ive personally got nothing against breastfeeding in public whatsoever... considering my sister a few months ago had her own baby.. she has discovered she absolutely loves breastfeeding and its a really close bond with her son so yea ... it adds that extra layer of closeness imo.

I really couldn't care less.
You can do it in public if you want, I won't complain. I just won't stand up in righteous rage either.

I understand why it would be fine, and why it's becoming less of a stigma these days, but at the same time, I think I'd be uncomfortable around someone doing it.
But I guess if the area I was in allowed it, it'd be up to me to leave, I can't complain in that situation.

As long as she brings enough for the whole class I don't see the problem.

I'm sorry I couldn't resist...Now that I got that out. My real answer is: I don't have a problem with it. If the woman wants to feed her child from her breast that's her choice. I don't think a few people feeling 'offended' should even be an issue. People can and will be offended at the smallest things. Hell I pissed off a guy once cause my hands were still kinda wet when I came out a bathroom.

I don't see what the problem is. If the kid's hungry, feed it. Personally, I hate it more when a baby is wailing high-pitched and non-stop. If the nipple shuts them up, all the better. Proven to be healthier for them anyway.

I mean, guys grab their junk in public all the time (You know, to make sure it's there. Or, to a lesser extent, scratch an itch). No one has a problem with this. But when the orbs of absolution come out to a needy baby (even when you don't see anything), it's taboo. What? Freaking nature, get over it.

It's much healthier for the baby and promotes bonding between the mother and baby. There is a big movement in the NHS at the moment to get mothers to breast feed because quite frankly its so much better for both the baby and the mother.

I guess guys need to think about what is best for the children rather than there own personal embarrassment.

Taken from the NHS website:

Breast milk is the only natural food designed for your baby.
Breastfeeding protects your baby from infections and diseases.
Breast milk provides health benefits for your baby.
Breastfeeding provides health benefits for mum.

Baby has:

less chance of diarrhoea and vomiting and having to go to hospital as a result
fewer chest and ear infections and having to go to hospital as a result
less chance of being constipated
less likelihood of becoming obese and therefore developing type 2 diabetes and other illnesses later in life
less chance of developing eczema

Breastfeeding is good for mums as it:

lowers your risk of getting breast and ovarian cancer
naturally uses up to 500 calories a day
saves money on infant formula, the sterilising equipment and feeding equipment can be costly
can help to build a strong bond between you and your baby

All those benefits you would deny the child and the mother because you get a little blushy when you see a boob? -.- Good show.

Technically you are saying you would rather increase the risk that a woman gets cancer than you could possibly see a naked boob in public.
That is an excellent list. But I do not recognize 'NHS', can you link me too their site Please.

My opinion is sorta...mixed. It's like, yeah a woman shouldn't have to go in the bathroom or whatnot to feed her kid, but she should at least cover herself with a blanket or something so people don't have to stare at boob while they're waiting for their milkshake at the McDonalds.

Should all these aspects be disregarded because some people feel "awkward"?
No. The problem with quoting one line of what I said and apparently not reading the rest of it is that you miss the point. I am pro breast feeding and said so.

All I pointed out was that it was false to say the only option to breast feeding is formula. For most women who breastfeed, that's simply wrong.

I also said most women who breast feed in public do so in an appropriately modest way so that it isn't an issue anyway most of the time.
I was replying to the "but then you can bottle breast milk too you know".

I am so tired of people assuming than pumping is an easy option, or even an option at all for everybody. This is not directed at you specifically, I just happened to push the quote-button on your post. It could just as easily have been any of the other posts about pumping being equal to feeding from the breast.

Define private?

Private at Just home? Not necessarily.

Private in public that's out of the way and/or blocked from sight politely? Sure.

Breast feeding in public makes me feel uncomfortable, so women who do it are bad.

I don't have any kids that I breast feed in public, so I don't see why anyone else should be allowed to.

Just bring a bottle?
That would be the bottle you spent 30 minutes pumping that morning.
The one that needs heating before the baby can have it.
The one that will go off if it's not used today.

So, breastfeeding mothers should be pumping in the morning every day they think they might be out in public with the baby, right?
Just so some prudes don't get offended?

What should they do if they think they might be out of the house long enough that the baby may need 2 feeds? Pump for twice as long?
I don't know, teach the baby to use a straw or something then. I know fuck all about breast feeding, never claimed that I did. All I'm doing is coming up with suggestions. if they donlt work then politely explain why. breast emissions aren't really my forte.
Thanks. I'm sure what the world needs is more people who "know fuck all about" X chiming in with instructions on how to deal with various aspects of X.

Have you considered sending unsolicited suggestions to ITER as to how to solve technical problems?

The NHS is the National Health Service in Britain. It's a free health service we pay for through our taxes. So when you go to hospital you get the treatment you need no matter how expensive it is.

I think women should be allowed to breast feed in public, but that doesn't mean it doesn't weird me out. Still, there are plenty of things that weird me out. It's my problem, not theirs.

Still, if the last time this topic was discussed is any indication, I'll be hiding in my bomb shelter with protective armor and a shotgun for the next week or so.

At least in the US we are weird about breasts. Somehow showing a woman's nipple is like opening the Arch of the Covenant at the end of Raiders. If we could just get over the initial "OH MY GOD, A NIPPLE OR BOOB!!!!" we could all start realizing that boobs are just boobs. While you can view them in a sexual context you can also view them in a non-sexual context. It is all situational.
I think it,s more HOLLY SHIT WOMEN HAVE NIPPLES!!!!! nobody seems to have a problem with boobs but more female nipples. as for breast feeding sure go nuts it,s how nature has it intended.

I say go for it, but with some small addendums.

I would prefer it if a woman didn't just yank her breast out in the middle of the fancy restaurant and let junior start sucking away. I have seen women breastfeed so discreetly you wouldn't even know the baby wasn't just hugging her real close. Partly pulled down top, slightly turned away from the large crowd of people enjoying their meal, just getting on with it and then returning to normal. Then I have seen women who yank their shirt almost all the way off, push back from the table for no apparent reason and bounce around staring at people as if daring them to complain. Please be the former, not the latter.

Secondly: Know when it's creepy. This is more of a general complaint than just in public. YOu have a little eight month old who needs dinner? No problem. You have a four year old who is still suckling? That's creepy, please don't.

It's only acceptable if the mother is attractive.
If it's your typical 50lbs overweight American mother... then, no. Keep that @#$% wrapped up so we don't have to see it.
