The only possible answer is Quake 3. It revolutionized the genre imho. Others are nice for their stories or innovations but that doesn't make them the best in terms of being FPS's. Quake 3 was pure bloodshed, easily modded, easily picked up and is even now a competitive game.

Painkiller, again, I know, but Painkiller.

It just remembered that games should be FUN, something that keeps getting forgotten.

I know some of the black tarot missions are a bit tedious, but they're entirely optional, like achievements with a reward.

On top of the FUN, they did big bosses so well!

Half-Life 2 is the best, no doubt about it. But I'm sure that there will be a game that takse the throne from Half-Life 2. If come to think about it shows it's age more and more every time I play through it. Off the list I think the 3 S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games if put togeteher in one game would make the best fps ever.

Toss-up between Bioshock and Half-Life 2.

I would say Bioshock was a better game on merit of it's awesome writing, but Half Life 2 was the better shooter. Bioshock is good despite being a shooter, not because it is one.

Arg. Can't choose. Can I have an extra vote?

Modern Warfare games, both of them.

They were quite immersive, despite the fact that you have regenerating health. I had tons of fun while crawling past the tanks in ghillie suits with Cpt. MacMillan or running away from the favela gang as I latch onto the helicopter. It was moments like those that really made the game incredible.

True, Call Of Duty is overrated... but it's also underrated by the people saying it is overrated. Strong emotional reactions in people cause even stronger emotional counter reactions, as I have always said. Both games are incredible and fun, and even though they didn't bring anything revolutionary to the FPS genre, they were FUN. And entertainment is what gaming is all about.

Pathways Into Darkness. One of the only games to ever give me nightmares, though I was 7 or 8 when I first played it, to be fair.

I don't like to consider Deus Ex an FPS. Evaluated purely as an FPS, Deus Ex would be really really boring. I'm not a huge fan of Deus Ex, but if you consider it a hybrid, it fares better.

Completely split betwen Unreal Tournament 2004 (for the multiplayer side of things) and Far Cry 2 (on the SP side).

Wasted a lot of my younger life on UT just playing against bots mostly. Bombing Run + Inhuman + Alcohol + No Time Limit would see me through the night.

Far Cry 2 is the game I've put most time into on SP, having played it through fully twice and almost fully through another time. I love almost everything it does and lament constantly on Ubisofts stupidity on not making it easy to mod.

Bioshock, absolutely. Though in terms of what I would consider a comparatively unadorned, vanilla FPS, I'd also say Rainbow 6: Vegas 2 is still pretty damn entertaining.

Half-Life 2, since I don't count Deus Ex as an FPS.

Crysis would get a vote near the top as well - heavily underrated for the most part.

The term "Best Ever" is used too often and will lose its credibility due to it being a subjective topic. There isn't an absolute best. You should use a phrase such as "In your opinion" or "Your Favorite" due to the individuality of the subject and opinion.
Or he could just assume that we're all inteligent enough to work that out for ourselves, and that of course this isn't an objective topic.

Which we are, and which he did.
I agree with Crysis. Amazing game.
