It's not okay for anyone to show too much affection in public. I think it's inconsiderate to others who probably don't want to see that.

I thought about going for the "I'd go to war for him, I asked, he told, I'd STILL go to war with him" joke, but I left it alone.

And I have far more respect for people who say "PDA is inappropriate regardless of the genders of the participants" than people who are like "eew, dudes kissing" or "hawt, chicks making out". Apply a consistent standard, please. (although as affectionate as I tend to be, I'd rather it be a standard where people get to be lovey-dovey to each other.)

That guy is now my closest male friend, a guy I'd go to war with, the guy who singlehandedly turned me from a frothing Republican asswipe into a tireless crusader for equality, because he is just that awesome. And I say that as a guy who's completely straight.

I've met his friends. Met a couple of his lovers, even (a double date with three guys and a girl? Why yes.) And I'm no longer a homophobe. Thanks, Mike.

That's a lot more than most people ever give 'us'. Even if you did it to avoid getting your then-girlfriend mad, you did it. Even after having a gay man try to rape you. Granted, it may have been more traumatic for him, it was still a situation that affected your perception, and opinions.

It's nice to see.

OT - What I hate the absolute most is how it's okay for say... me and another girl to make-out or have sex, but as soon as it's two guys, it becomes disgusting and unacceptable. Don't get me wrong, I understand and respect people not wanting to see two guys make out, as that sort of thing is always best left to a private setting, but I don't believe it's fair to claim to accept it, but only for lesbians, and not homosexuals.

I am in no way encouraging people to show their feelings in public. I'd just rather not see two guys making out. I would also not rather see a couple making out as well. Why? Because you need to think of the children you don't need to. You can always do it sometime else where people aren't around so why do it in public? A harmless kiss I wouldn't mind but please, get a room. Note that I live in NZ. Not common around here.

As I can see, there are two definitions of homophobia:

1) The fear of sexual interaction with the same sex (fear of liking the same).
2) The fear of those who have sexual interaction with the same sex (fear of those who like the same).

Perhaps the first definition is more suiting to the meaning of the word.

It's a cultural/evolutionary thing. Things like the Bible being more or less "the List o' Morals" (it would be more accurate to say it's a survival guide for early man) have ingrained a negative opinion of homosexuality in people. In addition, homosexuality does not help propagate the species so we have evolved an instinctual aversion to it.

Things like that are the primary reason there's so much resistance to homosexuality.

My take on it can be summarized as "Whatever floats your boat." It's not my thing, but if someone wants to do it, all the more power to them. It's none of my business.

Edit: I will say that people who deliberately act excessively flamboyant or whatever in order to flaunt their sexuality annoy the shit out of me (just like anyone else who demands attention for a ridiculous reason). It's not a problem with homosexuals so much as the "HEY YOU! I'M GAY! LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME!" mentality.

The bits of the Bible I'm referring to (mostly the Torah, but a handful of other Old Testament books) have existed, in one form or another, since the Old Kingdom of Egypt. All the laws and shit in those scriptures are almost universally a guide to healthy living without all the fancy technology we have today. They've existed in some form since shortly after the dawn of civilization, and they're all basically just a collection of wisdom gained through cultural experience.

What that means is that we've had an anti-gay mindset for as long as there's been recorded history (and probably longer). That doesn't mean we can't change, just that it's a very large part of the reason homosexuality has received so many negative reactions.

Most homophobic people aren't against the people so much as they are against their acts, I assume only because of social conditioning, from early in life we're tought that a man is meant to be paired with a woman and so on, its pretty simple, and truth be told, its right.

I'm not homophobic, I actually quite like most gay people, mostly because they face some adversity so they tend to have a bit of character built up, but also because they tend to be much more open sexually. (provided they're all happy with being gay, not really a fan of those who aren't)
