I call my Mother by her first name and she gets quite upset when i do it. [even thou she gets my name wrong on a daily basis]. Strangely thou she won't get upset if my brother calls her by her first name.
Is your brother older, financially endowed and got a list of academic titles the length of your arm? If yes, then that's probably why... (no disrespect)
OT: No... I just call them 'Dad' and 'Mom' like any good middle class New England kid... though I occasionally call my old man 'Pops'. It also depends on the language I'm speaking, though even then, I rarely refer to my parents by name when speaking Chinese.
With us (by 'us', I mean Chinese, Japanese and Koreans, not sure about the southerners) it is a cultural thing that if you're close enough to someone, you can address them in a familial manner. Friends who aren't related at all will be addressed as 'brother/sister/aunt/uncle', so addressing a close family member by name without signifiers is actually quite cold and rude.
