I don't know if Batman counts as a stealth game as there's plenty of straight up fighting as well.Great game though

Am I really the only one who voted for Tenchu? ^^' I just love Tenchu (4!), I could play it straight for days. And yes, I do have very long patience, my friends usually give up after a while but I was still doing some mission after an hour+ (as I kept failing...)

I might have picked it but I bought return from the darkness a few days ago and haven't had chance to play it because I don't have my xbox at hand.

ok other than the rigged poll,

THIEF the whole franchise is the ONLY francise to pull stealth play correctly.
Thief, sound, shadow, and stealing. Stasifing
plus the expert level forces you to play without killing

I love the Splinter Cell series. Skulking around in the shadows, choking out terrorists and using gadgets to propel myself around the map. Pulling out your gun to mow down enemies with bullets always felt like a last resort and was infinitely unrewarding.

Also, I got a thrill when I managed to get the drop on a character who could be interrogated.

That said, I really must play Thief.

Metal Gear Solid coz i remember when you had save your bullets and be "piss on your pants" stealthy. Metal Gear Solid 4 fell down in the shower and forgot it and tried to be a shooter :p

Definitely MGS for me, not counting 4. Batman has too many gimmicks for it to be pure stealth for me (Gargoyle hopping notably. Considering it always works when they aren't trapped) And I haven't gotten around to playing Splinter Cell or Thief.
It doesn't always work. If you jump from where an enemy can see you to a gargoyle where he can see you, he'll still shoot. It's not a mechanic that makes enemies stop attacking the second you grapple onto a gargoyle.
Okay, always may be a bit of an overstatement. But I was referring more to once you're up in the gargoyles, hop around a few times and you lose them. There were just a few too many conveniently placed hiding spots out of enemy reach. As opposed to looking for a safe spot where enemies can still get to you, but you either have a better vantage point to know of it, or it is a vantage point to take out said enemy before they can let others know you've been spotted(again).

Wrath of Heaven was excellent, but I'm going to go with either Splinter Cell: Double Agent (original Xbox version) or Hitman: Blood Money.

Stealth shouldn't be a black and white "do it or don't and die" thing. Not unless one can make it feel organic. With that in mind, Blood Money features a nice combination of traditional stealth, gunplay and disguise-based stealth. On higher difficulties you die fast enough that stealth is still very strongly encouraged, but at least I don't have to be RIGHT BEHIND the enemy in order to kill them.

Thief: Deadly Shadows is another good one.

MGS all the way. Throwing empty magazines. Laying out porn. Being able to go through the entire game without killing anyone. And honestly the cardboard box is the best hiding device EVER!

That and Snake is more badass then any other stealth game protagonist because he smokes.
