I'm trying to get to the level of enlightenment where I completely disregard the idea -and more pertinently, the need- for God. It's hard, though, because in the past a belief in God has been a crutch for me. But on the other hand, how can I believe in something that has absolutely no proof? I take no pleasure in saying it, and I mean no offense, but Father Christmas is more believable to me than God.

Can't understand it personally, there is no evidence for any of the stuff the Bible claims.
Its simple: you expect me to believe there is a "man" sitting in the clouds watching over us, who made everything in the universe and is the reason for all life everywhere? He sent down his son to "die for our sins" Really? And he could cure people of all illnesses just by touching them? And he came back from the dead!? Sounds cool: What evidence do you have for it? That book huh? No outside sources or historical evidence that this "Jesus" fella, let alone his "father", even existed? Interesting... (rings for the guys in straight jackets)
I used to be someone who believed in allowing everyone the freedom of religion. But I don't anymore: religion holds back the people of this earth, its a form of mass delusion that cannot be conductive to the advancement of the species. Whats the difference between a "cult" and all the major religions? Number of followers. Thats it.
I think the encyclopedia dramatica summed it up brilliantly, look up "God" and one of the descriptions says "Santa Claus for adults"

I guess it still seems like a yes/no question to me.
PERSONALLY, I recently moved from Cultural Christian to completely non-religious. I don't think any of my current values are "christian values," even if they're christian in name only.
Indeed I am, Lutheran here and proud to be one. I also find it fun that for some reason the internet seems to have no idea what a Lutheran is, even if they could recite the life of Martin Luther like it was the Hungry Caterpillar.
I've tried to be an atheist, just doesn't sit right with me. A mix of personal experiences and an outlook on the world makes me simply unable to accept that a world this beautiful and with so much potential is as pointless and mundane as people like Richard Dawkins (whom I do not consider to be the average atheist, mind you.) would insist on me believing.
I'm not a fan of heavy-handed preaching on either side, but with atheists it bothers me more. When religious people are trying to convert you at least they have the motivation (in most cases) of wanting you to have eternal joy/peace/etc. When an atheist does it, it feels to me like their sole goal is to suck all the magic out of the world for you.

Did you make this thread expecting anything less than about 99% of the votes being for atheism? The Escapist is one of the most anti-Christian places on the Internet.
Which is a shame, because I am a Catholic. Well, I'm probably going to have to deal with the whole "Anyone who believes in God is a fool" argument, so I guess being on this site will give me good experience. *sigh*

I'm agnostic, but I still believe in God and Jesus. It's just that I started to get a bit cautious around the organized religions.
I was raised Catholic but I'm more Agnostic now than anything. I don't like any of the organized religions I have found. My theory is that if God is as good as people say he is he will forgive me.

Yes, I am a Anglican Christain from the Church Of England, that basicly means yes, but I dont really take some of the rules seriously, like go to church every weel, So I guess you can say, I am but im not the most serious person about it.

My mum is. She's not agnostic, she firmly believes there is a God. But she also doesn't 100% agree with any religion.
She thinks some of them get some things right. But most of them focus on the wrong things. Or worse, abuse the parts that serve them best and ignore everything else. If she were to describe herself, she would probably say she was more spiritual than religious or some hippy crap like that.
I'm mostly agnostic in that I don't actually give a shit, I think there are more important things to be concerned with. But I just figured I should point that out.

Agnostic is not a 3rd option. Either you believe or you don't. An agnostic is just unsure why they feel the way they do.thelonewolf266 said:

These people have no idea how free I feel and how happy I really am. I do not have some cosmic guilt that follows me everywhere and makes me feel terrible about supposed "sins" that I commit. I'm not religious because I don't see why I should believe a book that was written hundreds of years ago when they thought the world was flat. That being said, I do think that religion can be a good thing as they have good morals to live by. I know that Islam, Buddhism and Christianty teach peace. (Others probably do but they're the only ones I know about.) Also, some of my best friends are Catholic and Muslim so I have no problem with people believing it, just no preaching to me.
