Squirtle

Why? Well, in the Manga (Yes, I'm that lame) Green's Blastoise could fly.

He put his cannons to the ground and blasted himself up.

How does that not grant you respect?

I'm a Bulbasaur fan. I mean all 3 will carry you through the game, but good old Bulb will do it with better moves.

Charmander. Because Charizard.

It's the only true dragon in the entire poketemans series. The ONLY true dragon.

A dinosaur with gigantic laser flower? Hello, I'm a dragon.

A turtle with high powered water cannons? Hello, I'm a fricken DRAGON.

On a more serious bent, Charizard has the best speed, attack, and special. Which means from yellow version on he can take care of everything with fire or flying. No one can beat him if they can't catch him.

And Charmander is the cuddliest cutest ball of power out there.

Charmander. Once you get Flamethrower, nothing that doesn't have defense against you can stand in your way. Plus, fire types are ballsing rare. You can catch yourself a Lapras or a Magikarp (for Gyarados, of course) anywhere.

It depends actually, in the original game, it was squirtle, due to the fact not only was he useful throughout the game, but he could destroy the other 2 with the right move set.

But with leaf green, charmander can learn metal claw, which makes him more useful against the first gym, but beyond that theres no real change.

So squirtle wins overall, but i have a history os using the water starters, so i could be biased.

I'm going to say Piplup because there are more than 3 starter pokemon.

Also, he can learn Peck, which can hold off grass types.

Oh, Fine I'd pick squirtle.

Always go with fire!
Charmander.

Especially because it let's me say "I'm a Charmilion-aire, ************!" between levels 16 to 36.

Blastoise is statistically superior to Venusaur and Charizard. And is just a powerhouse defensively and with special attacks. And it's the only one that can learn attacks that are critical against the other 2. Water against Charizard and Ice against Venusaur. So yea, logically he wins. But for just cool factor, Charizard's one of my favs.

If I'm playing seriously and not just for giggles, I take Squirtle. Why?

That's why.
Yeah, Blastoise is pretty badass but he can't compete with this.

Bulbasaur definitely, only because it made the first three gyms painfully easy.

Screw getting a Charmander, and having to catch a Catapie, and level it up to a Butterfree in order to have a fighting chance to beat Brock and his Onyx. Damn Metapods and your hardens...
It's all about the mankey ;)

That all depends on your values, but as others have stated, Squirtle is technically superior.

All are obviously formidable Pokemon, though.

2.catch a Pikachu in Virdian forest
3.level it
4. umad Rival and Misty?
That is a very good reason to pick Charmander. He is one of the best Fire Pokemon out there, taking care of your need for a Fire Pokemon in the team. And you can quickly get a Pikachu, the mascot and yet still my favourite Pokemon and I don't care how mainstream it is, to offset the water weakness.

Charmander is also a great Pokemon for beginner players who do not like to strategize. As he can tear through opponents quickly. Charmander is a perfect pick for the impatient. And isn't a bad choice for other players, either. Personally, I still tend to choose Charmander most of the time, just because I tend to want to go for other Pokemon for water and grass types. My other two favourite fire Pokemon being Ninetails and Rapidash.

Squirtle is the logical choice for the opening Pokemon. Doesn't initially get beaten by Bulbasaur even though he has elemental advantage. Destroys Brock at the Boulder Gym. A Pikachu can be picked up in Viridian Forest which beats Misty. Any elemental disadvantage can be dealt with by catching new Pokemon after that.
