I am posing this question to all you hidden Escapist rap fans.

I would like to say that Marshall Mathers LP is the best ever...but that would be ignorant, just because its my fave doesn't make it the best. So what, in your opinion, the best Rap album ever?

Note that I could onlt really put 7 on and leave some space for the others selection

My Name Is is one of the funniest things I've ever heard: Marshall Mathers isn't a rapper, he's a comedic artist ... or ... he was anyway

I'm not too big into rap, I'm more of a metal-head. But I do think Slick Rick and Run DMC are pretty cool.

Mobb Deep - "Hell On Earth". No contest. That album is to rap what Slayer's "Reign In Blood" is to metal - constant brooding, nasty atmosphere that never lets up and never gives you a break or a breathing space. Track after track of total madness - no wimpy R&B concessions like on their previous stuff, and no lame, soft beats like on their stuff afterward. Pity they never recorded anything even remotely decent after that album.

Honourable mentions would go to Public Enemy's "Nation Of Millions", Wu-Tang's "36 Chambers" and Nas' "Illmatic". I'd say that in terms of the influence and development of western music "Nation Of Millions" was the most important record in any musical genre to be released between 1978 and 1990, but I still like "Hell On Earth" better as a cohesive musical statement.

I deny voting for this as there is no "I hate rap and think it has gone down hill since the 70's"
