to make it more efficient.

Not afraid, I just find that games being obscenely hard detract from my enjoyment without giving me any particular joy.

It is only when there are special items available only on harder levels that I bother playing them.

Some people are not so keen on getting up a higher difficulty, because of the amount of times that you will die before you get used to it.

So escapist, ever been scared of the Veteren or Legendary or whatever difficulties?
i wouldn't say i was afraid of the higher levels of difficulty, but as i have said before, i have enough challenges in my real life that i typically don't go looking for another one when i sit down to relax and play a few games.

normal is fine by me ... hell, i will even knock it down to easy time and again.

Nope. I've beaten many games on the hardest difficulties. I just don't start on them right away, like my brother does, the fool.

I'll usually play through a game on Normal first unless I've played through a prequel (or sequel), then I'll play through it on Hard or Advanced or whatever.

The only time I'll ever play through a game on easy if its the first time that I've ever played a game like it. Or if it rapes me just that much.

I usually play through on easy or normal first to test out the waters. I don't mind a challenge but I certainly do not want to have the game experience ruined by having the game be too difficult.

Afraid of? No. Been able to play? Mostly no. Only games I've actually been able to beat on hard settings without cheating were the pre-Project 8 Tony Hawk games.

Never been afraid of higher difficulty settings per-se, I just prefer to play a game and enjoy it, not get absolutely frustrated over it and rage all over the place.

I get frustrated easily. :3

Only in Prototype, that muthafucking game is terrifying on Normal! It made me throw my controller to the floor, no game has ever made me do that!

Other than that, I'm usually only scared of higher difficulty when I just got the game. After beating it I simply move on to the harder settings.
I'm so glad to see someone else say this. I quit prototype on normal and couldn't play it for six months. Then last week I put it on easy and finally finished it. Then I only get a measly 40 achievement points, its bullshit.

OT: I start easy and then move up to hard if the game is fun, unless its prototype, then just stick to easy.

maybe as a kid, but I only play what I play on the hardest setting. No point otherwise.

Overall games now a days are TOO easy. Developers don't (normally) seem to know how to make the game challenging even on the harder difficulties. Therefore, I play every game on the hardest difficulty from the get go. If the game ends up actually being extremely difficult I usually try to stick it out unless I'm just getting the shit kicked out of me (i.e. Brutal Difficulty on Starcraft 2 after not playing any RTS for like 8 years.). I like a challenge in games. Doesn't necessarily mean dying every 3 seconds, but I like to have to think about how to proceed in a game.

Off topic a little bit - Probably the worst game I've ever played at hardest difficulty was Call of Duty 5: World at War. Their way of increasing the difficulty in the game was not to make the enemies smarter, but rather to just give each of them 3 or 4 pipe bombs and allow them to throw them EXACTLY on top of you. Every single time I engaged anyone in that game, the first part of the battle would consist of me just throwing back pipe bombs for a good 30 seconds.

Not really. Depending on the game, I even start on higher. (CoD mostly, then I only have to play through once)
