but please, no prequels! :p
I wonder why you hate prequels. But especially with BioShock it would work very well. There is a wealth of history on Rapture that's totally untouched by both games. We haven't even seen the city in full glory! It would be a shame to let that all that brilliant material go to waste.

Plus, the multiplayer didn't really cover the civil war, obviously. No story or anything, you're not seeing Rapture going down.
Sure, the MP tells the story, or at least part of it (audio logs). So does B1.

I don't like prequels because they're warmed leftovers. Because I already know how they're going to end. Your protagonist in a B3 prequel would either be fighting a battle where victory is already assured, or for a lost cause.

A B3 prequel would be the "safe road" for 2K, the scene a familar and popular place, Rapture. I'd prefer they got a little adventurous, take a little risk (but not TOO much of a risk, no changing the basic game mechanics, no, no) and tried to forge forwards. Take Eleanor's story and run with it.

I'm not sure how I would react to a new Bioshock. Depends on how they treat it. In my opinion the second one suffered due to pacing issues. It felt like you were always under threat, which I felt made me less likely to stop and take in the environment.
In Bioshock 1 once you cleared out an area you were pretty safe, so you could take some time to explore the nooks and crannies, but in BS 2 it felt as if you had to keep moving all the time, it was more action horror than suspense-driven horror. Which was a shame.

And would it kill the developers to take some time to balance out the difficulty? it felt like I was driving an indestructible tank around rapture in both games.

Yes, but not before a System Shock 3 get done!
I would love to see a System Shock 3

Moving back onto topic:
I can't see why people don't like the idea of a prequill. I think it's a fantastic idea.

Both Bioshocks have a nicely inverted difficulty curse. The first few levels where the hardest, especially on the higher difficulty settings. After you get a few stronger weapons? Piece of cake.

Yes, most definitely. But only when it's a prequel. I really really really want to see Rapture in all it's art deco glory and slowly see it crumble because of Atlas' gang and the following civil war.

A new BioShock game should revolve around those 2 things; the rise of Atlas and the civil war. I also propose a couple of gameplay changes:
- Give us back the free-roaming we had in BioShock 1, only now with an actual reason to go back to the previous areas.
- That reason would be a more open system. As you now work for Atlas' guerilla gang, you do missions for them. As Atlas rises, Rapture slowly degenerates, areas change and new missions unlock in every area.
- This also means that Rapture would be more alive than ever. Regular folks walking around, going around their daily business; the city would be truly alive. Of course, as the game progresses, things get worse; more and more people splice up, random splicer attacks, robberies, all that sort of thing.
- Missions should be doable any way you like; stealthy, explosions, just lots of guns, etc, but that choice should be made purely on personal preference.
- No more Little Sisters as morality choice, missions should have some.
- No more Little Sister farming for Adam. I'm cool with Adam, afterall you still need to splice up, (and thus you see not only Rapture go to hell, but yourself as well) but let it be a reward from those missions.
- Give us back the tinkering system from the first game, but now add some Fallout 3-ish plans for new tools and weapons. Give us more reasons to use certain weapons for certain situations.
- Your character should be a disgruntled worker-class guy (or girl I don't care) who came to Rapture with high hopes, only to have them shattered. He sees new hope in Atlas and joins up with his gang. Lots of characters we know from audiotapes could be woven in, think the police commissionaire, Diane McClintock (or something like that, Ryan's former mistress), all those people affiliated with Atlas. At one point you'll find out who Atlas really is and what his plans are and the choices you made in the game would decide if you would share the fate of McClintock or escape. Of course you won't be able to stop him outright, retcon's are meeh.

That's pretty much it in broad lines.
So, what your getting at is sort of a GTA-esque sort of Bioshock? I like it.

Considering they lost their lead developer, the man that also made System Shock 2 and countless other great games, I think they did a pretty good job on BS2.

But, what I like to see is a good BS game made for once since I have sentimental interest in this IP, many will say the first game was that, I don't think it really counts considering how much of a SS2 rip off it turned out to be....=/

Here's the best review I've seen on the first Bioshock and why for all that was great about it, it really just sucked.

I found the first Bioshock was a wonderful environment with a moderately entertaining story and incredibly bland gameplay. The second game tried to ride on the coat tails of the first in a lot of ways, and fell flat because of it. I really don't see a need for a third game, though I'm sure one will be made.

No. No. Just no. I think Bioshock is done now. If they make another then i'm afraid the story will be worse then in the second one, Bioshock 2's story isn't worthy enought to be the first stories shoe polisher. I don't want to see the series get worse as it goes on thats all.
At least they tried to take the story in a different direction instead of completely ripping it off from SS2.

Didn't do too well, but better attempt than the first.
