Well I guess it depends on your taste really. Borderlands has that grindcore addiction style of gameplay with not a whole lot else in terms of story...

And Fallout 3 is a freeroam adventure RPG with a much bigger world and a lot more to do in terms of Role Playing.

My moneys on Fallout 3.

PC version of Fallout will last you about 30 times as long as the console version would.
If this is true, then you definitely should get Fallout 3. Because I spent hundreds of hours on the console version. Borderlands is really fun though. So choose whichever one you want.

Fallout 3: Single-player RPG-goodness.

Borderlands: Co-op FPS-goodness, with just a hint of RPG.
Wow, how'd you do that?! A single playthrough doesn't take too long, so you, like played the whole game + dlc 3 times? Well... I guess I did too, but I kept expanding it with mods and extra quests and so on.
I have not even touched the downloadable content.

... Do not ask...

Huh? Then... what did you do those... hundreds of hours?
Even if I read hundreds as hundred, I don't see how you did that.

They're both rather different, so I didn't vote.
But I'd have to say that Fallout 3 is a better game. Only due to the fact that Borderlands is an incredibly lonely game if you don't have someone to play with you.
Mainly because you hardly know anything about your character, and also because you don't really have relationships with NPCs.
It's a game suited to a WOW player, as my friend said recently.

I see that you asked anyway. Well played, my good sir, well played.

I mostly walked around the barren wastes of D.C.

... I don't know how it happened.

So... what you're saying is that a WoW player is fine with being lonely? Or am I missing something?
I'm a WoW player(with monthly intervals, anyways) and let me tell you, in WoW it's seriously lonely when no-one from your friends list or guild are online. Not fun at all.

Not necessarily. But my friend was one of those guys who stayed up till 2 in the morning just grinding.
I also tried to play WoW last year, I got up to about level 20, and I found that it was very lonely.
But that may just be me.

Yes, somehow "do not ask" really invites people to ask, doesn't it?
Anyways, I'm seriously impressed at you ability to save money, just think about it. Playing a game for hundreds of hours, instead of one runthrough of 30h and then putting it in the "wherever you store your games". All the money it saves... If we all did that there'd be no more hunger in the world. (note: this was an exaggeration, or however you spell it)

Time for something OT: Since you're playing on the PC, I don't recommend Borderlands, a few days ago there was a news thingy here on the escapist about there not being any dedicated servers, gamespy sucking, and other things that don't work in it's online multiplayer. I think it's the most in fun split-screen anyway, even though my mate kept ninja-ing all of the epics...

Hmm.. yes, I guess I am the kind of person you see standing in a big city all day chatting away about random stuff. So it might not just be you, but me.

EDIT: oh noez, double post, my bad.

Fallout:

Inferior shooting mechanics
Far superior story, and total immersion
Very deep mythology and alternate universe
Very funny
Endless replayablity and a massive world with tonnes to explore

Borderlands:

Superior shooting mechanics
Nice art style, very fluid gameplay
Shitty, non existent story
Co-op is fun
Quite funny

They're boht grear.

But they're very different.

My choice?

Fallout 3

I spent almost 250 hours on console Fallout 3.

Sometimes it wasn't doing missions, Fallout 3 isn't supposed to be played like that.

Sometimes it's nice to just exist in its world. To take it all in, to soak up the beautiful, lonely, haunting atmosphere.

Seriously, I'll even stand on a ruined flyover at sunset for a whole minute just... looking.

Now I want to play F3 again...

Yes, exactly! Not to mention all of the stuff you find from just walking around. I did one "playthrough" without going to Megaton, and I found myself going to the Outcasts; running missions for them. On all of my other "playthroughs", I had been at war with them...

i really dislike this comparison, you should make a poll comparing chalk to cheese

if in terms of buying one or the other, the fallout 3 goty edition, you get more game for your money

in terms of fun borderlands with 4 friends playing cant really be beaten, especially when they have an expansion announced already

just get both?

if you are stuck on decision with regards to how similar the two games are... borderlands anf fallout are different in some pretty major ways allow me to highlight a few

Fallout:
questline is not strictly linear and does not feel as such
good storyline
nice atmosphere

bad points: (when compared to borderlands)

No multiplayer

i'm pretty sure people could add to that but meh

borderlands:
alot of variation on weapons
multiplay capabilities

badpoints:

Linear questline
No story immersion
Disjointed story all together
have to forward ports to play online (pc)

so i guess fallout is your best bet

Fallout 3 is Oblivion with guns. Not a real successor to previous Fallout games.

Borderlands is like Diablo with guns. Addictive, loot based cooperative fun.

Yeah, I do agree with you two.
So... I think we've done enough advertising for fallout now, haven't we? i'm sure he'll buy that :p

I never liked fallout. I can appreciate the nice haunted wastelands, but all immersion is really lost to me. For some reason Bethesda doesn't understand how to optimize. I like Borderlands graphics more, and i can run it on full settings with a 8600 GT and a triple core 2.1 GHz processor. In fallout at the lowest settings i still get a bit of lag and if i don't play it windowed, it freezes and crashes randomly. When it's windowed its really hard to immerse i even tried to put a pitch black desktop but it doesn't help.

Ah yes... Fort Independance. There's some pretty awesome loot in there.

There is no other game that rewards exploration the way F3 does. It's kind of mindblowing, the amount of stuff there is to stumble upon.
